Live-streaming the goddess in the times of COVID-19: A digital ethnography of diasporic Durga Puja festivals in pandemic Britain

    No full text
Copyright © 2022 The Author. Diasporic Durga Puja festivals in contemporary Britain have emerged as focal points in the religious lives of Hindu Bengalis. However, the public health measures introduced because of the COVID-19 pandemic made it impossible to host in-person indoor Durga Puja festivals in Britain in the autumn of 2020. In response, many UK-based Durga Puja organisers staged small-scale ritual worship of the goddess in private, and then livestreamed it to their members through social media. Based on participant observation of these festival livestreams and remote interviews with Durga Puja organisers from across Britain, in this article I demonstrate that far from being a rupture, these blended Durga Puja festivals mark a development in existing templates of mediatisation of religious practices and are part of the wider continuum of adaptations that characterise diasporic lived religion. I also reflect on how internal hierarchies within the diaspora played out vis-à-vis blended Pujas amidst the pandemic.Economic and Social Research Council (UK) Postdoctoral Fellowship (ESRC Grant Ref: ES/V011952/1)

Rituals provide stability and strength to people in their daily lives. Modifications in performance or the materiality of daily rituals can occur after a migration. The bachelor thesis deals with these changes using the example of the materiality of the Hindu ritual Puja. The aim of the work is to consider the extent to which appropriation processes take place in materiality as a result of migration and whether these can be an example of ritual dynamics. Based on the results of a project conducted by the author in 2021/22 in the Rhine-Main area, it is described which materials are being used by the believers, which procurement processes are conducted and which significance any changes might have for the believers. The hypotheses are created and proven, that an appropriation process and thus a ritual-dynamic process takes place and that the Puja, due to its flexibility, represents a suitable ritual for the future research in ritual dynamics. First, the author presents the ethnological concept of ritual, including the ritual types by Ronald L. Grimes and the theories of ritual studies are discussed. Furthermore, the state of research in the field of ritual dynamics is explained using the results and theories of the Sonderforschungsbereich 619 (SFB 619) in Heidelberg (2002-2013). After a brief presentation of the Hindu faith and the basics of the Puja, the findings from the project are presented. Based on the results of interviews, inactive and participating observations, and a survey by way of written questionnaire, the author describes the change in the materiality of the ritual using the example of the food offered (naivedya) and the usage of the water of the holy river Ganges (gangagel). The flexibility of the ritual is outlined using examples illustrated by Informants. Finally, the hypotheses are examined and an outlook into the future of the topic from the author's point of view is given

Ambition and Competition among Hindu Bengali Elites in Eighteenth- and Nineteenth-Century Calcutta

In eighteenth- and nineteenth-century urban colonial Calcutta, Hindu Bengali gentry celebrated numerous festivals at home, including Rathajatra, Doljatra, Jagaddhatri Puja, and Kali Puja, and even marked the birthdays and weddings of their pets with grandeur. Durga Puja, held in autumn, stood out as the most elaborate and significant. It provided affluent Bengali families with a chance to display opulence by hosting lavish gatherings and inviting prominent Europeans to their newly built mansions. Competition among them was fierce to showcase their wealth and status. For many of these families, Durga Puja was not just a personal celebration but also a means of cultivating relationships with British and other European residents who held positions of authority or influence, by which they sought to elevate their social standing and prosperity. Upon initial publication, the Journal of Festive Studies included an incorrect affiliation for the author of this article, Monolina Bhattacharyya. We sincerely apologize for our mistake. REDESAIN PUSAT PERBELANJAAN KABUPATEN SUBANG DENGAN KONSEP ARSITEKTUR BIOKLIMATIK

    No full text
Puja Sera Subang is a Shopping Center area owned by the Subang Regency Government which is located in the center of Subang Regency. Since 1990 Puja Sera continues to experience the peak of glory as the main destination for the people of Subang to shop for various food and clothing needs. In 2012 Puja Sera experienced a fire which caused about 300 stalls of traders to lose their stall area. Regarding the fire disaster experienced by Puja Sera Subang, the Subang Regional Government has provided temporary kios facilities to traders affected by the fire disaster. The placement of temporary kios makes Puja Sera's zoning irregular because it is built on an area of 1,750m2 a total of ±190 kios. Utility problems in waterways cause inundation due to the sewer not leading to the Puja Sera drainage area. The presence of puddles is also caused by damaged roads. Based on these issues, the author offers an effort to redesign the Puja Sera which is integrated with the Bioclimatic approach so that the Puja Sera building can respond to the local climate and produce energy efficient buildings. Bioclimatics is a science that studies the relationship between climate and life, especially the effects of climate on health and daily activities. With the Redesign of the Subang City Shopping Center, it consumes 112 kWh/m2/year of energy, so this building is included in the criteria for an energy-efficient building

    Designing Games For Teaching Typography

    No full text
This thesis investigates interactive and engaging learning experiences to teach fundamentals of typography to anyone who otherwise does not have any formal education of typography. The thesis uses two different approaches to do so–one where learning outcomes and objectives are direct, and another in which they are indirect. The first approach explores games that can be used to effectively educate users about the fundamentals of typography, like anatomy of type by understanding the structure of letterforms, and classification of typography. The second approach investigates how an app might be used to learn about typography from a user’s surroundings. Design research methods include a studio-based approach, where evaluative testing and observational trials were core sources of insights. Other methods include interviews, surveys and precedent reviews. These insights further inform studio prototypes of varying fidelities and ultimately, final mockups for the proposed forms of engagement. Thus, this project hopes to make typography accessible to everyone who is interested in learning about typography by using a variety of physical and digital mediums.Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Design
