No full textAssistenzsysteme unterstützen Menschen bei Arbeitsprozessen und bei der Zusammenarbeit mit technischen Systemen. Im Zuge der fortschreitenden Digitalisierung und Automatisierung verschiebt sich die Arbeitsteilung zusehends in stärker automatisierte Bereiche. Da auf absehbare Zeit jedoch nicht von einer kompletten Autonomisierung von Arbeitstätigkeiten ausgegangen werden kann, stellen Assistenzsysteme einen zentralen Bereich der Arbeitsgestaltung in Mensch-Maschine-Zusammenhängen dar. Der Beitrag erläutert nach einer Einordnung der geschichtlichen Entwicklung von Assistenzsystemen mögliche Strukturierungen digitaler und physischer Assistenzsysteme. Nach einer Diskussion der durch Arbeitsteilung und Autonomie entstehenden Herausforderungen werden Lösungen für Anwendungsbereiche in der industriellen Wertschöpfung vorgestellt und ausgewählte technische Grundlagen erläutert. Sebastian structured this specific episode on Alexis Castellanos’ Isla to Island, a wordless graphic novel grounded by her personal family history and the history of Operación Pedro Pan (Operation Peter Pan). By analyzing such a historic event through the medium of fiction, Sebastian argued that this is one of the most unique Knights HistoryCast episodes of all time. Einfluss des haptischen Feedbacks in virtuellen Montageszenarien
No full textDigitale Zwillinge und Simulationsmodelle für Montageprozesse, welche mit den Konzepten von Industrie 4.0 und 5.0 einhergehen, ermöglichen eine virtuelle Montageplanung und Inbetriebnahme sowie virtuelles Montagetraining. Eine Grundvoraussetzung ist hierbei eine hohe Realitätsnähe der Modelle und Interaktionen, um das Vertrauen in die Ergebnisse zu stärken und den Lernerfolg des virtuellen Montagetrainings zu erhöhen. Zur Steigerung des Präsenzempfindens in virtuellen Umgebungen bietet sich ein zusätzliches haptisches Feedback an. Es fehlen jedoch systematische Vergleiche verschiedener Feedbackarten sowie eine Untersuchung der Abhängigkeit in Bezug auf das Anwendungsszenario. Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit werden daher drei Grundhypothesen aufgestellt sowie entsprechende Untersuchungsmethoden entwickelt und durchgeführt.
Im Rahmen der ersten Hypothese steht der Einfluss eines statischen physischen Gegenstandes zur Beschränkung der Bewegungsfreiheit in einem virtuellen Montageszenario im Fokus. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass das statische passive Feedback zu keiner Veränderung im Präsenzempfinden der Teilnehmenden führt. Mit der zweiten Hypothese wird der Einfluss von mobilen Werkzeugnachbildungen auf das Präsenzempfinden untersucht. Der Einfluss unterschiedlicher Attribute wie Gewicht, Form und Funktionalität auf das Präsenzempfinden wird in vier Untersuchungsdurchläufen untersucht. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass insbesondere die realistische Griffform einen großen Einfluss auf das Realitätsurteil ausübt und in Kombination der Eigenschaften in noch größeren Effekten resultiert. Mit der dritten Hypothese wird untersucht, inwieweit das Anwendungsszenario einen Einfluss auf den Effekt von haptischem Feedback auf das Präsenzempfinden ausübt. Die Ergebnisse zeigen kleine und mittlere Effekte in einigen Faktoren der Präsenz. Diese deuten eine Bevorzugung der Interaktion per Handgesten an und weisen im Vergleich zu dem einfachen Montageszenario eine geringere Effektstärke auf. Die Effektstärke ist daher abhängig von dem gewählten Anwendungsszenario. Interaktionseffekte, durch mögliche Störeinflüsse oder der VR-Vorerfahrung, zeigen sich nicht.01/202
"Cronica der Turckey" Sebastian Franck's Translation of the "Tractatus de Moribus, Condicionibus et Nequitia Turcorum" by Georgius de Hungaria
Full text linkThe Tractatus de moribus, condicionibus et nequitia Turcorum is one of the most important first-hand accounts of life in fifteenth-century Turkey known to modern scholarship. It is the work of a Christian former slave of the Turks, writing after his return to the West. Although the author does not name himself, he can be identified as a
Dominican priest, Georgius de Hungaria, who died in Rome in 1502. His Tractatus is conceived as a work of anti-Islamic polemic, yet it contains a surprisingly unbiased appraisal of Turkish customs.
First printed c.1480 when European apprehension in the face of Ottoman expansion was at its height, the Tractatus was reprinted in numerous editions, and was widely used as a
source by other authors. Luther edited the text in 1530, using the positive account of Turkish customs and religious observance as a weapon in his polemic against the Roman
Catholic Church: if heathens could perform such exemplary works, who could fail to doubt the efficacy of works as a means of salvation?
Sebastian Franck in his German translation of the Tractatus went further: replacing Georgius' commentary with his own, he used the text to attack institutional religion as a
whole and to promote his concept of a non-dogmatic, spiritual Church of individuals united with each other only through their union with God -a Church which was not closed to Moslems or members of any other creed. This translation or adaptation, the Cronica der Türckey, marks Franck's decisive break with the Lutheran cause and the beginning of his lonely path as a 'spiritual individualist'. Franck reworked his translation of the Tractatus for his major geographical work, the Weltbuch of 1534.
This thesis concerns itself primarily with Franck's Cronica, providing the first modern critical edition of this text, in a near-diplomatic transcription with an extensive glossary. The thesis also includes transcriptions of the Tractatus; of Türckei, an anonymous translation of the Tractatus, and of relevant additional material from Franck's Weltbuch. None of these texts has been published in full in a modern edition.
In the Introduction Franck's Cronica is compared in detail with the Tractatus, highlighting the changes that occur in translation; the character and the significance of these changes are then discussed. It is established that Franck, whilst being unwilling to reverse any of Georgius' value judgements on Islam and Turkish culture, is highly selective in his choice of material for translation, and frequently gives the text new nuances and adds his own
comment. The question of the Tractatus' influence on Franck's further development as a writer and thinker is also raised.
The investigation then turns to Franck's use of the Tractatus material in his Weltbuch. His eclecticism becomes apparent in this text, in which Georgius' account is juxtaposed - but not synthesised - with material from other sources, often of lesser veracity and greater anti-Islamic bias. Franck's distortion of the Tractatus material to suit his own line of argument is clearly discernible: from the unique phenomenon presented in the Tractatus the Turks
become one more example of the general human tendency to externalise and dogmatise faith.
In addition, the transmission of Cronica and Türckei is examined, and the relationship between these two translations is clarified: Franck certainly used Türckei in writing his Cronica, but is unlikely to be the author of the anonymous work
Development of an evaluation methodology for packaging and containers in the context of ecological and economic criteria for decision support of packaging alternatives in production and logistics
Full text linkZiel dieser Arbeit ist es herauszufinden, wie ein Bewertungsverfahren für Verpackungen und Gebinde aussieht, bei dem ökologische und ökonomische Gesichtspunkte berücksichtigt werden, um die Entscheidung zwischen Verpackungsalternativen für Transportverpackung zu erleichtern. Die Subfragen, die dazu zu beantworten sind, lauten: 1.Welche sind die relevanten Wirkungskategorien eines Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), die man bei der Verpackungsbewertung berücksichtigen muss? 2.Welche Einflussfaktoren sind beim Life Cycle Costing (LCC) von Verpackungen zu berücksichtigen? 3.Wie können Ergebnisse des LCA und LCC in ein Bewertungsergebnis einfließen? Wie werden diese zwei Komponenten gewichtet? Subfrage 1 wird mit einer systematischen Literaturrecherche beantwortet. Dazu werden LCAs aus dem Bereich Transportverpackungen seit 2018 bezüglich der verwendeten Wirkungsindikatoren untersucht. Subfrage 2 und 3 werden mit anderer Literatur beantwortet. Bei LCAs sind Global Warming Potential (GWP), Eutrophication Potential (EP) und Acidification Potential (AP) zu berücksichtigen, bei LCCs eignen sich Lebenszykluskosten. Auf Basis dieser Erkenntnisse wird eine an die ISO 14040 und 14044 angelehnte Bewertungsmethodik inklusive Normierung und Gewichtung erstellt und mittels Use Case im Excel validiert. Eine Entscheidungsunterstützung für die praktische Anwendung ist dabei gegeben, jedoch stellt die eingeschränkte Datenverfügbarkeit ein wesentliches Problem dar. Eine Aggregierung auf einen Single Score wird nicht vorgenommen. Zur möglichen Weiterentwicklung wird die Umsetzung als Softwarelösung angedacht. Als zukünftiges Forschungsfeld wird im Ausblick Multi Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) in Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (LCSA) als vielversprechend identifiziert.The goal of this work is to find out what an evaluation procedure for packaging and containers looks like, in which ecological and economic aspects are taken into account, in order to facilitate the decision-making between packaging alternatives for transport packaging. The sub-questions to be answered are: 1. What are the relevant impact categories of a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to consider when evaluating packaging? 2. Which influencing factors have to be considered in the Life Cycle Costing (LCC) of packaging? 3. How can LCA and LCC results be incorporated into an assessment result? For this purpose, LCAs from the transport packaging sector since 2018 are examined with regard to the impact indicators used. Subquestion 2 and 3 are answered with other literature. Based on these findings, an assessment methodology based on ISO 14040 and 14044, including normalization and weighting, is created and validated with a use case in Excel. Andrew shares several letters from his impressive collection, allowing us to be as close as possible to the Veterans—engaging with their own words, thoughts, and emotions. Indeed, themes central to UCF VLP are often exemplified in the 210,000 war letters Andrew has preserved for over twenty-five years.
Andrew Carroll is an award-winning historian and author and is the founder and director of the Center for American War Letters at Chapman University. Andrew was the second keynote speaker invited to share his extraordinary work during the 2024 UCF VLP Institute.

An Augmented Reality Interface for Safer Human-Robot Interaction in Manufacturing
Full text linkWith the adaptation of Industry 4.0 and emerging ideas of Industry 5.0, the manufacturing industry is shifting back towards human-centered production. In these scenarios, collaboration robots (Cobots) become an important part of this shift toward human-robot collaboration (HRC). However, with the introduction of robots meant to work in close proximity to and in collaboration with people, problems of safety and collaboration efficiency arise. On the other hand, there are developments in the field of Augmented Reality (AR), which allow overlaying digital information onto the physical environment and having people interact with it. This paper introduces an AR interface for HRC with cobots, which can tackle the issues of human safety and efficiency. The use of the interface is demonstrated on an HRC ski assembly use case. Wang Tao’s Diary: excerpts Translated by Sebastian Eicher
No full textIn a little regarded episode from Wang Tao’s diaries, the author tells us about a two-week long journey from Shanghai to Hangzhou and to the West Lake. Wang Tao undertook this journey together with the missionary Griffith John, who at that time was trying to find ways to preach the gospel outside the treaty port of Shanghai. We know the rough outline of this journey from Griffith John’s writings, as it was the second half of a longer journey along the Grand Canal. But Wang Tao’s presence and his notes on it have so far been neglected. This is a loss, as the diary Wang Tao kept offers not only a personal and lively account of the journey, it also gives us some insight in the Chinese perception of the missionaries’ activities and a description of the Hangzhou era before the Taiping would ravage it only a bit more than a year later
