Title: The Effects of Type of Communication Issue and Initial Opinion Strength on Immediate and Delayed Opinion Change, Author: Gillian M. Foster, Location: ThodeAn experiment was conducted to determine the effect on opinion change of communications concerning different types of issues when given to subjects with different initial opinion strengths. Opinion change was evaluated immediately, and after an interval of time. The results indicated that opinion change was greatest for issues of low involvement, and least for issues of high involvement, irrespective of the subject's initial opinion strength. The induced opinion change for the issues of high involvement was found to be retained longer than that for the low involvement issues.ThesisMaster of Arts (MA

From the erotic blush to the petrifying Medusa gaze in George Eliot's novels

    No full text
Alban, Gillian M. E. (Dogus Author)Close reading of George Eliot's novels shows her characters betraying their emotions in a pattern of specular gazes. Certain of her female characters reveal their erotic feelings in a self-conscious blush, expressing the subject's embarrassment at the exposure of her passion. Such libidinal scenes, symbolized by blushing, signify a metonymously displaced orgasm. Eliot uses the blush as an expression of overwhelming passion, shown visually and kinesthetically as well as aurally (when accompanied by music), whether literally in the story or in her narrative commentary. In other, less successful, interactions between characters, the gaze is narcissistically reflected back to themselves either in mirrors or by others serving as mirrors. In such cases, the subject sees herself and her desire narcissistically expressed in others' eyes, indicating an obsession with her self-image leading to aggression and, ultimately, a death wish. Precisely at this third level, the objectifying look of the monstrous Medusa either petrifies her victim or is mirrored back onto the subject. (1) The trope of the gaze in human development is highlighted in Jacques Lacan's "The Mirror Stage as Formative of the I Function as Revealed in Psychoanalytic Experience," while Jean-Paul Sartre offers insight on the "look" from its most sublimely interactive to its most destructive, calling the latter the Medusa look (430). Sigmund Freud ("Medusa Head" 85) and Helene Cixous ("Laugh of the Medusa" 399) agree that the Medusa stare is both erotic and petrifying. This paper analyzes these highly-charged, ubiquitous interactions through four major novels by George Eliot

Striving to be an Excellent Healthcare Professional and Excellent Parent: Exploring the Experiences of UK Doctors and Nurses

    No full text
A broad issue in retention of healthcare professionals (HCPs) is that they experience difficulties in maintaining equilibrium between their professional and personal life, which disproportionately affects parents and intersects with gender, profession and career grade.1,2 Understanding the facilitators and challenges for this group is crucial to support and retain this future healthcare workforce. Thus, this study sought to explore the dual role of HCPs who are parents and how these experiences impact on career pathways and multiple facets of wellbeing. This study is underpinned by a social constructivist approach. It was a qualitative study using semi-structured interviews incorporating a narrative inquiry approach for data collection. The narrative inquiry approach captured 20 meaningful and purposeful stories from doctors and nurses about their experiences of their dual role as HCP-Parent between June 2021 and June 2022. All interviews were undertaken virtually and lasted between 44 and 75 min long.HCPs expressed that their workplace roles changed and or they changed speciality/career when they become parents. There was a negative organisational culture around working less than full time, and this impacted upon career advancement. Organisational changes were often not discussed with HCPs prior to implementation, which impacted HCPs' personal and professional life. HCP-Parents reported their dual roles often clashed, which had implications on their health and wellbeing. For some HCP-Parents, their dual role offered a new insight and perspective in their workplace role. HCP-Parents relied upon informal support from work colleagues and friends to help them navigate the challenges of their dual role.REFERENCES1. Lavergne, M. R., Gonzalez, A., Ahuja, M. Encephalitozoon pogonae–Associated Systemic Vasculitis in a Central Bearded Dragon (Pogona vitticeps)

    No full text
A 4-yr-old female central bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) with a history of tenesmus was found dead 1 month after surgical debulking of a palpable caudal coelomic mass. At necropsy, a 2.5-cm-diameter, firm, lobulated, tan–yellow mass was associated with the wall of the pelvic canal and bilateral masses were present in the caudal pharynx (0.6 and 3.0 cm in diameter), the largest of which was soft and dark red. Histologically, the mass within the pelvic canal arose from the coelomic wall and consisted primarily of fibrocollagen with myxoid to cystic regions, and mixed inflammatory infiltrates. Additional findings included granulomatous dermatitis, myositis/cellulitis, coelomitis, encephalitis, and pneumonia. Vasculitis was detected in multiple organs, and in the pharynx resulted in aneurysmal dilation and perivascular hemorrhage leading to masslike lesions. Within all lesions, scattered macrophages contained oval, weakly basophilic, Gram-positive, slightly refractile, 1–2 µm-diameter ovoid organisms consistent with microsporidia. A diagnosis of systemic microsporidiosis characterized by lymphohistiocytic and heterophilic vasculitis with medial hypertrophy and fibrinoid necrosis was made. Using DNA sequencing, the organism was identified as Encephalitozoon pogonae. Encephalitozoon pogonae should be considered a differential diagnosis for vasculitis and aneurysms in bearded dragons

The development and validation of a multidimensional measure of male body dissatisfaction and its preliminary use in exploring the relationship between body dissatisfaction and exercise

    No full text
Historically, research has focused predominately on female experience of body dissatisfaction (BD). More recently there has been an increased focus upon BD in men. The current literature review indicates that research in BD in men is its infancy compared to BD in females and the review highlights the differences between the experience of BD in men and women and the difficulties in applying evidence that has been found in female samples to males. In line with this, tools used to assess females may not be appropriate to assess males. It is therefore important to develop an instrument that accurately assesses BD in males to identify those who may be at risk. The literature review also pays attention to the coping strategies that men may engage in with a particular focus on exercise and its potential role as both a protective and risk factor. The purpose of the empirical paper was to explore the structure of a new measure: The Male Body Dissatisfaction Inventory (M-BoDI). A Principal Components Analysis revealed a four-component structure. The study provided evidence of concurrent validity for the M-BoDI and good internal reliability and the scores on the M-BoDI were stable over a 4-week period. A significant relationship was found between negative reasons for exercising and BD as measured by the M-BoDI, and negative reasons for exercising were also linked to core excessive exercise features. Implications of the current findings and ideas for further research are discussed
