Generalized plane-wave expansion of cylindrical functions in lossy media convergent in the whole complex plane
Electromagnetic scattering by buried objects may involve a plane-wave expansion of the related fields, which depends on the objects' geometry. Furthermore, involved media in realistic cases are lossy, which requires the analytic continuation of formulae known for the lossless cases, due to the complex nature of the wave vectors. This problem has been covered in a previous paper, but the expression found still does not converge in some areas of space. In this paper, a new, convergent, expression of the spectrum of cylindrical functions in lossy media is analytically computed and its convergence limits are discussed. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Incidence of Severe Streptococcal-Related Diseases in Italian Children in an Era of High Group A Streptococcal Resistance to Macrolides
Macrolides are still widely prescribed for adult and pediatric respiratory infections in Italy despite the fact that it is known that the resistance of group A streptococci has dramatically increased since 1994, The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence of severe streptococcal-related diseases from 1990 to 1996 on the basis of data derived from computer-generated lists of children hospitalized in 35 Pediatric Departments. The clinical record of each case was reviewed in order to gather data concerning clinical diagnoses, laboratory investigations and antibiotic therapies in the preceding four weeks, Six hundred and twenty of the total of 321,612 hospitalized children had severe streptococcal diseases; the overall annual rate remained stable at 2.13/1000 admissions in 1990 to 1.7/1000 admissions in 1996, Severe diseases were preceded by a microbiologically confirmed acute streptococcal infection treated with antibiotics in only 392 of the 620 children (63.2%), Between 1993 and 1996 (with the exception of 1995), macrolides were more frequently prescribed than beta-lactam antibiotics for acute streptococcal infections that subsequently developed into severe disease. There was no difference in the rate of severe streptococcal complications between the patients adequately treated with antibiotics and those who were inadequately or not treated. Possible explanations for the relatively stable rate of severe streptococcal complications in Italian children could be (1) a relative absence of invasive, rheumatogenic or nephritogenic strains and/or (2) a difference between in vitro and in vivo resistance of group A streptococci to macrolides. Further studies are needed to investigate the biological characteristics of resistant group A streptococcal strains and their relationships to short- and long-term clinical outcomes
NETS FOR PEACH PROTECTED CULTIVATION
The aim of this paper was to investigate the radiometric properties of coloured nets used to protect a peach cultivation. The modifications of the solar spectral distribution, mainly in the R and FR wavelength band, influence plant photomorphogenesis by means of the phytochrome and cryptochrome. The phytochrome response is characterized in terms of radiation rate in the red wavelengths (R, 600-700 nm) to that in the farred radiation (FR, 700-800 nm), i.e. the R/FR ratio. The effects of the blue radiation (B, 400-500 nm) is investigated by the ratio between the blue radiation and the far-red radiation, i.e. the B/FR ratio. A BLUE net, a RED net, a YELLOW net, a PEARL net, a GREY net and a NEUTRAL net were tested in Bari (Italy), latitude 41° 05’ N. Peach trees were located in pots inside the greenhouses and in open field. The growth of the trees cultivated in open field was lower in comparison to the growth of the trees grown under the nets. The RED, PEARL, YELLOW and GREY nets increased the growth of the trees more than the other nets. The nets positively influenced the fruit characteristics, such as fruit weight and flesh firmness

Improved implementation of the Alicki–Van Ryn nonclassicality test for a single particle using Si detectors
Recently a test of nonclassicality for a single qubit was proposed [R. Alicki and N. Van Ryn, J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 41, 062001 (2008)]. We present an optimized experimental realization of this test leading to a 46 standard deviation violation of classicality. This factor of 5 improvement over our previous result was achieved by moving from the infrared to the visible where we can take advantage of higher efficiency and lower noise photon detectors
Vulvar Lichen Sclerosus from Pathophysiology to Therapeutic Approaches: Evidence and Prospects
Vulvar lichen sclerosus (VLS) is a chronic, distressing, inflammatory disease with an enormous impact on quality of life. Treatment goals are relieving symptoms, reversing signs and preventing anatomical changes. Despite the availability of numerous therapeutic options, treatment outcome may not be entirely satisfactory and a definitive cure does not exist. This may be due to the fact that the exact VLS etiopathogenesis remains unknown. The objectives of this paper were to review the most up-to-date knowledge on VLS etiopathogenesis and to consider the available therapies through the lens of a plausible pathogenetic model. An electronic search on both VLS etiopathogenesis and its treatment was performed using the National Library of Medicine PubMed database. Based on current knowledge, it is conceivable that various, heterogeneous environmental factors acting on a genetic background trigger an autoimmune, Th-1 response, which leads to a chronic inflammatory state. This, in turn, can determine both tissue and micro-vascular injury and activation of signaling pathways involved in fibroblast and collagen metabolism. This pathogenetic sequence may explain the effectiveness of anti-inflammatory treatments, mostly topical corticosteroids, in improving VLS clinical-pathological changes. Further deepening of the disease pathways will presumably allow key mediators to become new therapeutic targets and optimize the available treatments
