Small amplitude ion-acoustic waves in electron-ion dusty plasma: Landau damping effects of combined Kappa–Cairns distributed electrons
Korteweg–de Vries (KdV) equation with the influence of Landau damping of electrons is developed to explore the weakly nonlinear and weakly dispersive ion-acoustic waves in a non-collisional unmagnetized plasma system whose constituents are adiabatic warm ions, negative-charged immobile dust grains and combined Kappa–Cairns distributed electrons. It is found that the nonlinear coefficient of the KdV equation vanishes along different parametric curves in the parametric space. In this situation, a modified KdV equation with the Landau damping effect is obtained to demonstrate the nonlinear propagation of the ion-acoustic waves. By employing multiple time scale method, the solitary wave solutions of these equations are derived. The solitary wave’s amplitudes have been noticed to decay gradually over time
Ion-acoustic waves and stability analysis in magnetized dusty plasma with combined Kappa–Cairns-distributed electrons
Considering a combined Kappa–Cairns electron distribution, we have analytically explored the nonlinear dynamics of ion-acoustic solitary waves in a magnetized electron–ion–dusty plasma, encompassing both suprathermal and nonthermal aspects to provide a more realistic characterization. The Korteweg–de Vries–Zakharov–Kuznetsov (KdV–ZK) equation is developed by employing the reductive perturbation approach. The nonlinear coefficient of KdV–ZK equation disappears for certain parametric curves, resulting in modified KdV–ZK equation. The soliton solutions are derived for each case and the consequences of key physical parameters on soliton characteristics are numerically investigated. The small-k perturbation expansion approach is used to investigate the stability of solitary solutions. The numerical research on the impacts of the parameters associated with this system on the growth rate of instability predicts that the enhancements of the propagation angle and the ion gyro-frequency lead to the shrinkage of the maximum growth rate of instability. On the other hand, the enhancements of the suprathermal and nonthermal parameters associated with electron’s distribution lead to the shrinkage of the maximum growth rate of instability. Understanding wave propagation and stability in space and astrophysical dusty plasmas, such as the solar wind, magnetosheath, and wider heliospheric regions, may be improved by the present research
Low strain rate compressive failure mechanism of coarse grain alumina
The present work reports the dynamic compressive strength (sigma(c)) of a dense (similar to 95%) coarse grain (similar to 20 mu m) alumina measured at 30 degrees C as a function of strain rates ((epsilon) over dot) ranging from 10(-5) to 5 x 10(-1) s(-1). The results showed a unique 40% enhancement of (sigma(c)) with the increase in ((epsilon) over dot). Extensive post mortem examination of fracture fragments obtained from the compressive failure tests by FESEM, TEM and HRTEM confirmed the formation of micro-cracks, shear bands, nanoscale cleavages and dislocations whose recurrence had increased with strain rate. Both shear induced microplasticity and nanoscale cleavages as well as dislocations had occurred concurrently yet independently during compressive fracture of coarse grain alumina even at very low strain rates. Based on these evidences a new compressive failure mechanism of alumina was proposed. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. All rights reserved
