No full textThis collection contains programs and newsclipping reviews of various theatrical performances appearing in Little Rock between 1914-1962. Programs include plays, minstrel shows, movies, vaudeville shows, operas, musicals, recitals, concerts, follies, revues, local amateur shows, lectures, ballets, magic shows, readings, etc. These shows were performed by both local groups and traveling troupes. Theatres include the Kempner, Little Rock High School, and Robinson Auditorium. The newsclipping reviews are from the Arkansas Gazette, Arkansas Democrat, and the Memphis Commercial Appeal (traveling troupe usually played in Memphis before coming to Little Rock). Also included are two notebooks by Saunders: 1) List of performances at the Kempner and Robinson Auditorium, 1917-1958, and (2) personal reviews of performances, 1926-1933. Born in Stuttgart, Arkansas October 20, 1892, Earl Saunders, Sr. was raised in Little Rock. Saunders married Margarite Dicks and they had one son, Earl Saunders, Jr. After working for Becks, a retail store, Saunders joined the S. M. Brooks Advertising firm. He became vice-president and stayed with the company 44 years until his death May 2, 1962. One of his responsibilities at S. M. Brooks Advertising was to prepare the programs for the theatrical performances appearing in Little Rock. Saunders served as President of the Young Business men's Association, Director of the 10th District Federation of America Advertising, and Director of the Salvation Army Board. His life-long infatuation with the circus and theatre is best characterized by his habit of watching the circus trains unload at 3:00 in the morning and his booking of four seats on the second row of every show which came to Little Rock. Diffraction modelling of mobile radio wave propagation in built-up areas
No full textThis thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.This thesis examines theoretical methods of modelling radio wave propagation in built-up areas, with particular application to mobile radio systems Theoretical approaches allow precise quantitative description of the environment in terms of parameters such as mean building heights and densities, in contrast to the ambiguous nature of more conventional empirical models. The models are constructed using both scalar and vector field analysis techniques. The vector analysis is accomplished using the Geometrical Theory of Diffraction to describe the detailed effects of building shape and positioning, particularly for short-range situations. Over longer ranges propagation can often be described in terms of multiple edge diffraction over building rooftops using a scalar field representation. This mechanism accounts well for measured field strength variations, but is time consuming to calculate accurately using standard methods. A rapid algorithm for calculating scalar diffraction over multiple building edges with arbitrary positioning is constructed. This model can be used for deterministic prediction of sector median field strengths including slow fading variations when appropriate building data exists. It is also applicable to terrain diffraction problems. For the case when only average building parameters are available a closed form solution to the problem of multiple diffraction over buildings of equal heights and spacings is derived. The solution is applicable to any antenna heights and so provides a rapid and efficient way to predict gross propagation characteristics. Application of Support Vector Machines to Fault Diagnosis and Automated Repair
No full textIn this paper we consider the benefits of applying modern machine learning techniques to the problem of Fault Diagnosis and Automated Repair. In the modern manufacturing environment, many aspects of the production line are logged automatically by various systems. These records are put to a multitude of uses including assisting stock control, and monitoring and improving the manufacturing process. This approach has lead to the accumulation of a huge amount of high-dimensional data, and does require new methods to handle it. In this paper we ask if the information commonly held by many companies can be used to assist the repair of faulty products on the production line. We examine the possibility of using pattern recognition techniques to determine correct repairs for faults from past production history. The relative merits of this method compared to other approaches (such as model-based reasoning) are also discussed. Finally, we give some preliminary results which indicate that pattern recognition methods such as the highly acclaimed Support Vector machine can be successfully applied in this area

An empirical model of long-term thermospheric density change
No full textPredicting the positions of satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) requires a comprehensive understanding of the dynamic nature of the atmosphere. For objects in LEO the most significant orbit perturbation is atmospheric drag, which is a function of the local atmospheric density from a layer in the atmosphere called the thermosphere. For long-term predictions of satellite orbits and ephemerides, any density trend in the thermosphere is a necessary consideration, not only for satellite operators, but also for studies of the future LEO environment in terms of space debris. Numerous studies of long-term thermospheric density change have been performed.Predictions by Roble & Ramesh (2002), along with evidence by Keating (2000), Emmert et al.(2004), Marcos et al. (2005), Qian et al. (2006) and Emmert et al. (2008), strongly suggest the existence of such a phenomenon. Therefore, the objective of the research presented in this thesis is to provide a novel method to evaluate quantitatively thermospheric density change. Satellite drag data is an effective medium through which one can investigate local thermospheric density and changes thereof. There are many ways of determining atmospheric density, but inferring thermospheric density from satellite drag data is a relatively cost-effective way of gathering in-situ measurements. To do this, knowledge about a satellite’s physical properties that are intrinsic to atmospheric drag is required. A study by Saunders et al. (2009) highlighted problems with estimating a satellite’s physical properties directly from data given explicitly by Two-Line Element (TLE) sets. This prompted an investigation into ways to estimate ballistic coefficients: a required satellite parameter associated with drag coefficient and area-to-mass ratio. A novel way of estimating satellite ballistic coefficients was derived and is presented in this thesis. Additionally, novel consideration of atmospheric chemical composition was applied on long-term drag coefficient variability. Using a quantitative estimate of a ballistic coefficient one can propagate numerically a satellite’s orbit and predict the effects of atmospheric drag. Given an initial satellite orbit from TLE data, one approach is to use an orbital propagator to predict the satellite’s state at some time ahead and then to compare that state with TLE data at the same epoch. The difference between the semi-major axes of the initial orbit and that after the orbit propagation is then integrated and can be used to estimate the global average density. The method employed in this study utilises this process. To achieve this, a specially developed, computer-based, numerical orbital propagator was written in the programming language C/C++. The underlying theories and implementation tests for this propagator are presented in this thesis

Se presentan dos nuevas distribuciones bivariadas, la distribución Bivariada Birnbaum Saunders Unitaria (BVUBS) y la distribución Bivariada Sinh-Normal Birnbaum Saunders Unitaria (BVUSHN), además como efecto natural el modelo de regresión para el caso de covariables en el modelo, empleando para ello el concepto de distribuciones condicionalmente especificadas, dichas distribuciones son capaces de modelar tasas y proporciones en el plano unidad, y presentan un mejor ajuste a datos comparadas con otras distribuciones. Igualmente, se presentan algunas propiedades generales de los modelos, valores esperados e inferencia por máxima verosimilitud y aplicación a datos reales. Conjuntamente al presente trabajo de maestría se publica el artículo The Multivariate Skewed Log-Birnbaum–Saunders Distribution and Its Associated Regression Model, [Martínez-Flórez et al., 2023], el cual se enfocó en la extensión multivariada de la distribución Sinh-Normal Unitaria, estudiando en detalle las propiedades de la distribución e inferencia estadística, se incluye un estudio de simulación asociado al modelo de regresión y dos aplicaciones con datos reales, logrando concluir que son potencialmente útiles para modelar datos de proporciones, tasas o índices. Two new bivariate distributions are presented, the Bivariate Unit-Birnbaum-Saunders distribution (BVUBS) and the Bivariate Unit-Sinh-Normal Birnbaum Saunders distribution (BVUSHN), as well as the natural effect the regression model for the case of covariates in the model, using the concept of conditionally specified distributions, these distributions are capable of modeling rates and proportions in the unit plane, and present a better fit to data compared to other distributions. Likewise, some general properties of the models, expected values and inference by maximum likelihood and application to real data are presented. The ?-subunit of the heterotrimeric G-protein affects jasmonate responses in Arabidopsis thaliana
Get PDFHeterotrimeric G-proteins have been implicated in having a role in many plant signalling pathways. To understand further the role of G-proteins, a preliminary experiment was performed to assess the impact of the G? subunit loss-of-function mutation gpa1-1 on the Arabidopsis transcriptome. The analysis indicated that the G? subunit may play a role in response to jasmonic acid (JA). Consistent with this, G? mutants showed a reduced response to JA in inhibition of chlorophyll accumulation and root growth, whilst G? gain-of-function plants overexpressing G? showed the opposite phenotype. The levels of JA and related compounds were unaffected in the gpa1-1 mutant, as was autoregulation of the Allene Oxide Synthase (AOS) gene that encodes a key enzyme for JA biosynthesis. In contrast, further analyses using G? loss- and gain-of-function Arabidopsis lines indicated that G? positively modulates the expression of the Vegetative Storage Protein (VSP) gene. This indicates that the G? subunit regulates a subset of JA-regulated genes defining a branch point in this signalling pathway in Arabidopsis. Further analysis of the impact of G? loss of function upon the JA-regulated transcriptome using Arabidopsis full genome arrays indicated that up to 29% of genes that are >2-fold regulated by JA in the wild type are misregulated in the G? mutant. In the next section, he focuses on selected Biblical motives and shows semantic shifts in the work. The thesis is subsequently concluded by a brief reflection on the function of Biblical themes.
