Sarah Fielding: Satire and Subversion in the Eighteenth-Century Novel
This study of Sarah Fielding (1710―68) is an original contribution to Fielding scholarship that has a dual purpose: to support those who are striving to re-introduce her to the modern literary landscape in an effort to restore her eighteenth-century literary standing, and to firmly establish Fielding as an early feminist writer. It is argued here that throughout her oeuvre Fielding challenged prevailing traditions that denied women a choice, particularly in education, employment and marriage. These themes are also considered in the political treatises of Mary Astell (1666―1731) and Mary Wollstonecraft (1759―97), who are now widely recognised as feminist writers.
It is further argued that Fielding’s subversion in fiction of the English patriarchal system is underscored by her unorthodox performance in the literary arena. This is fully explored alongside her use of sentimentalism as a literary tool with which she challenges her seemingly inhumane society. Fielding’s interest in ‘the Labyrinths of the Mind’ (in modern terms, human psychology) will also be addressed as will her placement in the history of feminism and her placement in the sentimental novel tradition. Fielding’s performance as a literary critic will be compared with the few female authors who, like her, dared to publish literary criticism during her writing career. Accordingly, extracts from Fielding’s novels and her two critical pamphlets will be thoroughly examined.
An updated biography of Fielding that is also included here will provide evidence for a further claim, that her fiction is autobiographical in part. A comprehensive account of Fielding’s performance as a literary critic forms the final chapter of this work. It is the first full-length examination of her contribution to the genre and includes an appraisal of her recently unearthed critical pamphlet entitled A Comparison Between the Horace of Corneille and The Roman Father of Mr. Whitehead (1750) that is yet to be formerly attributed to her. Ultimately this study of Fielding will go far beyond what has previously been written about this remarkable eighteenth-century author, particularly regarding her feminist activity
The 'true use of reading' : Sarah Fielding and mid eighteenth-century literary strategies.
PhDThe aim of this thesis is to explore, by examining her life and
works, how Sarah Fielding (1710-68) established her identity as an author.
The definition of her role involves her notions of the functions of
writing and reading.
Sarah Fielding attempts to invite readers to form a sense of ties
by tacit understanding of her messages. As she believes that a work
of literature is produced through collaboration between the writer and
the reader, it is an important task in her view to show her attentiveness
toward reading practice. In her consideration of reading, she has two
distinct, even opposite views of her audience: on the one hand a familiar
and limited circle of readers with shared moral and cultural values and
on the other potential readers among the unknown mass of people. The
dual targets direct her to devise various strategies. She tries to
appeal to those who can endorse and appreciate her moral values as well
as her learning. Her writings and letters testify that she is sensitive
to the demands of the literary market, trying to lead the taste of readers
by inventing new forms.
The thesis opens with an overview of Sarah Fielding's career,
followed by a consideration of her critical attention to the roles of
reading. I go on to examine the narrative structures and strategies
she deploys, with a particular emphasis on her use of the epistolary
method. The following chapter deals with her attention to the reading
of the moral message tangibly embodied in her educational writing. It
is followed by an analysis of the activity which earned her a reputation
as a learned woman. Various as the forms of her works are, they invariably
reflect her attempt to balance herself between the two demands of
inventiveness and familiarity

We interviewed him about his work on William August Bowles and about his article that appeared in this issue, titled “William August Bowles on the Gulf Coast, 1787-1803: Unraveling a Labyrinthine Conundrum.”https://stars.library.ucf.edu/fhq-podcast/1005/thumbnail.jp
Oral History Interview with Gilbert Meilaender
This interview was conducted with Gilbert Meilaender as part of “Moral Histories: Voices and Stories from the Founding Figures of Bioethics,” an oral history project of the Johns Hopkins University Berman Institute of Bioethics. Professor Meilaender is a Senior Research Professor at Valparaiso University. His areas of expertise include theological ethics, Christian ethics, human dignity, the philosophy of friendship, and adoption. He is the author of several books, including Bioethics: A Primer for Christians, Not by Nature but by Grace: Forming Families through Adoption, and Friendship: A Study in Theological Ethics. Professor Meilaender discusses his upbringing as the son of a Lutheran pastor, his education at Concordia Senior College and his path to academia after being ordained as a Lutheran minister. He discusses his graduate studies at Princeton University with mentor Paul Ramsey. He talks about his identity as a theological ethicist in a time when higher education was trying to distinguish the academic study of religion from theological study. He also discusses his experience with foster care and adoption, which shapes his view on reproductive technologies and the implications of the unquestioned use of such technologies. Professor Meilaender talks about his involvement with The Hastings Center and his work on the President’s Council on Bioethics during the George W. Bush administration. He notes that the Council’s work was philosophical, in contrast to law- and policy-oriented bioethics. He discusses the influence of the Council’s work on his thinking about human dignity, as well as the limits of bioethics, his approach to politics, and his belief in including religious views in public debate. The conversation concludes with reflections on his influences, friendships, correspondence with readers, and views on end-of-life care

Adapting musicology's use of affect theories to contemporary theatre making: Directing Martin Crimp's attempts on her life
Copyright @ Intellect 2011Adopting and adapting musicology's use of affect theories, specifically Jeremy Gilbert's idea of an 'affective analysis' and David Epstein's idea of 'shaping affect', this article looks at Martin Crimp's Attempts on Her Life from a practitioner's perspective. It investigates the challenges and benefits of adopting an 'affective approach' to directing recent theatre texts that stress the musicality and corporeality of language along with, and at times above, its signifying roles. Rather than locating Aristotelian dramatic climaxes based on narratological or characterological progression, an affective approach seeks to identify moments of affective intensity, which produce a different sort of impact by working on a 'body-first' methodology, rather than the directly cerebral. That this embodied impact is not ultimately meaningless is one of affect theory's most vital assertions. This approach has resonance in terms of how directors, performers and critics/theorists approach work of this type

Administrators’Message
It is with great pride that we, the administration team at Gilbert Paterson
Community School, have served you over the past year. At times the 2001-02
school year has been difficult and at times exciting. But together we have grown
as a community to become caring, concerned and compassionate citizens.
The events of September 11, 2001 brought a sudden realization that we in
Lethbridge do not live in isolation from the rest of the world. In spite of this
unrest and uncertainty, there has never been a more favourable time in this
great nation of ours. Young Canadians have educational and lifelong opportunities
abound. The choices presented can be mind-boggling, as technology
has created a limitless boundary to our imagination. Yet, it is reality, which
forces us to become strong citizens. Emerson said, “It is one of the most
beautiful compensations of life that no man can sincerely try to help another
without helping himself’. Young Canadians like yourselves must take the
opportunities and advantages you have to work hard and make Lethbridge,
Alberta, Canada and the World a community of caring, concerned and compassionate
citizens just as you have done at Paterson.

On August 22 & 23, 2001, 22 students and 16 teachers
participated in a Leadership Retreat at Gilbert Paterson
Community They painted, ate, played games, ate, designed
logos, ate, had a fashion show, ate, played ninjas, and got to
know each other really well. The Ninjas in the Dark game got
pretty crazy according to the stories the next morning. But
they sure learned how to have fun and how to be good leaders
for the years to come!

Writing on Stone
October 10-12,2001
Oct. 10- Mr. Boulet gathered his group
outside of GPCS. Along with Mrs.
Lysak and Mrs. King, they boarded a
bus for Writing-On-Stone with none
other than Mr. T. Spackman driving!
Did they know what they were in for?
Day One:winds calm but cool. Students
set up camp in designated areas and then
explored while the 3 fierce leaders,
Boulet, King and Lysak lunched. One
group returned from their explorations
to find that a few birds had chewed their
way into their food boxes. Sure nice of
them to share with the locals!.
With snacks in hand to feed Mr. Boulet
and themselves, the students were lead
on a hike around the park. They saw
beautiful hoodoos and land features,
cool ancient writings and SNAKES! Yep!
Having only heard stories about snakes
and slitheries, the group actually saw a
rattle snake crawling around in his hole.
That night the wind shook the tents
while the coyotes howled while they
slept.
hen are we going
—HOME? IIIKnWX.
Day Two: windy, rainy, cold- The park
officer came by with her bus and took
the group on an official tour of the
Writing On Stone park. She told stories
about the native people who use to live
on the land and pointed out the different
writings left behind. Once back at the
campsite, the group played Capture the
Flag and explored the hoodoos nearby.
Johnny, however, tried desperately to
please his team and ended up with a
sprained ankle. Needless to say, he had
to get Mr. Boulet to give him a piggy
back ride back to the campsite where he
was attended to by Nurse Lysak.
That night, after roasting marshmallows
and singing campfire songs, they fell
asleep to the howling of the coyotes and
the snoring of their leader, Mr.
Boulet......or was it Mrs. Lysak????
Day Three: Up and at it at the crack of
dawn to return to GPCS. What an
adventure!

A very special thank-you goes out those students who helped out with the yearbook in little
ways. There are just too many to mention all of them. You know who you are!

Another turning point, a fork stuck in the road
Time grabs you by the wrist, directs you
where to go
So make the best of this test and don't ask why
It's not a question, but a lesson learned in time
It's something unpredictable, but in the end is

Pre-clinical development of viral vectored transmission-blocking malaria vaccines
Malaria transmission-blocking vaccine candidate antigens have been developed to induce antibodies using different delivery systems, mainly protein-in-adjuvant formulations, independently in various laboratories giving varied transmission-blocking activity (TBA). However, only one candidate antigen has been tested in clinical trials. In order to advance the most efficacious target(s) for possible clinical development, a rank order of the leading antigens based on TBA in a head-to-head comparison using a single delivery platform was made. Candidate antigens, AnAPN1, PfsHAP2, Pfs230-C, Pfs25, and Pfs48/45 (with or without N-glycosylation site substitution), were generated as recombinant viral-vectored vaccines using simian adenovirus and modified vaccinia Ankara and administered to mice in a heterologous prime-boost regimen. Vaccine-induced antibody responses were induced to all except PfsHAP2 were maintained up to ten and a half months post-boost. TBA was assessed at the peak response against Plasmodium falciparum NF54 laboratory strain and African field isolates by ex vivo membrane feeding assays in Anopheles stephensi and A. gambiae respectively. Antibodies to three antigens [Pfs230-C, Pfs25 and Pfs48/45+NGln] had TBA against P. falciparum NF54, and those against Pfs230-C and Pfs25 consistently showed efficacy regardless of the parasite exposure in both mosquito species. Further analysis of antibody responses to these two candidate antigens showed concentration-dependent efficacy against P. falciparum field isolates. In a rabbit study, responses to Pfs230-C, Pfs25 and Pfs48/45+NGln also showed IgG concentration-dependent efficacy. To assess TBA against AnAPN1, antibody responses to three fragments were tested. TBA was observed only against N-terminal 135 amino acid fragment. Pfs230-C and Pfs25 were generated as fusion vaccines using either a self-cleaving or glycine-proline linker sequence. Comparable antibody responses were induced between the two fusion strategies that had synergistic effects at inhibiting P. falciparum NF54 development in A. stephensi
