Techno-economic analysis of a rapid phenotyping rover

    No full text
This study considers how a new agricultural robot that measures the physical traits of plants to identify high yielding crop varieties would fit in the current agricultural market by assessing historical crop production, similar technology currently available, and stakeholders, and develops a ten-year forecast of yields. The research investigates the socio-technical aspects of a rapid phenotyping rover, TERRA-MEPP (Transportation Energy Resource from Renewable Agriculture– Mobile Energy-crop Phenotyping Platform), that is not currently in the market place. Yield forecasting for a target crop, energy sorghum, was performed based on a 6 percent estimated yield gain. The value modeling developed for this study considers the total cost of ownership for TERRA-MEPP, the number of rovers needed by the breeder, the adoption rate of a new seed variety, and the fraction of the profits that the seed company receives. These variables are used in conjunction with the United States Department of Agriculture's sorghum production projections to model the monetary value of TERRA-MEPP over the next ten years. The value modeling in this study indicates that TERRA-MEPP will offer a large return on investment. A TERRA-MEPP rover will cost 20,000orless,withthetotaloperatingcostestimatedatabout20,000 or less, with the total operating cost estimated at about 13,000 per year, and a return on investment of about $38.4 million over ten years. The yield forecasting and socio-technical analysis in this study will be of interest to breeders and farmers. The potential yield gains that may be realized with TERRA-MEPP would provide additional biofuel and food. Developing new methods to increase crop yields is a critical mission this century, as the global community faces rapidly growing population and limited arable land, with uncertain changes in climate.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'Closed Access', the embargo will last until 2018-08-01The student, Caylee Mercado, accepted the attached license on 2016-07-14 at 17:52.The student, Caylee Mercado, submitted this Thesis for approval on 2016-07-14 at 18:10.This Thesis was approved for publication on 2016-07-19 at 15:15.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #9950 on 2016-11-10 at 12:20:49Made available in DSpace on 2016-11-10T18:27:53Z (GMT). Character Development and the Fear of Failure: Finding Huldey in Jen Silverman\u27s The Moors

    No full text
This paper examines my process of developing the character of Huldey in Jen Silverman\u27s play The Moors, directed by Madison Smith. I discuss the steps I took, the techniques I studied, the challenges I met, and how I faced and fought the fear of failure. In this production, I also studied characters from a few films suggested by our director for inspiration. This paper also includes background information on the playwright, their inspirations for The Moors, including Charlotte Brontë’s letters, and historical information about the place and period in which it is set. I lay out my experience throughout the production process beginning with play selection through the run of the show. This includes rehearsal journals, my “Huldey diary”, a scored script, feedback from audience members, and self-reflection

Design-Based Learning for the Elementary School Classroom

    No full text
As part of a two-year collaboration with over 100 students in grade 4-7 classrooms at Kenneth Gordon Maplewood School (KGMS), this thesis project introduced design-based learning as a new pedagogic approach for supporting children with learning differences. Design-based learning is the integration of design into classrooms as a means to support the learning of other subjects, skills and knowledge. It considers design as an approach to teaching and learning, not as its own subject of study. There is growing recognition that our current educational methods and approaches need to equip children with important skills including critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and communication. The BC Ministry of Education is currently in the process of transforming the curriculum to emphasize the development of these skills as core competencies (BC Ministry of Education, 2015, p.8). The use of design as an approach to fostering these skills is gaining momentum in education discussions across North America. However, despite the growth of knowledge and research in the area of education reform, design continues to evade integration in mainstream K12 education due to a lack of available resources and training for teachers. This document outlines the process of developing such materials. Through observations, conversations and the results of a pre- and post-design assessment the classroom teachers at KGMS saw profound benefits to the use of design as an approach to learning. To facilitate this approach, resource materials were developed to support teachers and a design coaching model was introduced as a way to provide ongoing, sustained professional development for teachers in the area of design-based learning.PedagogyCreativityTeachin

Intergenerational Aid in the 21st Century

    No full text
As digital immigrants of the 21st century, the current elderly always seem to have difficulty catching up with today's technologies. When day-to-day services like banking, healthcare, travel, etc., become entirely digitized without giving seniors the required time, education, or support to get on board, it gradually chips at their independence, dignity, and agency. To keep afloat in this rapidly digitizing world, most seniors find themselves relying on assistance from the people around them, such as younger family members, neighbors, friends, and community volunteers. This research explores the various facets and multitudes of digital support that younger persons commonly provide seniors. What factors influence this intergenerational digital support between seniors and younger generations? What is the role of technology and its design in this context? Through qualitative interviews and participatory workshops, this thesis delves into the perspectives and lived experiences of various stakeholders like seniors, younger generations, community volunteers, tech coaches, etc. The research is also fundamentally informed by my experience as a regular volunteer at the West End Seniors' Network, an NGO offering social and community support for seniors in Vancouver. After a thorough thematic analysis of the data gathered, the paper derives key insights about intergenerational digital support under the following themes - (1) A Generational Divide, (2) The 'Why,' (3) The 'How,' (4) Benefits, and (5) Barriers. With these insights, the research attempts to situate the role of intergenerational aid in the broader picture of digital inclusivity for seniors. Intergenerational support is only a facet of this wicked problem; other stakeholders like family, community, government, private companies, etc., also share responsibility in keeping seniors apace with the digital world. This research is then applied to cohesively map out potential best practices for multiple stakeholders to improve digital literacy for seniors. However, while this is a more significant systemic change proposed for the long run, we could now take small steps and solutions to contribute towards the larger goal, like capitalizing on the benefits of this already widespread intergenerational digital support. In light of this, a mobile application is designed and prototyped to facilitate digital aid between seniors and younger persons with ease, efficiency, and warmth.User interface designGerontechnologyWarm technologyWarm expertsDesign for agingParticipatory researchInclusive designAccessible designUser experience desig

Climate driven variability in the demography and physiology of the Uinta ground squirrel

    No full text
2018 Summer.Includes bibliographical references.Climate change is impacting the phenology of many species, ultimately altering their fitness and population dynamics. Shifts in phenology have been documented across a variety of taxa and ecosystems, but few studies have considered the effects of pertinent season-specific climatic variables on phenology and fitness. Hibernators may be particularly susceptible to changes in climate since they have a relatively short active season in which to reproduce and gain enough mass to survive the following winter. To understand whether and how climatic changes may be affecting hibernator fitness, we analyzed historical (1964-1968) and contemporary (2014-2017) mark-recapture data taken from the same population of Uinta ground squirrels (UGS, Urocitellus armatus). Although survival of UGS has not changed significantly over time, annual survival seems to fluctuate strongly in response to climate and phenology. Population density also increased, suggesting resources are less limited today than they used to be. Cheatgrass is now dominating low-elevation UGS habitat and seems to provide a better food source than native plants did historically. Although the phenology of UGS has not changed significantly over time with a locally warming climate (3.22ºF over 50 years), season-specific climatic variables were important in determining over-winter survival rates. To understand the role that physiological processes play in shaping the life history of UGS in light of warming temperatures, we studied UGS life history trade-offs near the extremes of their elevation range (6200 ft. versus 8000 ft.) which offer contrasted micro-climatic conditions. Specifically, we quantified trade-offs between body mass dynamics and immune function in two populations of UGS that experience different phenologies and active season lengths. UGS at the high elevation had a shorter active season, largely driven by extended snow cover into spring. UGS at this elevation also weighed less at emergence from hibernation than UGS at the lower elevation. Despite this, UGS at the high elevation gained mass faster than UGS at the low elevation, entering estivation at a similar weight. This accelerated mass gain was associated with a decline in immune function at the higher elevation, but not at the lower elevation where UGS experience a much longer active season and are not food-limited. Juveniles generally gained mass faster than adults and yearlings, but did not demonstrate a decrease in immune function at either elevation, possibly because they do not have to bear the energetic burden of reproduction. Our results improve our understanding of how hibernators respond to climate change, and how these plastic responses lead to contrasted life history strategies. Our results have implications for the conservation of this species and similar ones that are sensitive and responsive to even small changes in climate

The semantics and pragmatics of English evidential expressions : the expression of evidentiality in police interviews

    No full text
The goal of this dissertation is to examine how English speakers express their evidence in the context of police interviews. I show that speakers use discourse markers, in particular, actually, apparently and supposedly, to explain their evidence in a criminal investigation. The data for this research was collected exclusively from transcripts of police interviews of lay witnesses in the investigation into the disappearance and murder of Caylee Anthony that occurred in Orange County, Florida, between 2008 and 2011. I show that actually marks evidence strength and is felicitous where the speaker has the ‘best’ evidence for their proposition. Actually’s evidential contribution largely parallels the best possible grounds evidential -mi in Cuzco Quechua, and contrasts with that observed for English must. Apparently marks that the speaker’s evidence for the proposition is indirect and supposedly marks that the speaker has reported evidence for the proposition and that they distrust the report. In addition to what evidentials mean, this dissertation considers what speakers use evidentials to do. I show that speakers use evidentials to negotiate the common ground (cg) of discourse. While a bare assertion proposes its propositional content for inclusion in the cg, speakers use actually-assertions both to propose the propositional content for inclusion and to advocate for its inclusion by marking that the speaker has best evidence for that content. Because actually highlights the strength of the speaker’s evidence, it can be used to achieve delicate discourse actions like correcting, challenging and disagreeing. In questions, actually puts the addressee on notice that the information proposed in a bare assertion cannot be included in the cg without more information; actually-questions encourage the addressee to justify their evidence either by disclosing the source of their evidence or by expressly aligning as author and/or principal of that information. Speakers use apparently and supposedly to proffer information that may be relevant to the investigation but without proposing it for inclusion in the cg, because they are either agnostic about its reliability or know it to be untrustworthy.Arts, Faculty ofGraduat

Interoception and Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia in Gambling Disorder

    No full text
This is the author accepted manuscript. The final version is available from Wiley via the DOI in this recordGambling has long-standing links with excitement and physiological arousal, but prior research has not considered i) gamblers’ ability to detect internal physiological signals, or ii) markers of parasympathetic functioning. The present study measured interoception in individuals with gambling disorder, using selfreport measures and a heart beat counting task administered at rest. Resting state Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia (RSA), an index of heart rate variability, was measured as a proxy for parasympathetic control and emotional regulation capacity. In a case-control design, 50 individuals with gambling disorder were compared against 35 controls without gambling problems. Participants completed two self-report measures of bodily awareness and a behavioural test of heart beat counting. A resting state electrocardiogram (five minutes) was used to calculate RSA. There were no significant differences on the self-report or behavioral interoception probes. The group with gambling disorder displayed significantly reduced RSA, which at face value is consistent with reduced parasympathetic control. However, the group difference in RSA did not survive controlling for age and smoking status, as established predictors of heart rate variability. Our findings do not support any changes in interoceptive processing in people with gambling disorder, at least under resting conditions. Our observation that group differences in RSA are partly explained by smoking behavior highlights the importance of controlling for nicotine use in future research characterizing physiological functioning and emotional regulation in disordered gambling.Centre for Gambling Research at UBCProvince of British Columbia governmentBritish Columbia Lottery CorporationNatural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (Canada
