Intersection, interrelation or interdependence?:The relationship between circular economy and nexus approach
Circular Economy (CE) and nexus thinking are increasingly considered as promising solutions for resource sustainability. While CE aims to design out waste through reducing, reusing, recycling and recovery of materials, the Nexus approach is interested to minimise waste and inefficiencies by focusing on the interlinkages between resources. Both concepts have been evolving separately with limited academic work to analyse their relationship. The aim of this systematic review, based on academic publications from 2004 to 2020, is to scrutinise the relationship between the circular economy and the nexus approach by adopting a mixed methods research design including bibliometric analysis and thematic synthesis. Our quantitative bibliometric analysis shows that, out of 7956 circular economy and 5795 nexus papers, academic documents explicitly mentioning both concepts account for less than 1% of each literature. Nonetheless, there is considerable overlap in most frequent words (50%–71%) as well as the most relevant sources (54%–56%) between both literatures. A detailed qualitative analysis of the documents relevant to both concepts also supports the existence of a close relationship between the two. From these analyses, we develop a new integrative conceptualization of the relationship between circular economy and the nexus approach. We conclude that there is good evidence for a three-tiered hierarchical relationship: ‘intersection’, ‘interrelation’ and ‘interdependence’, which we discuss in detail. Finally, emphasising the importance of an integrated approach, we propose a novel conceptual framework which combines circular economy and nexus approaches, which helps to operationalise nexus thinking on the one hand, and to converge the circular economy towards environmental sustainability on the other hand. As such, the framework addresses two known challenges of the concepts. However, whilst our integrated framework contributes to the conceptual development of both circular economy and the nexus approach, further research is required to highlight and facilitate their interrelation and interdependence in practice

Summary paper on alternative fertilisers
Fertilisation in organic agriculture is today highly dependent on the import of external nutrients and organic matter by fertilisers derived from conventional farming and conventional food industries. Within Deliverable (D) 5.1 of the project Organic-PLUS the current use of peat in growing media, plastic for mulching and fertiliser inputs in organic agriculture was already addressed, followed by a report discussing possible alternatives to these contentious inputs (D5.2). The current D5.6 develops the topic further and shows in more detail the results of research on the use of alternative non-contentious fertilisers conducted in Task 5.4, ‘Alternatives to contentious sources of fertility’, of Work package 5 SOIL in Organic-PLUS. The objectives of Task 5.4 were a) to characterise relevant alternatives for contentious inputs for physio-chemical and other characteristics (e.g. availability), and study how well they function compared with existing contentious inputs (manure from conventional farming, commercial fertilisers from conventional sources) and b) to develop system approaches to integrate the alternatives in existing organic cropping systems/ sequences. The characteristics of the individual fertilisers as well as short recommendations for their application in practice are presented in D5.7 (a technical report) along an overview of nutrient concentrations and other essential characteristics of the fertilisers tested

This report was produced under the task of peat replacement (5.5) in Organic-PLUS, to report on the work carried out to make contact and interact with important stakeholders along the value chain for growing media and peat. This report considers the viewpoints of growing media manufacturers and plant nurseries, in addition to organic growers. The report comprises a section on initial dissemination of project activities, to awake stakeholders' interest, then a section with information from stakeholders about current practices (use of substrates, fertilisers for pot production etc). The last section includes stakeholders' views concerning the degree of acceptance of replacement inputs
Balancing people, planet, and profit in urban food waste management
Food waste is a complex problem and critical challenge for the sustainable development of circular economies, with interconnected social, environmental, and economic impacts. Supporting the identification of strategies that best minimise these impacts on people, planet and profit, this paper explores the dynamic impacts of food waste management options on the triple bottom lines of sustainable development in urban circular economies. We present a system dynamics model of the urban agri-food supply chain. This model simulates the fluxes of food and food waste throughout the supply chain, as well as their impacts on economy (i.e., costs and benefits for each sector and the broader economy), society (i.e., food insecurity) and environment (i.e., water, energy, and carbon footprints). Using Bristol city in the United Kingdom as a case-study, we evaluate the impacts of seven food waste management options (i.e., reduction, redistribution, animal feed, anaerobic digestion, composting, incineration, and landfilling). The results show that food waste reduction in consumer sectors (i.e., households and hospitality and food services) and redistribution in supply sectors (i.e., primary production and manufacture) offer the greatest benefits for the environment, society, and economy. For the retail sector, both reduction and redistribution options are highly favourable. Although these options can potentially have some adverse economic effects on the supply side due to a reduction in demand, their considerably high benefits make them high-reward, low-risk options. We thus conclude that food waste reduction and redistribution are the only options with a clear triple-win for people, planet and profit. This paper makes a significant contribution by introducing a robust quantitative model and a novel triple bottom line framework for sustainable food waste management in urban circular economies
Report on trials with alternative growing media (replacement of contentious input peat).
This report describes studies and experiments conducted to replace peat in growing media for certified organic growers. Peat in growing media is one contentious input which has been extensively studied in Organic-PLUS, under the lead of Rafaela Caceres (IRTA) who coordinated Task 5.5, “Examination of promising alternatives, peat”. While some of the studies referred to here have already been described in other publications, some studies are primarily described in the present report. Hence, the level of detail described here varies between the studies. The studies were conducted in countries with greatly different climatic conditions. They range from raising of olive saplings (cuttings) in Turkey (MFAL), various crops in Catalonia (IRTA, EAM), production of extruded fibre from many different plant materials in Germany (ATB), tests to reduce the need for vermiculite in growing media from composted woodchips in UK (CU) and composted horse manure with leaves from hardwood trees for vegetable transplants in Norway (NORSØK).
