Ghislaine Stouder, Fabricius' diplomatie and philological disappointment. Rome's relationship with the peoples and cities of Italy between 285 and 280 B.C., in the light of a fragment of Cassius Dio, DHA 33/1, 2007, 47-70.
Abstract: Starting from a fragment by Cassius Dio (fg. 39.1), the author takes into account an embassy disregarded by the modern historians of Roman diplomacy, that of Fabricius which the successive editors have situated in 283 B.C. The notice is reappraised in the light of the conflicts involving Rome against the Gauls, the Etruscans and the Umbrians together with the preparation for war in South Italy, in Tarentum. Thus the reexamination of the transmission and historical context of the fragment makes it possible to establish a new chronology of the event - now dated 285/4 B.C. The study also reconsiders Cassius Dio's contribution to the story of that period and enables one to appreciate his unique testimony on the outbreak of the Tarentine war. Stouder Ghislaine. Biometrics – do we have a choice in who has this data and how they use it?
Biometrics – do we have a choice in who has this data and how they use it?
This week we dive deep into the world of biometrics, with a particular focus on facial recognition technology. What is the current state of facial recognition, and why are legal experts and privacy advocates so concerned? Additionally, we’ll explore the realm of health data; is there a necessary compromise between collecting our biometric information for improved health outcomes and safeguarding our privacy? Or can we find a way to achieve both? Joining us is Dr. Stephanie Hare, the author of Technology is Not Neutral: A Short Guide to Technology Ethics.
The programme is presented by Gareth Mitchell and the studio expert is Ghislaine Boddington.

Abstract 1298: Genetic variants related to longer telomere length are associated with increased risk of renal cell carcinoma
Abstract
Telomere length in peripheral blood leukocytes has been evaluated as a potential biomarker for renal cell carcinoma (RCC) risk in numerous observational studies, but association results have been inconsistent. These findings may have been affected by several limitations, including bias from reverse causation, reliance on a single blood specimen, residual confounding or measurement outside of the etiologically relevant time period. Germline genetic variations associated with leukocyte telomere length are not affected by an individual’s exposure to confounders and may act as unconfounded markers of the relationship between telomere length and RCC risk. We performed an analysis of genetic variants associated with leukocyte telomere length to assess the relationship between telomere length and RCC risk. Genotypes from nine telomere length associated variants were aggregated for 10,785 RCC cases and 21,579 cancer-free controls. We found that the number of telomere length variants associated with RCC risk (P-value<0.05) was significantly higher than what would be expected by chance (5/9 variants, binomial P-value=3.32×10−5). We aggregated the telomere length associated variants into a weighted genetic risk score (GRS), where one GRS unit equals to an inferred one Kb change in telomere length. Genetically inferred telomere length was associated with an increased risk of RCC (OR=2.07, 95% CI=1.70-2.52, P-value=7.14×10−13). This association was consistent across increasing deciles of telomere length GRS (Trend P-value=5.58×10−12). As a sensitivity analysis, we removed two telomere length variants in linkage disequilibrium with RCC genome-wide associated regions (rs10936599 and rs9420907) from the telomere length GRS, the association with RCC risk remained statistically significant (OR=1.73, 95% CI=1.35-2.20, P-value=1.07×10−5). When performing analyses by RCC subtype (clear cell=5,574 cases, papillary=573 cases and chromophobe=203 cases), all subtypes investigated showed positive GRS effect estimates, suggesting higher risk for longer telomeres, however, due to limited sample sizes the estimates were only significant for clear cell (OR=1.93, 95% CI=1.50-2.49, P-value=3.79×10−7) and papillary subtypes (OR=1.96, 95% CI=1.01-3.81, P-value=0.046). In conclusion, our results suggest a genetic background that favors longer telomeres is associated with increased RCC risk.

This article tries to show that in Aristophanes the paradoxical status of the gods - who are both revered and held up to ridicule - depends on their function in comedy. The author studies, as examples, the only three divinities that play a prominent part in Arisophanes : Zeus, Hermes and Dionysos. Represented with conventional traits, they are inserted in the ancient order that the hero rejects, but they also favour access to fiction thanks to their acts. As they simultaneously represent the ancient world and its calling into question, they therefore personify their own calling into question.
At the Spectacle with Aristophanes : Exchanged Looks and Metatheatre ̶ Through a precise study of the verbs ὁράω, βλέπω, θεάομαι, σκοπέω and σκέπτομαι, the author analyses how Aristophanes stages the gaze in his comedies. The action of seeing assumes a dynamic exchange between the subject and object in vision. This movement allows the character to build his identity. It also allows the development of a kind of community between characters and spectators. This conception of vision has a fundamental impact on the status of the spectator, the definition of the theatrical space and the distinction between fact and fiction.
