The Japanese woman traditional image and changing reality

    No full text
Japan is a country in which gender roles have appeared to be clearly circumscribed and stable. Both Westerners and many Japanese men have a vivid mental image of Japanese women as dependent, deferential, devoted to their families, and anything but ambitious. In this surprising new look at women in Japan, Sumiko Iwao shows that they are anything but the submissive female typically portrayed; rather, they hold positions equal to and sometimes more powerful than those of men in many spheres. Focusing particularly on the first post-World War II generation, the author explores the psychology and current circumstances of Japanese women. She examines their dominance in the family, revealing their intense involvement in their children's development - an involvement which, she argues, accounts for Japanese children's noted excellence in school. The author also explains the nature of the Japanese woman's control over her husband and, in the process, gives a fascinating account of the differences in male/female relationships in Japan and the United States. American women, Iwao maintains, have much to learn from Japanese women on this count. Iwao also explains how the shortage of Japanese workers is drawing more women into the job force, and she charts the changes we can expect in the workplace and in family life as a result of this shortage. Finally, she shows how as the Japanese population continues to decrease, women will gain ever greater control both in and out of the home. Fascinating profiles of contemporary Japanese, women illustrate the changes currently taking place in work and family structures in Japan. These changes will undoubtedly have a major impact on the Japanese economy. The Japanese Woman shows how the fate of the United States' most energetic competitor may well be found in the changes taking place among Japanese women today

Cecil B. DeMille and American culture: the silent era

    No full text
Cecil B. DeMille and American Culture demonstrates that the director, best remembered for his overblown biblical epics, was one of the most remarkable film pioneers of the Progressive Era. In this innovative work, which integrates cultural history and cultural studies, Sumiko Higashi shows how DeMille artfully inserted cinema into genteel middle-class culture by replicating in his films such spectacles as elaborate parlor games, stage melodramas, department store displays, Orientalist world's fairs, and civic pageantry. The director not only established his signature as a film author by articulating middle-class ideology across class and ethnic lines, but by the 1920's had become a trendsetter, with set and costume designs that influenced the advertising industry to create a consumer culture based on female desire. Drawing on a wealth of previously untapped material from the DeMille Archives and other collections, Higashi provides imaginative readings of DeMille's early feature films, viewing them in relation to the dynamics of social change, and she documents the extent to which the emergence of popular culture was linked to the genteel tradition

SUMIKO MIKIMOTO'S PIANO METHOD: A MODERN PHYSIOLOGICAL APPROACH TO PIANO TECHNIQUE IN HISTORICAL CONTEXT

    No full text
The purpose of this dissertation is to introduce Sumiko Mikimoto's piano method, The Correct Piano Technique (2004), which represents a modern approach to piano technique based on physiological and neurological study. The author places Mikimoto's method within a historical context, and shows how it offers a unique approach to piano playing with its anatomical-based awareness of localized muscle structures. Mikimoto not only describes different hand types, along with their accompanying strengths and weaknesses, but also presents a comprehensive picture of the development of piano technique through numerous exercises that are arranged incrementally. In addition to her various exercises, Mikimoto patented a finger-board in 1980 that helps the pianist stretch tendons and trains the small muscles of the hand and fingers. The strength of this method lies in its ability to address a broad range of technical challenges faced at many different levels from the beginner up through the advanced level pianist, as well as to help prevent tension-related injury. Broadly speaking, the historical context of piano technique shows a gradually increasing awareness of the body. Since the turn of the twentieth century and continuing up to the present day, the fields of physiology, neurology, and wellness have informed the teachings of many pedagogues such as Tobias Matthay, Otto Ortmann, George Kochevitsky, Gyorgy Sandor, and Seymour Bernstein. In this stream of studies of piano techniques and methods, Mikimoto's method may be viewed as an extension of the work of Otto Ortmann (who conducted extensive scientific studies on physiological mechanics of piano technique) and George Kochevitsky (who incorporated an understanding of the neurology of motor skills into his teaching). With the growing obsession with technique, there has been an increase in injuries among pianists. Tension is at the root of many injuries, and injury prevention has been a growing topic since 1980s. Mikimoto's careful analysis of students' physical characteristics (including the different shapes of fingers, wrist, hands, arms, and their tendons) provides insight into some of the causes of weakness and tension. It possible to use her analysis to find the root of some injuries, aid in rehabilitation, and perhaps prevent them from happening to future students

    No full text
A pesquisa mostra que, por meio de escolhas lexicais de Avaliatividade negativas, Lima Barreto busca construir um leitor ideal, capaz de compartilhar suas amarguras, de uma vida marcada pela discriminação sociorracialThis research focuses on socio-racial discrimination found along the novel Clara dos Anjos, by Lima Barreto, examining lexicogrammatical choices made by the author, not only to take a stand on the socio-racial issue, but also to get the reader s sympathy, creating a convincing picture black people s unconsciousness about their own servitude. For this purpose, it examines the question of identity, according to Bucholtz and Hall (2005) and Snow (2001) and the importance of the ideological context, according to Banks (2005). In methodological terms, this study is based on studies of semantic evaluation, an extension of the Interpersonal Metafunction in Systemic-Functional Linguistics (HALLIDAY, 1994, 2004) and on the Appraisal System (MARTIN, 2000) in an approach of Critical Linguistics (FOWLER, 1991). The analysis also has the support of Li (2010), for whom the sociocultural and sociopolitical ideologies are intertwined with language and speech. The author refers to Van Dijk (1993, 1997), who relates the macro notion of ideology to micro notions of discourse and social practices of group members. The study should answer the following questions: (a) which lexicogrammatical choices are made by Lima Barreto to address the socio-racial discrimination issue in the book Clara dos Anjos? (b) how are these choices characterized from the point of view of the Appraisal system? (c) how can Systemic-Functional Linguistics uncover the ideology that involves racial identity in the novel? The research shows that, through negative lexical choices of Appraisal, Lima Barreto seeks to build an ideal reader, able to share his sorrows, of a life marked by socio-racial discrimainationCoordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superio

    No full text
Em contrapartida, as diferenças nas estratégias persuasivas apontadas através das análises evidenciam a unicidade dos textos e seus autoresThe objective of this critical research is the identification of the persuasive strategies that authors from different times used to criticize power holders in their respective contexts. Therefore, the present research aims to conduct a multifunctional study in the theoretical-methodological perspective of the Systemic- Functional Grammar (SFG) of literary productions from three distinct eras, but similar in the relationship of the authors with the existing power and target of their criticisms, namely: (a) satirical chants of Gil Pérez Conde (thirteenth century); (b) poems of Gregorio de Matos Guerra (seventeenth century); and (c) songs of Chico Buarque de Holanda (twentieth century). The analysis of these productions is based on the SFG proposals. It considers the clause as a social event, for which the structure serves to woven together three concurrent types of meanings, or metafunctions: Ideational (refers to information), Interpersonal (refers to the interaction between the producer and the receiver involved in the linguistic process) and Textual (refers to the text construction according to the requirements of the socio-historical-cultural environment). The SFG involves not only the Critical Linguistics, which is an approach that tries to match a textual linguistic analysis method with a social language theory in political and ideological processes, but also the Modality and Appraisal a theoretical extension of the Interpersonal metafunction that blends the author`s positioning with the message content. In this confrontation against the authorities, Appraisal works alongside of the care authors show redressing of affronts to face posed by face-threatening, or politeness. The research aims to answer the following questions: (a) How is power criticism made in the chosen different times? (b) What lexicogrammatical choices were made to criticize in terms of the Ideational and Interpersonal metafunctions? (c) What did rhetorical elements build the persuasion in this process? The results show that the dialogism of the texts points out to the use of similar persuasive structures that identify a satirical genre subcategory, which aggregates texts due to the repression context wrapping them. On the other hand, differences in the persuasive strategies, identified through the analysis, present the uniqueness of the texts and their author
