The modernist angel: Art at the Limits of the Human in D. H. Lawrence, H. D. and Mina Loy
PhDThe subject of this thesis is a figure that might provisionally be called the *modemist
angel'. Focusing on modernist literature, and more particularly on the work of D. H.
Lawrence, H. D. and Mina Loy, it aims to isolate from the many angels found in all periods
and all types of art a historically specific and intellectually coherent paradigm: an angel of
and for its modernist times. A figure of precisely this type could be said to exist in the
form of Walter Benjamin's 'angel of history'. Critics who address the question of the
modern angel in texts by Franz Kafka and Rainer Maria Rilke often do so in conjunction
with the problem posed by the angel of history. Beginning with a chapter on Benjamin,
this thesis nevertheless follows a different trajectory. Over five chapters, it explores a
modernist landscape formed not only by Lawrence, H. D. and Loy, but also by European
and American writers such as A. R. Orage, Allen Upward, Ezra Pound, Wallace Stevens,
Havelock Ellis, Edward Carpenter, Sigmund Freud and Friedrich Nietzsche. Although the
angel that emerges from this investigation might, in some respects, be said to anticipate
Benjamin's later version, this figure is also very different, standing for a project that is
distinctively, and recognisably, modernist in nature. He/she (the sex of the modernist
angel is often open to question) represents an attempt to reconcile the divine
responsibilities of the artist with the material and gendered conditions of being,
specifically of being human, in the modem world. This thesis looks again at the clash of
intellectual paradigms in the early-twentieth century - notably, the confrontation of the
Romantic view of art as a superhuman or sacred undertaking with the psychoanalytical or
evolutionary idea that all human endeavour is underpinned by sub-human motives - and
suggests the angel as a new and instructive figure through which to think the perilous
limits between the human and the divine in modernist literature
Fuchsia pink dress with appliqued flowers
Dress of light pink-tan and fuchsia pink silk. Bodice is sheer, double-faced, light pink-tan silk appliqued with fuchsia pink silk flowers in multiple sizes, each with a small pink seed bead center, some with fuchsia pink leaves. Sleeveless with square neckline, front and back panels are connected by short spaghetti straps. Floor-length trumpet skirt of fuchsia pink silk, pleated at front sides of the waist to create shallow pockets, with a crinoline band at the hem. Center back closure with invisible zipper and hook-and-eye at the waist. Lining of fuchsia pink silk.

Las "Cantigas" de Sancho Sanchez, clérigo
Italian apographs B and V collect, under the rubric Sancho Sanchez clérigo, five cantigas de amigo and a cantiga de amor attributed to this author. The cantigas in this little profane lyric songbook, which closes the well-known compilação de clérigos (Oliveira 1994) preserved in B and V, were never released together. The aim of this paper is to establish the critical text of these six compositions, bearing in mind the written evidences preserved in the aforementioned song-books and, with them, the partial previous editions written by different authors and critics. This critical edition is part of a larger research about this troubadour, initiated by the author in January 2012 on the Arquivo Galicia Medieval of the CRPIH.Los apógrafos italianos B y V recogen, bajo la rúbrica Sancho Sanchez clérigo, cinco cantigas de amigo y una cantiga de amor atribuidas a este autor.
Extra-nuclear signaling of ERalpha to the actin cytoskeleton in the central nervous system.
Cell morphology is controlled by a complex and redundant array of intracellular signaling pathways devoted to the regulation of the actin cytoskeleton and of its relationship with the cell membrane and the extracellular matrix. Sex steroids are effective regulators of cell morphology and tissue organization, and recent evidence indicates that this is obtained through the regulation of the cytoskeleton. Intriguingly, many of these regulatory actions related to cell morphology are achieved through rapid, non-classical signaling of sex steroid receptors to kinase cascades, independently from nuclear alteration of gene expression or protein synthesis. The identification of the mechanistic basis for these rapid actions on cell cytoskeleton has special relevance for the characterization of the effects of sex steroids in physiological conditions, such as their role in the control of brain cell remodeling. Brain cell morphology is controlled by estrogens that regulate the development of neuron/neuron interconnections and dendritic spine density. This is thought to be critical for gender-specific differences in brain function and dysfunction. The recent advancements in the characterization of the molecular basis of the extra-nuclear signaling of estrogen helps to understand the role of estrogen in the brain, and may in the future turn out to be of relevance for clinical purposes. This review highlights the regulatory effects on the cytoskeleton and cell morphology of estrogens as well as the recent advances in the characterization of these mechanisms, providing insights and working hypotheses on possible clinical applications for the modulation of these pathways in the central nervous system
Acoustic energy isotherms: An emergent approach for textural characterization of activated carbons
Acoustic Emission Analysis (AEA) for textural characterization of granular activated carbons (GACs) is an interesting alternative for assessing the GAC volume of pores in a rapid, sensitive and reliable way. Correlations between AEA and conventional methods have demonstrated its potentialities for textural characterization of high-porosity materials. In this study, commercial GACs with different porous characteristics were compared and correlated by applying volumetric gas sorption (N-2 at 77 K, CO2 at 273 K), Hg porosimetry and AEA. The energy, amplitude and power of the acoustic signal produced during GAC immersion in water are used as parameters to correlate with textural characteristics of the carbons. The found relationship between conventional porosity assessment techniques and acoustic parameters demonstrated the potentialities of the acoustic method as complementary technique of exploring textural properties of high-porosity materials. The authors would like to thank VLIR-UOS (Flemish Interuniversity Council for University Development Cooperation) project between Belgium and Cuba for providing funding and granting the support of the current and future studies.Yperman, J (reprint author), Hasselt Univ, Res Grp Appl & Analyt Chem, Agoralaan Bldg D, B-3590 Diepenbeek, Belgium.

Francisco Madero, General Lucio Blanco, and Juan Sanchez Azcona, in a camp at Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico, in 1911. The photograph is estimated as being taken during or after the months of April and May of that year, as the tricolor cockades came into use in the camp during that time period.
