From CUNY to Columbia: A Comparative Analysis of Student Movements at Private and Public Institutions

    No full text
In this paper, I will argue that while student movements at Columbia were often able to achieve short-term institutional changes, in part due to the University’s flexibility to cede to their demands due to their status as a private institution, these wins often do not hold in the long term. While they may impact broader social conditions, the long term impact on political conditions is somewhat limited by the institution’s insular and elite nature. In contrast, student movements at CUNY, though often less able to affect immediate institutional reform due to financial constraints and bureaucratic resistance, had a more profound long-term influence on higher education public policy, particularly in the context of securing and improving access to higher education for marginalized communities. This analysis, which spans from the late 1960s to present day, will reveal how the specific characteristics of private and elite versus public and non-elite universities. Demographics, political engagement, institutional power, and resources all shape the efficacy of student activism and its broader implications for societal policy change

Revisiting the relativistic ejection event in XTE J1550-564 during the 1998 outburst

We revisit the discovery outburst of the X-ray transient XTE J1550−564 during which relativistic jets were observed in 1998 September, and review the radio images obtained with the Australian Long Baseline Array, and light curves obtained with the Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope and the Australia Telescope Compact Array. Based on Hi spectra, we constrain the source distance to between 3.3 and 4.9 kpc. The radio images, taken some 2 d apart, show the evolution of an ejection event. The apparent separation velocity of the two outermost ejecta is at least 1.3c and may be as large as 1.9c; when relativistic effects are taken into account, the inferred true velocity is ≥ 0.8c. The flux densities appear to peak simultaneously during the outburst, with a rather flat (although still optically thin) spectral index of −0.2

Observational evidence for AGN feedback in early-type galaxies

A major amendment in recent models of hierarchical galaxy formation is the inclusion of so-called active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback. The energy input from an active central massive black hole is invoked to suppress star formation in early-type galaxies at later epochs. A major problem is that this process is poorly understood, and compelling observational evidence for its mere existence is still missing. In search for signatures of AGN feedback, we have compiled a sample of 16 000 early-type galaxies in the redshift range 0.05 200 km s ) and roughly evenly distributed between star formation and AGN at intermediate and low (σ <100 km s ) masses. The objects with emission (∼20 per cent) are offset from the red sequence and form a well-defined pattern in the colour-mass diagram. Star-forming early-types inhabit the blue cloud, while early-types with AGN are located considerably closer to and almost on the red sequence. Star formation-AGN composites are found right between these two extremes. We further derive galaxy star formation histories using a novel method that combines multiwavelength photometry from near-ultraviolet (UV) to near-infrared (IR) and stellar absorption indices. We find that in those objects deviating from the red sequence star formation occurred several 100 Myr in the past involving 1-10 per cent of the total stellar mass. We identify an evolutionary sequence from star formation via nuclear activity to quiescence. This transition process lasts about 1 Gyr, and the peak AGN phase occurs roughly half a Gyr after the starburst. The most likely interpretation is that star formation is suppressed by nuclear activity in these objects before they settle on the red sequence. This is empirical evidence for the occurrence of AGN feedback in early-type galaxies at recent epochs. © 2007 The Authors. Journal compilation © 2007 RAS

By combining the UV tables of May 17th, 19th, 21st and 22nd, one obtains a point source flux of 1.62 ± 0.25 mJy, which amounts to a 6.5σ detection. Three individual tentative detections were made on May 19-22, and the source was only non-detected later with 3σ upper limits between 0.87 and 1.83 mJy. Observations at 232 GHz gave only upper limits. The lowest one from combined May 19 and 21 data is 4.5 mJy (3σ). No significant variation of the source during individual observing dates was seen in either frequency band. Comparing the May 17-22 detection with the later nondetections, we see a significant fading which is not well fitted with the F ∝ t −1.1±0.1 law found at higher frequencies. We exclude that the 86.2 GHz fluxes have been modulated significantly by interstellar scintillation. This indicates that the millimetre characteristics of GRB 970508 provide a new aspect of the intrinsic development of the source

Edition de la chanson de geste AIOL ([Edition du manuscrit unique BNF fr. 25516])

    No full text
Dating back to the second half of the 12th century, the epic poem of Aiol has been handed down to us through a single manuscript (Paris, BNF fr. 25516). With the objective of forming an artificial Cycle de Saint Gille, the chanson of the adventures of the young Aiol was transcribed in the same manuscript with the chanson of Elie de Saint-Gille. Except for the prologue (consisting of alexandrines), the text is composed of two more or less equal parts, the first containing essentially decasyllabic lines (with the caesura after the 6th syllable), the second alexandrines. In the first part of the poem, Aiol s father, Elie, has pacified the kingdom of France, but nevertheless been sent into exile. The man responsible for this act is none other than Elie s own brother-in-law (and Charlemagne s son), the Emperor Louis, who has succumbed to the advice of the traitorous Macaire. Thanks to the heroic deeds of Aiol, Elie s former dignity at the royal court of France will eventually be restored and the traitor Macaire will be thrown into prison. However, before achieving these feats in the first part of the poem, Aiol abducts Mirabel, the daughter of a potential foe of Louis, the Saracen king of Pampelune, Mibrien. In the second part of the poem, Macaire, who has escaped from Louis jail, captures Aiol and Mirabel in the midst of their wedding festivities. Subsequently, during the young couple s lengthy imprisonment, Mirabel gives birth to twin brothers. From this time onwards, the text is composed of a succession of more romantic elements, such as secret imprisonment(s), separations, incursions into southern and western countries, struggles against pagans and recognitions. And these in turn lead to a last battle near Pampelune, the elimination of Macaire (who is quartered) and the satisfying submission of Mibrien. Beyond providing information about the manuscript and the two 19th century editions, the present thèse proposes a study of the picard language of the scribe (the text being considered as the work of a remanieur and not of the first author), analyses of the literary features of the text, a summary of its content with a diagram exposing the relationships between the protagonists, and a map for geographical locations and itineraries. Critical notes, an exhaustive index of names and a glossary will complete this edition. The transcription attempts to maintain as close a reading as possible of/to the manuscript version. Corrections and additions are added thus only to facilitate direct reading of the text.VALENCIENNES-BU Sciences Lettres (596062101) / SudocSudocFranceF

Preliminary fuselage structural configuration of a flying-wing type airline

    No full text
The flying-wing is a type of configuration which is a tailless airplane accommodating all of its parts within the outline of a single airfoil. Theoretically, it has the most aerodynamic efficiency. The fuel consumption can be more efficient than the existed conventional airliner. It seems that this configuration can achieve the above mentioned requirements. According to these outstanding advantages, many aircraft companies did a great deal of projects on the flying-wing concept. However, the application was only for sport and military use; for airliner, none of them entered production. FW-11 is a flying-wing configuration airliner which is a design cooperation between Cranfield University and Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC). Aiming the spatial economic and environmental needs, this 200-seat airliner would attract attention from airline companies for cost saving and environmental protection. Before start, this program is designated for a new generation commercial aircraft to compete with the existing same capability airliner, such as Airbus A320 and Boeing 767. As the first team of this program, the aim is to finish the conceptual design and prepare the relevant document for next two teams that will perform preliminary and detail design. As a member of FW-11 program and as part of the GDP, the author has been through the four conceptual design stages: engine manufacturers, aircraft family issues, structure design and the establishment of 3-D CAD model. The aim of IRP study is to focus on the initial fuselage design

Word after Word after Word by P. MacLachlan

MacLachlan, Patricia. Word after Word after Word. New York: Katherine Tegan Books, 2010. Print. Ms. Mirabel, a famous writer, starts visiting a grade four class regularly and has a profound impact on a group of five friends by encouraging them to write, even if it means breaking the rules that their teacher believes are essential (such as creating an outline).  Ms. Mirabel’s core message that writing “word after word after word” can change your life strikes a chord with the five friends and, as their daily discussions under a lilac tree suggest, there is a lot they would like to change.  Lucy’s mom has cancer, Evie wants desperately to find a new woman for her recently-separated dad, a new baby is entering May’s family, and Russell not only has to babysit his younger brother every day but also deal with the recent death of his dog.  In contrast, Henry discovers writing helps him not to change anything but to “save everything I have.” The last scene, an open-house highlighting the children’s writing brought a lump to my throat as the parents read their child’s inner-most feelings and realize how their actions as adults and parents have unexpected and powerful effects on their children. I have to admit, Ms. Mirabel annoyed me. She dresses flamboyantly to grab attention; she is sensitive, creative, and wise in a way no ordinary teacher could ever be; and she even encourages Russell’s annoying questions that make the real teacher sigh. Perhaps I am little sensitive about the stereotype of real teachers as boring, rule-bound, and uncreative. On another note, there is something about the kids that does not ring quite true; they come across more like how an adult might romanticize that time of life rather than what real grade four kids are like. To be fair, the real author (Patricia MacLachlan) notes she visits many classrooms and receives letters from young readers of her other books, so perhaps she has a different insight into the thoughts and emotions of that age group. In fact, as she tells us in the author’s notes at the end, this book was written to address the many questions she gets about the hows and whys of being a writer in a more entertaining way. Overall, this is an inspiring book about the joys and power of writing. Healthcare Decision-Making Guidance in Africa: A Scoping Review Protocol

    No full text
Objective: This scoping review aims to map the different actors, institutions, capacities, resources, and processes involved in the development of health guidance in Africa and understand the extent to which they influence health decisions on the continent. Introduction: Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG) development, adoption, contextualisation and use in Africa remain challenging due to a limited understanding of the landscape, including the capacity to develop and use CPGs. Healthcare providers, patients, policymakers, funders, programme managers, regulators, evidence synthesis establishments and the science communities, in general, invest considerable efforts in influencing or making decisions at various levels from individuals, institutions, communities, nationally and internationally. While they differ in their approaches, there is considerable overlap, and decisions made in isolation may lead to confusion and waste of resources. To the best of our knowledge, no existing study on this topic exists. Still, the G-I-N Africa community has previously presented a rapid landscape review at the Guideline International Network (G-I-N) Conference. Inclusion criteria: The inclusion criteria will include health actors directly involved in or influencing health decision-making in Africa or African countries. They will also include CPG developers (including adopters and contextualisers), Ministries of Health, and local and international organisations focusing on Health. CPG capacities in development and use will focus on those actively developing or adapting health guidelines for the African context, either based in or outside Africa. Methods: Using a comprehensive search strategy, we will search PubMed, GIN database, JBI database, and WHO database. We will also search African government websites (Ministry of Health and Public Health) for peer-reviewed and grey literature in English, French, and Spanish. A search strategy will be developed to guide the search. A search expert will initially do title screening, and then abstract and full-text screening will be done by two independent authors. Two independent authors will do data extraction, and any disagreements will be addressed through discussions and, where necessary, by a third author. Data analysis will be done narratively and, where necessary, in collaboration with expert biostatisticians. We will use JBI SUMARI for this scoping review.
