Carte de visite of Captain Samuel Ross

    No full text
The carte de visite was a type of small photograph mounted on a thick paper card, usually the size of a calling card, making it easily tradeable among friends and visitors. It was popular through the 1860's, after which it was supplanted by the larger cabinet card. Samuel Ross (? ~ 7/15/1894) was commissioned as 1st Lieutenant of Co. K, 3rd New Jersey Militia on April 27, 1861, and mustered out on July 31st, 1861. He was commissioned as Captain of Co. I, 14th regiment, N.J.V. on Aug 19, 1862 for a period 3 years, but resigned on January 28, 1863. He is buried in Elmwood Cemetery
