Effectiveness of color coded diabetic control monitoring charts among elderly diabetics attending outreach primary care geriatric clinics in rural Karnataka: An open label randomized control trial
Introduction: Type 2 diabetes mellitus problem is progressively rising every day. The adherence to the treatment approaches and health-seeking make major difference in case of diabetics particularly elderly. Visual tools improve the involvement of patients in their care, especially among populations with low health literacy. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of color-coded diabetic control monitoring charts on glycemic control among elderly diabetics. Methodology: 144 elderly diabetic patients attending rural primary care geriatric clinics were randomized into two groups. Those randomized to the intervention group received the color-coded diabetic monitoring chart and a health education package in addition to the usual consultation services. Baseline and 1-year follow-up glycated hemoglobin (HbA1C) values were used to assess the effectiveness of the intervention. Results: The results of multivariate linear regression analysis showed that there was an average reduction of 0.265% in HbA1C value in the intervention group when compared to the nonintervention group when adjusted for baseline HbA1C and number of visits during the intervention period (β coefficient = 0.265,P < 0.05). Conclusion: Color-coded diabetes charts are effective in achieving glycemic control among elderly diabetics, and steps should be made to inculcate visually appealing management approaches in case of elderly diabetic patients

Taking Back Control
This project traces the role the North Sea has played in the history of the United Kingdom, with a particular focus on territorial control. In a post-Brexit scenario where supply chains between the island and the continent are interrupted, the contiguous zone just twelve nautical miles from the coast of the UK provides an ideal economic grey zone. A free-floating object in occupying this territory is not subject to the UK’s visa or customs regimes, nor is it at the mercy of the high seas. The project thus capitalizes on its position to subvert the exclusionary act of Brexit. Tapping into existing flows of secondary resources across the North Sea, the project manifests as a recycling plant which utilizes waste to produce recycled concrete made of bottom ash and plastic waste recovered from the sea. This new raw material is moulded into modular islands which are given birth to by the machine; thereby using unwanted matter generated in a terrestrial context to create a productive landscape in the middle of the sea. The project contests the exploitative nature of natural extraction within the North Sea and renders visible processes that are easy to forget by creating a physical structure that thrives at sea and exists independent of the land
A study of the characteristics of crimes committed by mentally ill offenders.
Thesis (M.Med.)-University of Natal, Durban, 1992.There is ongoing controversy concerning the relationship between crime, violence and mental illness. Studies from the first half of the century reported low arrest rates amongst the mentally ill. However recent researchers have suggested an increase in crime amongst the mentally ill since the advent of deinstitutionalisation, while other studies have implicated social factors, inadequate community facilities and prior criminality to account for this apparent trend. A longitudinal prospective and descriptive study was therefore planned to investigate the relationship between crime and mental illness. All consecutive admissions to the Midlands Hospital Observation Unit during a six month period were included in this study. Relevant information was obtained from personal interviews by the author and from court records. The final study sample consisted of those in whom a final finding
was made in terms of Section 78(2) of the Criminal Procedures Act 51 of 1977. The significant findings were:
DEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS. The majority of mentally ill offenders were young males in the age range 20-29 years.
CHARACTERISTICS OF CRIMES COMMITTED BY MENTALLY ILL OFFENDERS. The majority of mentally ill offenders were apprehended for property offences, theft being most common. Chi square analysis produced the following statistically significant findings pertaining to mentally ill offenders: 1. Mentally ill offenders committed significantly more property offences. Crimes were significantly less dangerous and less physically violent. 2. Fewer crimes involved use of a weapon. 3. Significantly more crimes were seemingly without a motive or in response to an hallucination or delusion. 4. Offences were seldom planned. 5. Crimes were more visible, most occurring during the day, with little attempt made to conceal the act. In conclusion most mentally ill offenders committed commonplace offences which due to their greater visibility may have predisposed them being channelled through the criminal justice system. Investigation revealed a need for further research into this controversial sub-group of mentally ill patients
Studies on the Influence of Charge Inducer and it’s Combination with P-gp Inhibitor to Improve the Oral Bioavailability of Nimodipine via Submicron Lipid Emulsions
Background: Nimodipine (NM), is a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker with poor oral bioavailability (BA) of about 13% due to first-pass metabolism and P-gp efflux. Objective: The present work aimed to study the influence of the charge inducer and its combination with P-gp inhibitor to improve the oral bioavailability of NM by developing a suitable delivery system of Submicron Lipid Emulsion (SME). Methods: Five SME formulations of NM were prepared by homogenization followed by ultrasonication. Prepared SMEs were characterized for particle size, PDI, Zeta Potential (ZP), Entrapment Efficiency (EE), and drug content. In vitro, release studies were performed in 0.1N HCl and pH 6.8 phosphate buffer by open tube method. The physical stability of all NM–SMEs was tested by the individual effects of centrifugation, dilution (desorption stress), and storage. Bioavailability studies were conducted on male Wistar rats after oral administration of NM suspension and F1 to F5 SME formulations. Results and conclusion: Five NM- SMEs were developed with a mean size ranging from 93 - 137 nm, Zeta potential of – 26 ± 1 mV (negatively charged), +45.8 to +46.3 mV (positively charged), and PDI of 0.15 - 0.25. The in vitro release studies showed that relatively more cumulative percentage release of NM – SMEs in 0.1N HCl than in pH phosphate buffer during 24 hours. The physical stability of NM–SMEs indicated that they were stable to the effects of centrifugation, dilution, and storage. Pharmacokinetic (PK) studies showed that the oral bioavailability of NM in F4 SME was significantly higher than that of all other formulations. Taken together, the results indicated the development of a stable lipid-based carrier, F4 SME to improve the oral bioavailability of this drug by minimizing first-pass metabolism due to lymphatic transport, reducing the efflux by P-gp inhibition, and further, by increased uptake of the positively charged F4 SME globules by enterocytes. Future: The research study findings increase the possibility of developing NM F4 SME by the pharmaceutical industry for the patient’s benefit
A youth empowerment model designed to tackle school violence in South Africa
School-based violence is of major concern in the South African schooling system, particularly in secondary schools. School-based violence has a negative impact on the physical, social, cognitive and emotional well-being of learners and teachers. To compound matters, family and community environment also play a role in escalating school violence. There is a need to develop interventions that are evidence-based and developmental in nature to address the issue of reducing school-based violence. Youth empowerment can be used as a helpful strategy to address the issue of school-based violence. This scholarly book focuses on using the framework of youth empowerment to address the issue of school-based violence. Through sound research, the author proposes that schools should involve learners in decision-making around school policies and design strategies to address school violence to create safer schools and a better school climate. The author further posits using key aspects of youth empowerment in school violence campaigns and programmes to increase youth motivation to collectively influence changes within their school through a process of shared decision-making, collective vision, and partnership with young people
DOMINASI TERHADAP PEREMPUAN YANG DIASOSIASIKAN DENGAN ALAM PADA FILM AVATAR (2009): KAJIAN ECOFEMINISME
Avatar movie (2009) reveals the discourse about the women assossiated with the nature. This study uses Ecofeminism theory to answer the problem above. This study uses qualitative approach added with the discourse analysis method by Sara Mills to look for the subject and object position between the women associated with the the nature and the men in the movie. The data source of this study is Avatar movie by James Cameron supported with the books of the theory used in this study. The results of this study show that this movie always tries to perpetuate the position of the women who naturally have association with the nature that can be seen through the characters of Grace and Neytiri. Grace is described as the scientist who definitely has passion and love towards the nature until she can memorize every type of creature in the planet of Pandora and can understand their feeling well. Neytiri is described as the one who has intimate relation with the nature until she can do something impossible to do with it that the others cannot do. Their “special” ability does not make them has the power towards the others because there are the men who is identified themselves as the subject and identified Grace and Neytiri as the object and mediator to get the power and everything they want

Nonlinear Speech Analysis and Modeling for Malayalam Vowel Recognition
AbstractThis paper presents a novel method for the recognition of Malayalam vowel phonemes using nonlinear speech parameters such as maximal Lyapunov exponent and Phase Space Anti-diagonal Point Distribution. Reconstructed phase space is used as a base for extracting these features. The results show that the proposed nonlinear features have significant discriminatory power. The combined feature vectors of nonlinear feature and MFCC features yield increased recognition accuracy for five Malayalam vowel phonemes
