A Multi-Class Lane-Changing Advisory System for Freeway Merging Sections Using Cooperative ITS
Cooperative intelligent transportation systems (C-ITS) support the exchange of information between vehicles and infrastructure (V2I or I2V). This paper presents an in-vehicle C-ITS application to improve traffic efficiency around a merging section. The application balances the distribution of traffic over the available lanes of a freeway, by issuing targeted lane-changing advice to a selection of vehicles. We add to existing research by embedding multiple vehicle classes in the lane-changing advisory framework. We use a multi-class multi-lane macroscopic traffic flow model to design a feedback-feedforward control law that is based on a linear quadratic regulator (LQR). The weights of the LQR controller are fine-tuned using a response surface method. The performance of the proposed system is evaluated using a microscopic traffic simulator. The results indicate that the multi-class lane-changing advisory system is able to suppress shockwaves in traffic flow and can significantly alleviate congestion. Besides bringing substantial travel time benefits around merging sections of up to nearly 21%, the system dramatically reduces the variance of travel time losses in the system. Empirical Analysis of Lane Changing Behaviour at a Freeway Weaving Section
This paper presents an empirical analysis on lane changing behaviour using a trajectory data set collected at a weaving section in Grenoble (France). A detailed literature review shows that a strong empirical understanding of the weaving mechanisms is still lacking. This paper is devoted to fill this gap by investigating the lane changing behaviour at a microscopic level. We distinguished lane changes from the main road and those towards the main road. We conducted a descriptive empirical analysis of the weaving lane changes examining the positions of the lane changes and the accepted gaps. Our results show that under heavy congested traffic conditions the weaving vehicles tend to change lane as soon as possible after the start of the weaving section. When the traffic conditions are fluid, the lane changing positions are more spread along the first part of the weaving section. The weaving vehicles coming from the main road tend to change lane earlier than the weaving vehicles coming from the auxiliary lane. As the weaving vehicles change lane at the beginning of the studied weaving section, our findings ask whether the length of the weaving section is a key variable to estimate its capacity. Our findings raise also some questions about the more relevant micro-simulation models to reproduce the operation of weaving sections.Transport and Plannin
Quantifying the number of lane changes in traffic: An empirical analysis
Lane changes are an important aspect of freeway flow. Most lane change models are microscopic, describing whether individual vehicles/drives will change lanes, and hence are calibrated microscopically. Macroscopic validation often is restricted to the distribution of vehicles across lanes. To the best of our knowledge, no systematic analysis has been made of the number of lane changes as function of the operational characteristics of the origin and target lane. This paper fills that gap, by analyzing the number of lane changes as function of several incentives. Based on data availability, two “simple” sites are selected, i.e. as close as possible to a straight continuous freeway. Statistically, we find that on the selected sites, drivers change lanes on average once per two kilometer driven. Furthermore, analyzing the number of lane changes (per kilometer per hour) as function of the density in the origin lane and in the target lane, we find, as expected, this increases with the density in the origin lane for a fixed density in the target lane. Surprisingly, it also increases with the density in the target lane for a fixed density in the origin lane. The underlying mechanism is therefore different than gap acceptance theory. The analyses presented in this paper can be used to qualitatively verify (microscopic and macroscopic) lane change models, and to propose better lane change models.Transport and PlanningCivil Engineering and Geoscience
Modeling the impact of lane-changing's anticipation on car-following behavior
Lane-changing (LC) in congested traffic has been identified as a trigger for the sudden deceleration behavior of the new follower in the target lane, leading to severe traffic disturbances. Thus, investigating the response of the new follower to an LC maneuver is an important research topic in the literature. To date, numerous efforts have been devoted to understanding the impact of the lane changer on the new follower after the insertion, while less attention has been given to this influence during the pre-insertion stage (anticipation). Therefore, this paper aims to establish a new car-following (CF) model to capture the new follower's driving behavior during anticipation. Specifically, we introduce an attention mechanism deviating from Newell's CF rules to quantify the impact of anticipation. Then, we apply a neural network with an attention layer to estimate the attention mechanism and incorporate it into the Newell CF model, which yields a new CF model, denoted as CF_Attention. Using real-world trajectory data, we design three experiments and select three representative CF models to validate the CF_Attention. The results indicate that the CF_Attention outperforms the other models in predicting the new follower's trajectory, which is not affected by the heterogeneous behavior of the new follower and the anticipation duration. Additionally, the CF_Attention is proven effective in capturing the speed-space relationship and the formation of oscillation. Finally, our transferability test suggests that the CF_Attention is promising for different locations and times without requiring retraining. The Value of Calibration and Validation of Probabilistic Discretionary Lane-Change Models
Lane changes are important in traffic flow operations. They cause differences in flow over lanes and they may determine the onset of congestion. Therefore, it is relevant to have a lane change model for which the predictive power is confirmed. This article calibrates and validates a probabilistic discretionary lane change model, both microscopically and macroscopically. This is done using traffic flow variables related to lane changing, which was possible due to a large data set where lane changes have been recorded. It is shown the model can be claimed calibrated with accurate parameter estimates using a maximum likelihood method following the current state of the practice. However, careful interpretation of the validation shows that the resulting model is not at all representing reality. It therefore is concluded that lane change models must be validated before they can be used, and the quality should be assessed by physically sound measures.Transport and PlanningCivil Engineering and Geoscience
