FiFoSiM - an integrated tax benefit microsimulation and CGE model for Germany
No full textThis paper describes FiFoSiM, the integrated tax benefit microsimulation and computable general equilibrium (CGE) model of the Center of Public Economics at the University of Cologne. FiFoSiM consists of three main parts. The first part is a static tax benefit microsimulation module. The second part adds a behavioural component to the model; an econometrically estimated labour supply model. The third module is a CGE model which allows the user of FiFoSiM to assess the global economic effects of policy measures. Two specific features distinguish FiFoSiM from other tax benefit models: First, the simultaneous use of two databases for the tax benefit module and second, the linkage of the tax benefit model to a CGE model.FiFoSiM; microsimulation; CGE

Cancer genomes tolerate deleterious coding mutations through somatic copy number amplifications of wild-type regions
No full textAbstract Cancers evolve under the accumulation of thousands of somatic mutations and chromosomal aberrations. While most coding mutations are deleterious, almost all protein-coding genes lack detectable signals of negative selection. This raises the question of how tumors tolerate such large amounts of deleterious mutations. Using 8,690 tumor samples from The Cancer Genome Atlas, we demonstrate that copy number amplifications frequently cover haploinsufficient genes in mutation-prone regions. This could increase tolerance towards the deleterious impact of mutations by creating safe copies of wild-type regions and, hence, protecting the genes therein. Our findings demonstrate that these potential buffering events are highly influenced by gene functions, essentiality, and mutation impact and that they occur early during tumor evolution. We show how cancer type-specific mutation landscapes drive copy number alteration patterns across cancer types. Ultimately, our work paves the way for the detection of novel cancer vulnerabilities by revealing genes that fall within amplifications likely selected during evolution to mitigate the effect of mutations

No full textThe aim of the M.A. thesis The Seeking according to G. H. is to introduce the prose The Passion According to G. H. by Brazilian writer Clarice Lispector (1920-1977) and examine this literary work in relation to biblical motives which appear in the novel. First, the author presents Lispectorʼs life and work and mentions her contribution to the Brazilian literary canon. Then he thoroughly analyses and interprets the prose The Passion According to G. H. In the next section, he focuses on selected Biblical motives and shows semantic shifts in the work. The thesis is subsequently concluded by a brief reflection on the function of Biblical themes. {0,...,k} is an L(2,1)-labelling of G of span k if any two adjacent vertices are mapped onto integers that are at least 2
apart, and every two vertices with a common neighbour are mapped onto distinct integers. It is known that for any fixed k>=4, deciding
the existence of such a labelling is an NP-complete problem while it is polynomial for k=8, it remains NP-complete when restricted to planar graphs. In this paper, we show that it remains NP-complete for any k>=4 by reduction from Planar Cubic Two-Colourable Perfect Matching. Schaefer stated without proof that Planar Cubic Two-Colourable Perfect Matching is NP-complete.

No full textThe result of my extensive research project is the first comprehensive study on the life and work of H. G. Adler, an important member of the circle around Elias and Veza Canetti, Erich Fried etc., whose ground-breaking scholarly work long overshadowed his reputation as a creative writer. Adler, a German-Jewish writer, born in Prague in 1910, was the inmate of various National Socialist concentration camps (Theresienstadt, Auschwitz) during the Second World War and lived in exile in London from 1947 until his death in 1988.
Both as a scholar and as a creative writer, this prolific author is one of the most interesting and most versatile personalities in postwar history. In addition to publishing seminal works on the Holocaust, he left behind an important and to a large extent unpublished body of work, consisting of narrative prose, poetry and drama as well as scholarly articles and books on history, sociology, politics, psychology, language and literature, music, arts, philosophy, theology and Jewish studies. The works of H. G. Adler address central contemporary concerns, cover a large number of areas of interest (European cultural and intellectual history, 20th century German literature, exile studies, Holocaust research etc.) and shall thus - so I hope - attract considerably more attention in the future.
This monograph attempts to close a major gap in exile studies that has often been complained about in the past. Its most important topical areas are: H. G. Adler's biography, Theresienstadt (Terezín), exile in England, the development and interdependence of scholarly work and literature, H. G. Adler's position amongst writers such as Karl Kraus, Franz Kafka, George Orwell, Elias Canetti and W. G. Sebald, H. G. Adler as Franz Baermann Steiner's literary executor, H. G. Adler's position amongst London émigrés, H. G. Adler and Austria (despite his exile in England, Adler throughout his life remained closely associated with Austrian culture).
This study focuses on Adler's most important and best known works "Theresienstadt 1941-1945" and "Die verheimlichte Wahrheit", books and articles like "Die Dichtung der Prager Schule" and "Der Kampf gegen die 'Endlösung der Judenfrage'", which have hitherto been neglected by academic research, the voluminous autobiographically structured or autobiographically influenced novels "Panorama", "Eine Reise" and "Die unsichtbare Wand" as well as numerous unpublished texts, documents and photographs from Adler's literary estate. It is rounded off by a complete bibliography of H. G. Adler's publication from 1947 to 1988.
