    Validity condition for high-fidelity Digitized Quantum Annealing

    10 pages and 4 figuresDigitizing an adiabatic evolution is a strategy able to combine the good performance of gate-based quantum processors with the advantages of adiabatic algorithms, providing then a hybrid model for efficient quantum information processing. In this work we develop validity conditions for high fidelity digital adiabatic tasks. To this end, we assume a digitizing process based on the Suzuki-Trotter decomposition, which allows us to introduce a Digitized Adiabatic Theorem. As consequence of this theorem, we show that the performance of such a hybrid model is limited by the fundamental constraints on the adiabatic theorem validity, even in ideal quantum processors. We argue how our approach predicts the existence of intrinsic non-adiabatic errors reported by R. Barends et al., Nature 534, 222 (2016) through an empirical study of digital annealing. In addition, our approach allows us to explain the existence of a scaling of the number of Suzuki-Trotter blocks for the optimal digital circuit with respect to the optimal adiabatic total evolution time, as reported by G. B. Mbeng et al., Phys. Rev. B 100, 224201 (2019) through robust numerical analysis of digital annealing.     Eclectic British author Alan Moore (b. 1953) is one of the most acclaimed and controversial comics writers to emerge since the late 1970s. He has produced a large number of well-regarded comic books and graphic novels while also making occasional forays into music, poetry, performance, and prose. In Alan Moore: Comics as Performance, Fiction as Scalpel , Annalisa Di Liddo argues that Moore employs the comics form to dissect the literary canon, the tradition of comics, contemporary society, and our understanding of history. The book considers Moore's narrative strategies and pinpoints the main thematic threads in his works: the subversion of genre and pulp fiction, the interrogation of superhero tropes, the manipulation of space and time, the uses of magic and mythology, the instability of gender and ethnic identity, and the accumulation of imagery to create satire that comments on politics and art history. Examining Moore's use of comics to scrutinize contemporary culture, Di Liddo analyzes his best-known works-- Swamp Thing, V for Vendetta, Watchmen, From Hell, Promethea , and Lost Girls .     Activation of Aryl C-H and C-X bonds by a pincer-ligated 'PCP' iridium complex

    The activation of carbon-hydrogen (C-H) bonds mediated by transition metal complexes is a fundamental step in a vast array of chemical transformations and industrial processes. As such, research into the understanding of the factors governing both efficiency and selectivity of these reactions has been intense. The work presented in this thesis comprises results of experiments designed to evaluate the ability of a pincer-ligated iridium complex to activate the C-H bonds of several classes of aryl substrates. The pincer-ligated iridium fragment (PCP)Ir (PCP = {κ3-2,6-bis[(di-tert-butylphosphino)methyl]phenyl}) rapidly and reversibly adds the C-H bond of benzene, giving a kinetically labile addition product. The kinetics and thermodynamics of C-H activation of a series of halogen-, alkyl-, and trifluoromethyl-substituted arenes were studied with a particular focus on determining whether “directing” effects play a significant role. In regard to electronic effects, it was observed that electron withdrawing aryl substituents favor C-H activation. Products of C-H activation ortho to weakly or non-coordinating substituents (e.g., Cl, Br, CF3) are kinetically more stable than those of the meta- and para-substituted analogs, due to steric crowding in the transition state for addition and elimination. However, there is no thermodynamic preference for the ortho-substituted complexes. In addition to C-H activation, (PCP)Ir also activates C-X bonds (X = Cl, Br) under certain conditions, yielding product mixtures through a mechanism that remains unclear. Several series of polycyclic aromatic substrates (naphthalenes, biphenyls, bipyridines, and associated tricyclic analogs) were also studied, giving insight into the utility of aryl C-H activation and preferred binding modes of the (PCP)Ir fragment. Not surprisingly, steric effects play a significant role in the regioselectivity of polycyclic aromatic C-H bond activation by (PCP)Ir. Cyclometalation reactions resulting from single or double C-H activation processes yield particularly stable products. Additional results included an unexpected C-C activation, and several products stabilized by heteroatom (N, O) coordination to iridium. Activation of large polycycles like terpyridine yielded stable, κ2 chelates that may be of value in research on organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). Finally, several congested (PCP)Ir dimers were synthesized by taking advantage of the remarkable stability of the products from cyclometalation to the (PCP)Ir complex.Ph.     Characella luna sp. nov. (Fig. 1A–I; Table 1) Holotype: UFPEPOR 2150, Bacia Potiguar (04° 44.8945' S, 36° 25.4571' W), Rio Grande do Norte State, Brazil, depth 108 m, trawl, Box 37, col. PetrobraS, (23.V.2011). Description of preserved specimen (Fig. 1A). Flattened fragment of 1–3 cm thick and 12 cm length. Surface iS irregular and Strongly hiSpid. ConSiStency compreSSable to hard. OSculeS not viSible. Colour in life iS unknown and purple in ethanol. The Specimen waS collected in the Same drag aS Aiolochroia crassa (Hyatt, 1875) and Stored in the Same container. It iS poSSible that the A. crassa pigmentS diScoloured the Characella Specimen. Skeleton: (Fig. 1B).     Post-war British working-class fiction with special reference to the novels of John Braine, Alan Sillitoe, Stan Barstow, David Storey and Barry Hines

    This study is about British working-class fiction in the post-war period. It covers various authors such as Robert Tressell, George Orwell, Walter Greenwood, Lewis Grassic Gibbon and DH Lawrence from the early twentieth century; writers traditionally classified as 'Angry Young Men' like John Osborne, Arnold Wesker, Shelagh Delaney, John Wain and Kingsley Amis; and working-class novelists like John Braine, Stan Barstow, David Storey, Alan Sillitoe and Barry Hines from the 1950s and 1960s. Some of the main issues dealt with in the course of this study are language, form, community, self/identity/autobiography, sexuality and relationship with bourgeois art. The major argument centres on two questions: representation of working-class life, and the relationship between working-class literary tradition and dominant ideologies. We will be arguing that while working-class fiction succeeded in challenging and rupturing bourgeois literary tradition, on the level of language and linguistic medium of expression for example, it utterly failed to break away from dominant, bourgeois modes of literary production in relation to form, for instance. Our argument is situated within Marxist approaches to literature, a political and aesthetic position from which we attempt an analysis and an evaluation of this working-class literary tradition. These critical approaches provide us also with the theoretical tool to define the political perspective of this tradition, and to judge whether it was confined to a descriptive mode of representation or located in a radical, political outlook

    Quantum steering ellipsoids and quantum obesity in critical systems

    Quantum obesity (QO) is new function used to quantify quantum correlations beyond entanglement, which also works as a witness for entanglement. Thanks to its analyticity for arbitrary state of bipartite systems, it represents an advantage with respect to other quantum correlations, like quantum discord for example. In this work we show that QO is a fundamental quantity to observe signature of quantum phase transitions. We also describe a mechanism based on local filtering operations able to intensify the critical behavior of the QO near to the transition point. To this end, we introduce a theorem stating how QO changes under local quantum operations and classical communications. This work opens perspective for the characterization of new phenomena in quantum critical systems through the analytically computable pairwise QO.Comment: 8 pages and 3 figures. Comments are welcom
