    What is the level of fruit infestation by pulp-feeding insects?: An overview of their meaning and measurement

    Despite the economic, ecological, and evolutionary importance of the fruit infestation level by pulp-feeding insects, its meaning and measurement are confusing yet. We show the first overview of the fruit infestation level, which emphasizes the problems to define its biological meaning and estimation ways. Employing a literature search concerning the fruit infestation level, we identify different concepts, estimations, and assumptions. This exercise reveals that commonly the interpretation of the infestation level is confusing. We highlight that the data use of the infestation level may drag interpretation problems that depend on (1) the study objectives, (2) the developmental insect stage, and (3) the sampling management. Also, jargon problems arise concerning the research field and the complexity level of the study. Lastly, we explain how to calculate and report the fruit infestation level taking into account the sampling design and measurement scales. Using fruit flies as a model, we show the main topics and guidelines for better study design of the infestation level, either in agricultural, ecological, and evolutionary contexts.Fil: Benavídez, Analía.     Native and Introduced Host Plants of Anastrepha fraterculus and Ceratitis capitata (Diptera: Tephritidae) in Northwestern Argentina

    Wild or commercially grown, native and exotic fruit were collected in 30 localities in the Tucumán province (NW Argentina) from January 1990 to December 1995 to determine their status as hosts of Anastrepha fraterculus (Wiedemann) and/or Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), the only two fruit fly species of economic and quarantine importance in Argentina. A total of 84,094 fruit (3,466.1 kg) representing 33 species (7 native and 26 exotic) in 15 plant families were sampled. We determined the following 17 host plant associations: Annona cherimola Miller (Annonaceae), Citrus paradisi Macfadyn (Rutaceae), Diospyros kaki L. (Ebenaceae), Eugenia uniflora L., Psidium guajava L., Myrcianthes pungens (Berg) Legrand (Myrtaceae), Ficus carica L. (Moraceae), Juglans australis Grisebach (Juglandaceae), Mangifera indica L. (Anacardiaceae), Eriobotrya japonica (Thunb.) Lindl., Prunus armeniaca L., P. domestica L., and P. persica (L.) Batsch (Rosaceae) were infested by both A. fraterculus and C. capitata. Citrus aurantium L., Citrus reticulata Blanco, Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck (Rutaceae), and Passiflora caerulea L. (Passifloraceae) were only infested by Ceratitis capitata. Out of a total of 99,627 adults that emerged from pupae, 69,180 (≈69.5%) were Anastrepha fraterculus, 30,138 (≈30.2%) were C. capitata, and 309 (≈0.3%) were an unidentified Anastrepha species. Anastrepha fraterculus predominated in native plant species while C. capitata did so in introduced species. Infestation rates (number of larvae/kg of fruit) varied sharply from year to year and between host plant species (overall there was a significant negative correlation between fruit size and infestation level).     Tephritidae flies associated with Chuquiraga avellanedae (Asteraceae) in Patagonia, Argentina

    In Patagonia, knowledge about the interaction among tephritids and the native flora is very scarce. In this study we identified for the first time two tephritid species (Cecidochares sp. and Neosphaeniscus m-nigrum) associated with the capitula of Chuquiraga avellanedae. This is the first record of a host plant for the genus Neosphaeniscus. Cecidochares sp. was more abundant and had a shorter development time than N. m-nigrum. Also, two families of parasitoid wasps (Pteromalidae and Eurytomidae) were registered.     First report of Juglans australis (Juglandaceae) as a natural host plant for Anastrepha schultzi (Diptera: Tephritidae) with notes on probable parasitism by Doryctobracon areolatus, D. brasiliensis, Opius bellus (Braconidae) and Aganaspis pelleranoi (Figitidae)

    We document for the first time that J. australis is a natural host plant of Anastrepha schultzi Blanchard, a species belonging to the fraterculus group. We also confirm earlier reports indicating that A. schultzi infests P. guajava. Fruit were collected in the locality of Horco Molle, province of Tucumán in NW Argentina, in a perturbed “Yungas” forest (Montane Cloud Forest). Infestation rates were 318.5 and 492.6 larvae per kg of fruit in J. australis and P. guajava, respectively. We also report that A. schultzi and A. fraterculus are attacked by the larval-pupal hymenopterous parasitoids Aganaspis pelleranoi (Figitidae), Doryctobracon areolatus, D. brasiliensis and Opius bellus (all Braconidae) in the study region.Fil: Schliserman, Pablo.     In the laboratory, the effect of host fruit species Citrus paradisi, C. aurantium, Prunus persica, and Psidium guajava on A. fraterculus parasitism by Diachasmimorpha longicaudata was studied. The number of ovipositor-probing events and the probing-time were documented to evaluate the role of fruit chemistry, and epicarp and mesocarp thickness, respectively. The relationship between the parasitization rate and fruit size in particular plant species was analyzed by applying a simple regression. Results showed that guava and peach yielded significantly more parasitoids than both Citrus spp. Probably, the parasitization rate of D. longicaudata on A. fraterculus would be influenced in part by chemical and physical factors from fruit species.Fil: Ovruski Alderete, Sergio Marcelo.     The establishment of Aceratoneuromyia indica (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) in three biogeographical regions of Argentina

    Specimens of the eulophid Aceratoneuromyia indica (Silvestri) were recovered from fruit fly pupae collected in three Argentinian biogeographical regions. A total of 11 A. indica specimens was obtained from pupae of the tephritid Anastrepha fraterculus (Wiedemann) in Las Yungas and Paranaense subtropical rain forest regions, and 10 A. indica specimens were recovered from pupae of the tephritid Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) in Chacoan subtropical dry forest region.Thus, A. indica was recovered approximately 38 years after its first release in Argentina.Fil: Ovruski Alderete, Sergio Marcelo.     Habitat degradation and introduction of exotic plants favor persistence of invasive species and population growth of native polyphagous fruit fly pests in a Northwestern Argentinean mosaic

    Expansion of agricultural land is one of the most significant human alterations to the global environment because it entails not only native habitat loss but also introduction of exotic species. These alterations affect habitat structure and arthropod dynamics, such as those among host plants, tephritid fruit flies, and their natural enemies. We compared abundance and dynamics of pest and non-pest tephritids and their natural enemies over a mosaic of habitats differing in structure, diversity and disturbance history on the Sierra de San Javier in Tucuman, Argentina. Our prediction was that conserved habitats would be more resistant to the establishment and spread of invasive tephritid species due in part to a greater abundance of natural enemies, a greater diversity of native species in the same family and trophic level, and a greater wealth of biotic interactions. We further predicted that native species with broad host ranges should be more sensitive to habitat loss yet more competitive in less disturbed habitats than generalist native and exotic species. We found that environmental degradation, and introduction and spread of exotic host plants strongly affected distribution patterns, abundance, and phenology of native and exotic tephritids. Monophagous tephritid species and several specialized parasitoids were more sensitive to habitat loss than polyphagous species and parasitoids exhibiting a wide host range. In contrast, native monophagous species and native parasitoids appeared to exclude the invasive Mediterranean fruit fly from conserved patches of native vegetation. Nevertheless, the Mediterranean fruit fly persisted in uncontested exotic host plants and thrived in highly degradeted urban landscapes.Fil: Schliserman, Pablo.
