Physical properties of root-canal filling materials

    No full text
Root canal filling materials are used to obturate the root canal space. Several studies have been made in order to investigate their physical properties. A general review of these properties are discussed in this paper.Corresponding Author: Prof. Saad Al Nazhan, College of Dentistry, Department of Restorative Dental Sciences, King Saud University, P.O. Prevalence of pulp stones in Saudi adults

    No full text
Pulp stones (denticles) are discrete calcified aggregates that occur most frequently in the dental pulp"'. They are found in healthy, diseased and sometimes unerupled teeth'2 ' . Their number appear to increase with increasing age. They are usually detected during radiographic examination as a radiopaque masses of variable sizes and shape.Corresponding Author: Prof. Saad Al Nazhan, Professor, Department of Restorative Dental Sciences, Endodontics Division, King Saud University, College of Dentistry, P.O. The prevalence of two canals in mesial root of endodontically treated maxillary first molars among a Saudi Arabian sub-population

The aim of this in vivo study was to assess the incidence of two root canals in the mesial root of the endodontically treated permanent maxillary first molars of a Saudi Arabian sub-population. A clinical study of 352 root-canal treated permanent maxillary first molars was conducted. The teeth were examined clinically and radiographically. The results showed that 23.3 % of the examined teeth had two canals in the mesial root (17.0 % with one apical foramen and 6.3 % with two separate foramens). The occurrence of two canals in the mesial root of the maxillary first molar of a Saudi Arabian sub-population was within the normal range.Corresponding Author: Prof. Saad Al Nazhan, Professor, Department of Restorative Dental Sciences, Endodontics Division, College of Dentistry, King Saud University, P.O. Prognosis of endodontic surgery of failed cases treated by root canal therapy

    No full text
One hundred and eighty-four teeth treated by endodontic periradicular surgery by different operators were followed-up for 2 to 6 years. Clinical and radiographic examinations were used to assess the success of the therapy. The treatment results were considered successful in 78.3%. The maxillary anterior and mandibular molar teeth were the most commonly treated teeth. Apicectomy with retrograde amalgam filling was the most dominant type of endodontic surgery performed with 86.4% rate of success. The main conclusion is that retro fill should be used whenever possible. In addition, complete canal debridement and excellent orthograde fills of the root canal system obtained before performing the periradicular surgery will enhance the success rate of the surgery.Corresponding Author: Prof. Saad Al Nazhan, Professor, Department of Restorative Dental Sciences, Endodontics Division, College of Dentistry, King Saud University, P.O. College of Engineering, King Saud University, Saudi ArabiaThis paper is concerned with the development of a computer algorithm for computing the range of values of the confidence limits for a repeatedly measured factor. The paper briefly reviews the theory of the confidence limits for both large and small sample sizes. The presented algorithm uses the theory to compute confidence limits, for both large and small sample sizes. The algorithm is simple to program in any computer language, and it saves its users from having to resort to using statistical tables. Keywords: Confidence Limits; Measurements; Algorithms

    IT-governance practices: COBIT

    No full text
With the increasing dependence of enterprises on IT, and with the widely spreading use of e-business, IT governance is attracting increasing worldwide attention. A proper IT governance would promote enterprise performance through intelligent and efficient utilization of IT. In addition, standard IT governance practices would provide a suitable open environment for e-business that provides compatibility for inter-enterprise interaction. This review is concerned with introducing the current state of IT governance, in four main steps. First, the review identifies what is meant by IT governance, and presents the main organizations concerned with its development, namely: ISACA (Information Systems Audit and Control Association) and ITGI (Information Technology Governance Institute). Secondly, the review highlights COBIT (Control Objectives for Information and related Technologies) the widely acknowledged IT governance framework, produced by ITGI. Thirdly, the current state of COBIT use is addressed using a recent global survey. Finally, comments and recommendations on the future development of IT governance are concluded.King Abdul Aziz City for science & TechnologyCorresponding Author: Prof. Saad Haj Bakry, Department of Electrical Engineering, King Saud University, P.O. Scanning electron microscope evaluation of the cut root surface and root end preparation using various techniques

Hanan Ballcx BDS, Saad Al-Nazhan, BDS, MSB King Saud University College of Dentistry, P.O.Box 60169, Riyadh, Saudi ArabiaRoot end preparation was performed in the apical third of 20 endodontically treated extracted human teeth using high speed, low speed, straight surgical low speed handpieces and ultrasonic machine. The surface properties of the cut root surface was evaluated using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). In addition, the degree of superficial debris and those retained in the cavity of the retropreparation was also examined. Results showed that the smoothest cut surface with minimal debris was produced by #169 plain tapered fissure bur on both high and low speed handpieces. The ultrasonic tip disturbs the gutta-percha filling. Frequent and continuous irrigation is better used during the cutting procedure to remove a greater amount of debris

Frequent attendance in primary health care centers: Prevalence, patients characteristics and associated factors

    No full text
Assistant Professor Department of Public Administration College of Administrative Sciences King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi ArabiaObjectives: To determine the prevalence of frequent attendance at primary health care (PHC) centres and to determine the variables which may discriminate between frequent and non-frequent users. Methods: The study employed a self-administered questionnaire to collect data from patients aged 18 years or older who visited a PHC centre in Riyadh City. The questionnaire was designed to collect data on a number of variables including socio-demographic, access-related and health-related variables. In addition to the descriptive statistics, stepwise discriminant analysis was used to determine the variables which may discriminate between frequent and non-frequent users. Results: The results show that a small group of patients accounted for a high proportion of the workload in the PHC centre. Results of the stepwise discriminant analysis show that eight of the 16 variables were statistically significant discriminating variables between frequent and non-frequent users. Conclusion: The study highlights the importance of factors which motivate patients to attend PHC centres frequently. Health policy makers should understand these factors before implementing any intervention plans which attempt to persuade people to modify their health-seeking behaviour. Further research is needed to expand this study, and, in particular, to examine the appropriateness of visits made by the frequent users
