From External to Internal System Decompositions
The recently obtained approach to the construction of state maps, which is directly based on the linear differential operator describing the system, is shown to lead to an immediate and insightful relation between external and internal decompositions and symmetries of a linear system. This is applied to the decomposition of a system into its controllable and uncontrollable part (in the state space representation commonly referred to as the Kalman decomposition), and to the correspondence between external and internal symmetries
State maps from bilinear differential forms
State equations need often to be constructed from a higher-order model of a system, resulting for example from the interconnection of subsystems, or from system identification procedures. In order to compute state equations it is crucial to choose a state variable. One way of doing this is through the computation of a state map. In this paper we develop an alternative approach to the algebraic characterization of state maps, based on the calculus of bilinear differential forms. From this approach stem a new algorithm for the computation of state maps, and some new results regarding symmetries of linear dynamical systems
Conservation laws and open systems on higher-dimensional networks
We discuss a framework for defining physical open systems on higher-dimensional complexes. We start with the formalization of the dynamics of open electrical circuits and the Kirchhoff behavior of the underlying open graph or 1-complex. It is discussed how the graph can be closed to an ordinary graph, and how this defines a Dirac structure on the extended graph. Then it is shown how this formalism can be extended to arbitrary k-complexes, which is illustrated by a discrete formulation of heat transfer on a two-dimensional spatial domain.
Gradient Realization of Nonlinear Control Systems
We investigate necessary and su?cient conditions under which a nonlinear afine control system with outputs can be written as a gradient control system corresponding to some pseudo-Riemannian metric defined on the state space. The results rely on a suitable notion of compatibility of the system with respect to a given afine connection, and on the input-output behavior of the prolonged system and the gradient extension. The symmetric product associated with an afine connection plays a key role in the discussio

Circuits and SystemsElectrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc
A receding-horizon approach to the nonlinear H∞ control problem
The receding-horizon (RH) methodology is extended to the design of a robust controller of H∞ type for nonlinear systems. Using the nonlinear analogue of the Fake H∞ algebraic Riccati equation, we derive an inverse optimality result for the RH schemes for which increasing the horizon causes a decrease of the optimal cost function. This inverse optimality result shows that the input-output map of the closed-loop system obtained with the RH control law has a bounded L2-gain. Robustness properties of the nonlinear H∞ control law in face of dynamic input uncertainty are considered.
Lagrangian and Hamiltonian Methods for Non Linear Control
New technologies have created engineering problems where successful controller designs must account for nonlinear effects, and existing theories for general nonlinear systems often prove to be insufficient. Moreover, most of the existing nonlinear control design methods do not take into account the physical properties of the system and tend to compensate for any nonlinear effect; thus creating unnecessary control actions and potential fragility. Furthermore, it has been recognized that nonlinearities are not necessarily a drawback and may even be beneficial. Starting from these observations new approaches to nonlinear control that exploit the structure and the properties of mechanical and electromechanical systems, in particular the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian structures, have been discussed in the literature in recent years by a growing number of international experts. This also takes into account the important roles played by Hamiltonian and Lagrangian methods in various scientific disciplines ranging such as classical mechanics, quantum mechanics, fluid dynamics, electrodynamics, irreversible thermodynamics, mass and heat transport systems, celestial mechanics, optimal control theory, and dynamical systems theory.
Following these considerations, the goals of the fourth IFAC Workshop on Lagrangian and Hamiltonian Methods for Nonlinear Control are to highlight new modeling and control problems, to bring together control experts from different areas, and to present state-of-the-art results on the analysis and control of complex dynamical engineering systems: in brief, the important role of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian structures as design methods will be investigated
Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc
