Why Professional Development Matters: A Case of College Teachers in Karachi
The predominant teachers’ professional development practice in Pakistan can be stated as limited, fragmented, short termed, and pre-packaged as it occurs on margins of having more focus on training sessions rather than problem-solving. This qualitative research aims to share the results of a small-scale study, involving 12 college teachers working in public sector institutions on their perceptions of professional development and the support they get from their educational institutions. It then proposes a three-branched solution that includes: (a) government and institution supported PD; (b) availability and delivery of multiple PD approaches based on the needs assessment of the teachers; and (c) on-going follow-up and evaluation of teachers’ professional development system to suit the local context. This study recommends that effective PD, if considered wisely, can become the process through which educators can examine thoughtfully and critically the purpose, role, structure, and organization of the institutions concerning the increasingly diverse students and communities they serve. The educational field in Pakistan needs a new ethics for PD; one that is sincerely supported and reflected in the educational policies of the country
Influence of Parenting Style on Children’s Behaviour
This research determined the influence of parents and their
parenting styles on children’s behavior. The author examined
different parenting styles to understand which style leads the
children to be juvenile delinquent, that ultimately makes the
children low academic achievers. In this paper, the researcher
attempts to bring an original contribution through the identification
of what is missing in the literature thus offering recommendations for
future research on the role of parents in shaping the future of
their children. Much research has been done on the role of
parents in shaping the future of their children; however, more
comprehensive research needs to be conducted on the role of
parents and different parenting styles on their children’s behavior. A
qualitative paradigm was preffered using in-depth interviews
with two mothers of children with delinquent behavior. The
findings revealed that authoritarian parenting style leads the
children to become rebellious and adopt problematic behavior
due tomore than necessary power exercised on children by
parents. In contrast, authoritative parenting style is effective for
children, as it encourages moderate parenting style. There is a
demonstrated need reported in the literature that parents who
spend maximum time with their children reduce the probability of
developing delinquent behavior among their children. Spending

Measuring school support for learning English as a foreign language through SSELL
Schools label themselves to be English medium considering that by implementing textbooks in English language and adopting English as a medium of instruction is sufficient to be English. In this regard, there is a need for a checklist or selfassessment tool to enable the schools to evaluate themselves to see their positioning as an English medium school as well as understanding their role in it. This study aimed to develop a scale to enable the English language teaching practitioners to explore if the non-elite schools successfully fulfilled this claim. The scale construction methodology was used to carry out this investigation. The sample comprised of 134 participants including school principals, coordinators and teachers randomly selected using convenient sampling methods. A reliability analysis was carried out to establish the authenticity and applicability of the tool. A satisfactory score of test-retest reliability revealed the scale as a good fit to evaluate school support for English language learning; therefore, the scale can be stated as acceptable based on its psychometric properties. Keywords: English language, official language policy, scale construction, school assessment
High gain switched-inductor-double-leg converter with wide duty range for dc microgrid
In a dc microgrid, efficient high gain converters are needed to raise the voltage level of low voltage power sources such as photovoltaic, fuel cells, etc. In this article, a high-gain switched-inductor-double-leg converter for dc microgrid is proposed. The proposed converter is capable of providing higher gain devoid of using any transformer, coupled inductor, and multiple voltage lifting techniques, e.g., triple lift, quadruple lift, super lift, etc. The operating modes of the converter are controlled using three switches in double duty mode. Compared to single duty converter, the double duty converter provides a flexibility in selection of duty cycle for switch to achieve desired output voltage and controlling inductor current ripple magnitude by selecting appropriate duty cycles. Moreover, two duty cycles make the converter capable of achieving high gain with wide duty range and an individual switch does not need to operate at very large duty cycle to achieve high voltage gain. The topological description, operating principles, steady-state voltage gain analysis during continuous conduction mode and discontinuous continuous mode, boundary condition, and voltage and current analysis, efficiency analysis, comparison and design of the proposed are presented. The proposed converter is tested in laboratory to validate its feasibility and performance.Manuscript received May 18, 2020; revised September 2, 2020; accepted September 14, 2020. Digitalization in Higher Education: Reflections of Teacher Educators on Institutional Support for Improving Quality of Teaching and Learning
The study focuses on the impact of digitalization in higher education by exploring the reflections of teacher educators on the digital support provided by their institutions to enhance the quality of teaching and learning. The study followed a Descriptive Quantitative Case Study approach using quantitative data to describe the characteristics of a specific case or situation systematically. The targeted population consisted of faculty members of public sector universities in Karachi, Pakistan. The collected data was analysed through a statistical technique known as Pareto analysis, which was performed to identify the most significant categories of digital tools and techniques desired by the faculty members at the higher education level. The findings of the study reveal that digitalization greatly influences teaching and learning; however, the institutional support at public sector universities needs serious attention to improve the quality of teaching and learning and the effectiveness of digital tools and technologies in improving educational outcomes. The results suggest that institutions\u27 efforts in integrating digital resources have a positive influence on the overall learning experience. This research contributes to the growing body of knowledge on the role of digitalization in higher education and provides valuable insights for institutions aiming to enhance the quality of teaching and learning practices
Challenges to Implement the Inclusive Education in Pakistan: A Case of Intellectually Disabled Children
This study aimed to explore the current education status of Intellectually Disabled Children and the challenges to inclusion of Intellectually Disabled Children in Pakistan. Using a quantitative research approach, data was gathered from the families of students having intellectual disabilities using mother’s reports about the interaction of normal sibling with intellectually disabled children in a school environment. The findings of the study reveal that the level of warmth is much higher in the inclusive education classes as compared to the Rivalries, Relative Status and Conflicts with intellectually disabled students. A higher level of empathy increases the sense of responsibility, tolerance, and encouragement. The research strongly recommends that the educationist and professionals must initiate the teachers’ awareness programs about disabilities. Government and media can assist in spreading awareness about relationship and interactions among students by establishing awareness programs that focuses on the implementation of the inclusive education systems in Pakistan
