Comparison of three large-eddy simulations of shock-induced turbulent separation bubbles
Three different large-eddy simulation investigations
of the interaction between an impinging oblique shock
and a supersonic turbulent boundary layer are presented. All
simulations made use of the same inflow technique, specifically
aimed at avoiding possible low-frequency interferences
with the shock/boundary-layer interaction system. All simulations
were run on relatively wide computational domains
and integrated over times greater than twenty five times the
period of the most commonly reported low-frequency shock oscillation,
making comparisons at both time-averaged and
low-frequency-dynamic levels possible. The results confirm
previous experimental results which suggested a simple linear
relation between the interaction length and the obliqueshock
strength if scaled using the boundary-layer thickness
and wall-shear stress. All the tested cases show evidences
of significant low-frequency shock motions. At the wall,
energetic low-frequency pressure fluctuations are observed,
mainly in the initial part of interaction
Large-eddy simulation of low-frequency unsteadiness in a turbulent shock-induced separation bubble
The need for better understanding of the low-frequency unsteadiness observed in shock wave/turbulent boundary layer interactions has been driving research in this area for several decades. We present here a large-eddy simulation investigation of the interaction between an impinging oblique shock and a Mach 2.3 turbulent boundary layer. Contrary to past large-eddy simulation investigations on shock/turbulent boundary layer interactions, we have used an inflow technique which does not introduce any energetically significant low frequencies into the domain, hence avoiding possible interference with the shock/boundary layer interaction system. The large-eddy simulation has been run for much longer times than previous computational studies making a Fourier analysis of the low frequency possible. The broadband and energetic low-frequency component found in the interaction is in excellent agreement with the experimental findings. Furthermore, a linear stability analysis of the mean flow was performed and a stationary unstable global mode was found. The long-run large-eddy simulation data were analyzed and a phase change in the wall pressure fluctuations was related to the global-mode structure, leading to a possible driving mechanism for the observed low-frequency motions
Efficient viscosity and thermal conductivity formulation for scale-resolved hypersonic flow simulations
Direct numerical simulation of turbulent flow past a trailing edge and the associated noise generation
Direct numerical simulations (DNS) are conducted of turbulent flow passing an infinitely thin trailing edge (TE). The objective is to investigate the turbulent flow field in the vicinity of the TE and the associated broadband noise generation. To generate a turbulent boundary layer a short distance from the inflow boundary, high amplitude lifted streaks and disturbances that can be associated with coherent outer layer vortices are introduced at the inflow boundary. A rapid increase in skin friction and a decrease in boundary layer thickness and pressure fluctuations is observed at the trailing edge. It is demonstrated that the behaviour of the hydrodynamic field in the vicinity of the TE can be predicted with reasonable accuracy using triple deck theory if the eddy viscosity is accounted for. Point spectra of surface pressure difference are shown to vary considerably towards the trailing edge, with a significant reduction of amplitude occurring in the low frequency range.The acoustic pressure obtained from the DNS is compared with predictions from two- and three-dimensional acoustic analogies and the classical trailing edge theory of Amiet. For low frequencies, two dimensional theory succeeds in predicting the acoustic pressure in the far field with reasonable accuracy due to a significant spanwise coherence of the surface pressure difference and predominantly two dimensional sound radiation. For higher frequencies, however, the full three dimensional theory is required for an accurate prediction of the acoustic far field. DNS data are used to test some of the key assumptions invoked by Amiet for the derivation of the classical trailing edge theory. Even though most of the approximations are shown to be reasonable, they collectively lead to a deviation from the DNS results, in particular for higher frequencies. Moreover, because the three dimensional acoustic analogy does not provide significantly improved results, it is suggested that some of the discrepancies can be attributed to the approach of evaluating the far field sound using a Kirchhoff-type integration of the surface pressure difference
Nonlinear interaction model of subsonic jet noise
Noise generation in a subsonic round jet is studied by a simplified model, in which nonlinear interactions of spatially evolving instability modes lead to the radiation of sound. The spatial mode evolution is computed using linear parabolized stability equations. Nonlinear interactions are found on a mode-by-mode basis and the sound radiation characteristics are determined by solution of the Lilley–Goldstein equation. Since mode interactions are computed explicitly, it is possible to find their relative importance for sound radiation. The method is applied to a single stream jet for which experimental data are available. The model gives Strouhal numbers of 0.45 for the most amplified waves in the jet and 0.19 for the dominant sound radiation. While in near field axisymmetric and the first azimuthal modes are both important, far-field sound is predominantly axisymmetric. These results are in close correspondence with experiment, suggesting that the simplified model is capturing at least some of the important mechanisms of subsonic jet noise

Influence of boundary-layer disturbances on the instability of a roughness wake in a high-speed boundary layer
The excitation of instability modes in the wake generated behind a discrete roughness element in a boundary layer at Mach 6 is analysed through numerical simulations of the compressible Navier–Stokes equations. Recent experimental observations show that transition to turbulence in high-speed boundary layers during re-entry flight is dominated by wall roughness effects. Therefore, understanding the roughness-induced transition to turbulence in this flow regime is of primary importance. Our results show that a discrete roughness element with a height of about half the local boundary-layer thickness generates an unstable wake able to sustain the growth of a number of modes. The most unstable of these modes are a sinuous mode (mode SL) and two varicose modes (modes VL and VC). The varicose modes grow approximately 17% faster than the most unstable Mack mode and their growth persists over a longer streamwise distance, thereby leading to a notable acceleration of the laminar–turbulent transition process. Two main mechanisms are identified for the excitation of wake modes: the first is based on the interaction between the external disturbances and the reverse flow regions induced by the roughness element and the second is due to the interaction between the boundary-layer modes (first modes and Mack modes) and the non-parallel roughness wake. An important finding of the present study is that, while being less unstable, mode SL is the preferred instability for the first of the above excitation mechanisms, which drives the wake modes excitation in the absence of boundary-layer modes. Modes VL and VC are excited through the second mechanism and, hence, become important when first modes and Mack modes come into interaction with the roughness wake. The new mode VC presents similarities with the Mack mode instability, including the tuning between its most unstable wavelength and the local boundary-layer thickness, and it is believed to play a fundamental role in the roughness-induced transition of high-speed boundary layers. In contrast to the smooth-wall case, wall cooling is stabilising for all the roughness-wake modes
Turbulence structures and statistics of a supersonic turbulent boundary layer subjected to concave surface curvature
Supersonic turbulent flows at Mach 2.7 over concave surfaces for two different radii of curvature were investigated and compared with a flat plate turbulent boundary layer using direct numerical simulations. The streamwise velocity reduces in the outer part of the boundary layer due to compression, while it increases near the wall due to curvature, with a higher shape factor for the concave cases. The near-wall spanwise streak spacing reduces compared to the flat plate, with large-scale streaks and turbulence amplification also observed. Streamwise velocity iso-surfaces and streamlines show the generation of Görtler-like vortices, consistent with significant centrifugal effects. Abundant small vortices are shown to be associated with large baroclinic production of vorticity that is caused by the density and pressure gradients that are associated with concave compression. Profiles of turbulent kinetic energy and turbulent Mach number exhibit a characteristic two-layer structure in the concave boundary layer cases. In the outer layer, turbulence is greatly amplified, whereas a local balance exists in the inner layer. Turbulent energy budget analysis shows that both production and dissipation increase near the concave wall, whereas in the outer part of the boundary layer, the production is increased and ultimately balanced by convection and turbulent transport.</p
Connecting transonic buffet with incompressible low-frequency oscillations on aerofoils
Self-sustained, low-frequency, coherent flow unsteadiness over rigid, stationary aerofoils in the transonic regime is referred to as transonic buffet. This study examines the role of shock waves in sustaining this transonic phenomenon and its relation to low-frequency oscillations that occur in flow over aerofoils in the incompressible regime (Zaman et al., 1989, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 202, pp. 403–442). This is investigated by performing large-eddy simulations of the flow over a NACA0012 profile for a wide range of flow conditions under free-transition conditions.
