Reikšminiai žodžiai: Budget; Darbas; Free time; Labour: Lithuania; Laiko biudžetas; Laisvalaikis; Popramoninė visuomenė; Postindustrial society; Pramoninė visuomenė; Darbas; Industrial society; Laisvalaikis; Leisure; Lithuania; Post-industrial society; Postindustrinė visuomenė, laiko biudžetas; Time budget; WorkThe concepts of work and leisure and values related to these areas of human life have been basically changing in modern Western society. The core of human life has been professional occupation in modern society, and leisure has been considered kind of “residual” activity; the transition to post-industrial phase of social development is shown by a gradually increasing prominence given to leisure as the time devoted to by itself valuable activity that creates independent systems of meanings. The paper investigates modern theoretical concepts of leisure and their adequacy to the practical Lithuanian realia. The first part of the paper considers what leisure is and what the relationship between leisure and work is. The second part discusses the historical evolution of the relationship of work and leisure; while the third part focuses on international longitudinal research of time budget. The fourth part discusses leisure trends in present-day Lithuania, based on the data of European value studies conducted in 1990, 1999 and 2005. The empirical data allows stating that essential and rather consistent changes in the assessment of the significance of work and leisure, typical of post-industrial societies, have been going on in Lithuanian society, primarily, the gradually increasing importance of leisure and decreasing significance of work in human life, seeking the balance of these two spheres. It is a consistent pattern that the most vivid differences in value attitudes are observed between generations as well as among people of different education and professional status

Reikšminiai žodžiai: Dainų ir šokių šventė; Kultūrinis identitetas; Kultūrinis tapatumas; Kultūros tyrimai; Cultural identity; Cultural research; Song and Dance CelebrationEven though the Song and Dance Celebration is one of the largest cultural events in Lithuania, the importance of which is recognized both at domestic and global level, one has to admit that scientists have paid far too little attention to its role in society. Therefore, shortly after the last song and dance celebration a pilot public opinion survey has been carried out aiming at the evaluatiion of the fiest's potential for the so- cio-cultural integration, as well exploring the prevailing concept of celebration, public envolvement in the events and their evaluation. These data allow us to evaluate the prospects of the continuity of the Lithuanian Song and Dance Celebration with respect to public attitudes, to understand viability of the festival and opinion of various demographic groups

Trust in networking: what do digital natives and digital immigrants think about it?

Reikšminiai žodžiai: Pasitikėjimas; Saviveiksmingumas; Skaitmeniniai imigrantai socialinė kognityvinė teorija; Skaitmeniniai čiabuviai; Tinklaveika; Digital immigrants; Digital natives; Digital social networks; Self-efficacy; Social cognitive theory; TrustThe development of digital communication technologies have rapidly expanded innovative, more convenient and inexpensive ways of interpersonal communication, creating completely new spaces of sociability, where the youngest human generation has settled fastest and feels most comfortable. Why are young people so enthusiastic about integrating new technologies in their daily lives, using them more intensively and in a wider variety of activities? One of the possible answers stemming from social cognitive theory paradigm is quite simple: young people just have greater digital self-efficacy because they see positive role models both in their social environment and in the media, and have less hesitation in their ability to master new competencies. In terms of peer-to-peer communication and global networking, this young generation has become so unique that it has even been figuratively called "digital natives", distinguishing it from the older generations who - as it is claimed - even after acquiring the necessary skills and competences can only become "digital immigrants". Although the term "digital natives" has become quite popular and widely used, this social phenomenon with far-reaching implications has sofar been little studied. When looking for an answer to a still open question whether age is the principal dividing line between digital natives and digital immigrants, or other attributes (such as education, material well-being, etc.) can compensate for the sharp differences in digital experiences, the article focuses primarily on the issue of trust in networking, because trust is a prerequisite for the successful functioning of any social entity. As of every social environment, mutual trust is also an important element of digital networking as it encourages communication: users need to assume a certain degree of risk and to trust others in order to expand their networks, hoping that the potential harms of networking will be less than its potential benefits. It is worth to discuss about the twofold relationship between trust and networking experience: on the one hand, greater trust in networking encourages greater involvement and fearlessness; on the other hand, networking experience gives useful insights into the processes and, at the same time, gives more confidence and builds trust. Since people of different generations have very different experiences of networking, it is likely to lead to differences in trust in networking. Official statistics how that the level of basic and higher digital competences among the youth is higher than among older generations; that young people are the most active on the Internet as the majority of them are involved in networking on daily basis; that among the youngest generation most of the indicators of digital literacy, activities, and privacy threats in the network are not dependent on education, where as in other generations education differentiates them significantly; that the greatest differences between generations are related to the spread of social and entertainment activities online, and the differences in the prevalence of instrumental activities among generations are not so pronounced. The article raises the question of whether these differences in networking practices also lead to different levels of trust in networking, which, in turn, would further strengthen the distinction between digital natives and digital immigrants. The analysis of the latest European Values Study data showed that, of all demographics examined, only age has a significant independent impact on trust in networking. Meanwhile, the impact of education and material well-being on trust in networking, controlling the age of respondents, has not been established. This implies that people aged 16-24 are rather homogeneous group in terms of Internet usage intensity, digital literacy, social networking, and trust in networking, so they can be considered as true digital natives. Although older people, especially those with a higher level of education and material background, acquire similar or even higher digital competences than young people, their normal networking behavior is in principle different in nature. The analysis carried out thus confirms the concept of digital natives as an age category. In order to reduce this intergenerational divide, if not to eliminate it, special attention should be paid to developing the digital self-efficacy of older people, fostering their faith in their ability to master digital technologies and to use them effectively in completing their daily tasks. Otherwise, the older generations will be destined to live in social exclusion and, as more and more services are moving to the digital space, this gap will only widen

Reikšminiai žodžiai: Vietos tapatybė; Sąsajos su reikšmingomis vietomis; Lokalumas; Globalumas; Eurointegracija; Place identity; Place attachment; Locality; Globality; EurointegrationWhat determines that we feel connected with certain places and attached to them, that we care for them and express warm feelings of belonging even when living far away from them for a long time? The answers to these questions inevitably lead to the fundamental issue of personal identity. The present article analyses one of the aspects of the place identity phenomenon, namely, the dynamics of the relationship of self-perception of Lithuanians with certain places. For this purpose, the latest data from the European Values Survey, completed at the end of 2017, and the data of previous waves of this survey are employed. They reveal that Lithuanians give priority to local areas (first of all, to their own city, to Lithuania, and somewhat less to their own region), meanwhile their identification with Europe and the whole world is not so strong. However, the empirical data confirm the theoretical assumption that local and global self-awareness cannot be opposed: the comparison of the strength of place identities in different socio-demographic groups and among respondents with different value orientations has shown that the boundaries of places important for a person’s self-awareness are intertwined in a very complex way

Work and leisure are interlinked and mutually determining spheres of human life, both of which are socially constructed concepts that depend on a variety of cultural, social and economic factors. In contemporary society, the balance between work and leisure is particularly relevant in the light of various social, economic and technological changes, such as the intensification of work, the constant accessibility of workers to smart communication devices, the blurring of the boundaries between professional and private time, the introduction of flexible forms of work organisation, etc. The pursuit of work-life balance is therefore even becoming a kind of cultural value imperative aimed at ensuring individual and societal well-being. Using empirical data from the European Values Survey spanning almost three decades (1990-2017), this paper analyses the dynamics of value orientations related to work and leisure in Lithuania, in order to see how the importance of these areas of life and the perception of their relationship to each other is changing in different groups of the population, and how this is related to the change of generations. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, factor analysis, nonparametric covariance analysis and multiple group comparison test and revealed significant differences in value attitudes related to work and leisure and their interrelationship in different social generations in Lithuania, suggesting that, while the importance of work itself has remained essentially unchanged, we are witnessing a profound cultural change, manifested as a broadening of the spectrum of expectations related to work and a search for a better work-life balance.Šiame straipsnyje tiriama su profesine veikla ir laisvalaikiu susijusių vertybinių orientacijų dinamika Lietuvoje, siekiant išsiaiškinti, kaip keičiasi šių gyvenimo sričių svarba ir skirtingų gyventojų grupių jų santykio suvokimas, ir kaip tai susiję su gyventojų kartų kaita. Tam pasitelkiami beveik tris dešimtmečius apimantys Europos vertybių tyrimo duomenys, kurių analizė atskleidžia reikšmingus su darbu ir laisvalaikiu bei jų santykiu susijusius vertybinių nuostatų skirtumus skirtingose Lietuvos socialinėse kartose: pats darbo svarbos vertinimas esmingai nekinta, tačiau matomas giluminis kultūrinis pokytis, kurį rodo su profesine veikla siejamų lūkesčių spektro išsiplėtimas bei skirtingų gyvenimo sričių suderinimo siekis

Changing Perceived Life Control: Intergenerational Insights from Lithuania

A substantial body of research underscores that greater perceived control over one’s life not only enhances the individual quality of life but also, at an aggregate level, fosters economic efficiency, social inclusion, and civic participation. Perceived control also plays a crucial role in enhancing resilience during crises. At the individual level, it helps to develop more effective coping mechanisms and mitigate psychological distress, engage in more proactive problem-solving strategies and maintain better health outcomes. At the societal level, it strengthens community cohesion that enhances mutual support, collaborative problem-solving and more coordinated crisis responses. Thus, effective strategies to maintain or increase perceived control can significantly buffer against the adverse effects of crises. However, social preconditions for the formation of perceived control and its broader societal implications remain insufficiently explored. This study examines the dynamics of perceived control in Lithuanian society through the lens of generational replacement, by utilizing the data from the European Values Survey which has been conducted in the country for almost three decades. The findings reveal notable differences in this attitude across social generations. Yet, a multilevel Age-Period-Cohort (APC) analysis indicates that, while generational shifts contribute to an overall societal increase in perceived control, the primary driver is a profound cultural transformation that cuts across all generations

Reikšminiai žodžiai: Darbo vertybės; work valuesThe subject matter of this article is the job quality of Lithuanians, their conception of work, work values dominating the society, as well as their social determinants. When speaking of work here, we have in mind f i r s t of all paid employment, that is, professional work that requires some specific qualifications and constitutes a basis for individual subsistence as well as for social prestige. In the contemporary societies, work is a value in itself since for the majority of people work is the desired way of living and the ultimate goal. Lithuanians treat work as one of the most important domains of human life, similarly as populations of the majority of Western European societies: importance of work here exceeds the importance of leisure time, communication with friends, etc., family being the only domain that excels work in importance. Even though work provides with different kinds of experience and constitutes the source of different kinds of valuable things, for Lithuanians, work is important first of all as a source of income as well as of other rewards, and this tendency has even strengthened during the decade of Lithuanian independence. It is interesting to note that this tendency is contrary to the one observed in Western European societies (for instance, Denmark, the Netherlands, or Sweden) during the last decades where relative importance of good pay is decreasing, meanwhile the possibility for the development of personality and self-expression gains importance

Reikšminiai žodžiai: Facebook; Masinė komunikacija; Privatumas; Tarpasmeninė komunikacija; Viešumas; Viešumas, privatumas, tarpasmeninė komunikacija, masinė komunikacija,; Virtualūs socialiniai tinklai; Virtualūs socialiniai tinklai, Facebook; Facebook; Mass communication; Networks; Networks, Facebook; Personal communication; Privacy; Publicity; Publicity, privacy, personal communication, mass communication, virtual social; Virtual socialThe modern technologies of instant communication lead to the increasing convergence of public and private communication styles and discourses which allows researchers to talk about the cultural shift from formality towards familiarity in all spheres of communication. It is certainly caused by continuously increasing pace of communication and subsequent diminishing of the formality of public communication since communication participants simply have no time to elaborate their thoughts, language structure or grammar (especially in synchronous text-based communication). Not less important are other aspects of this process. On one hand, communication becomes detached from its contexts as mobile communication devices determine that private conversations can and do take place in public spaces. On the other hand, they enable personal interaction in unprecedentedly huge groups, which also blurs the line between public and private communication. One can confidently say that we live in the society undergoing substantial cultural changes in which computer technology has become part of everyday life, but there is still lack of standards, norms and rules of how to use them. In other words, the culture of interpersonal communication in the new platforms still is at its embryonic stage. This article raises questions what is interpersonal communication, when it is accomplished through the digital mass media? How does it affect the self-awareness and self-presentation of communication participants? And are the users of modern communication technology sufficiently aware of the communication features when compared to the traditional interpersonal communication? It seems that the dissemination of personal data is the new value in modern society, as people on social networks come together exactly to share their information with the widest range of people. One can argue if it is good or bad; the consequences (advantages and disadvantages, norms and values) of nowadays fashionable communication in social networks will become explicit only after a few decades when the generation of it's most ardent followers, current teenagers, will mature and live through their lives. However, it can already be stated that this is not just another alternative means of human communication, as it is quite often believed without deeper thought about the motives that lead people to spread the details of their life for tens, hundreds or even thousands of "friends" with whom they have no possibility maintain consistent communication in real life. Virtual social networks are a fundamentally new type of communication platform, where mass and interpersonal communication become intricately intertwined. On the one hand, communication becomes disconnected from the context: the mobility of the new means of communications determines that private conversations can and do take place in public spaces. On the other hand, they enable personal interactions among the members of groups of previously unimaginable size, which blurs the line between public and private communication. This is not the first technological breakthrough in the history of mankind, and thus humanity will find ways to adapt to it in a way that it would meet their daily needs and minimize risks. Only then one will be in a position to judge what comes as a priority: the possibility to present oneself to other people in a desirable way through consequential performance of one's identity on social networks or willingness to protect one's privacy and personal data against possible misuse. Imagination and creativity are emerging as human qualities that are seen as essential to finding new solutions to the challenges of the contemporary world. Recognizing that creativity is not only an individual, but also a communal trait, there is an increasing focus on creating a cultural and social environment that is conducive to creativity, where playfulness and imagination are valued, where freedom of expression is encouraged, and where openness to diversity and a tolerance for risk-taking and failure prevail. One of the fundamental elements of such an environment is the common societal perception that imagination is an important part of human activity. Using the data of the European Values Study, this article analyzes the attitude of Lithuanian society towards the importance of fostering of imagination, its socio-demographic differences and the dynamics of this attitude in 1990–2017.Vaizduotė ir kūrybiškumas tampa tomis žmogiškosiomis savybėmis, kurios imamos suvokti kaip esminės, ieškant naujų sprendimų, kaip atsiliepti į šiuolaikinio pasaulio keliamus iššūkius.
