Sandra Rodriguez Oral History Interview
Oral history interview with Sandra Rodriguez, a native of Tampa, Florida. Rodriguez was born in 1943 and grew up in North Tampa, in what was then a predominantly white community of Florida Crackers (white people of non-Hispanic ancestry). In 1959, at the age of fifteen, she married Luciano Rodriguez, a Spanish/Cuban American. They had to elope in Georgia because her parents were opposed to the interracial marriage. Rodriguez did not find the transition to a Hispanic family difficult, though not speaking Spanish sometimes made her feel isolated. She never experienced any problems because she was married to a Hispanic man, and several of their friends and family members were also in interethnic relationships. Her husband, Luciano Rodriguez, was also interviewed for the Ybor City Oral History Project

Luciano Rodriguez Oral History Interview
An oral history interview with Tampa native Luciano Rodriguez. Rodriguez was born in Ybor City in 1938 and lived there with his family until he was ten. Rodriguez\u27s family then moved to West Tampa as his father was concerned about their neighborhood\u27s safety, and there was a strong Latin community in West Tampa. Rodriguez dropped out of school when he was sixteen, since he wanted to earn money and he thought he knew more than the teachers. When he was twenty, he and his wife, Sandra, eloped in Georgia because she was underage and her stepfather did not like him because he was Latin. The relationship between Rodriguez and his father-in-law was always strained, due to the father-in-law\u27s racism against Hispanics and African Americans, but Rodriguez and his wife never experienced any conflict from other people in the community. In this interview, Rodriguez also shares some experiences from his childhood in Ybor City. His wife, Sandra Rodriguez, was also interviewed for the Ybor City Oral History Project
