One Size Doesn't Fit All: Tailoring Discovery through User Testing

    No full text
Implementing a web-scale discovery service can be a complex and challenging task, but the process doesn’t simply end once your service goes live. In order to ensure that your new service is meeting the needs of its users, your implementation strategy should include a plan for iterative user testing. Different library users have different needs, making it nearly impossible for any discovery product to offer a one-size-fits-all solution. Fortunately, vendors offer a variety of configuration and customization options to help libraries tailor the experience to the needs of their users. This chapter offers practical guidance on how to apply insights from user testing to the customization of your web-scale discovery tool. In particular, it describes the results of collaborative user study conducted by Rutgers University and EBSCO User Research and offers an instructive model for how libraries and vendors can work together to improve products and develop solutions that become part of future web-scale discovery offerings

Modeling CO₂ particle releases in the deep ocean

Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Civil and Environmental Engineering, 2002.Includes bibliographical references (p. 93-97).This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections. This work investigates the environmental impacts of releasing solid CO₂ hydrate particles into the deep ocean for the purpose of CO₂ sequestration. Release of CO₂ in this form may be desirable as hydrate particles are negatively buoyant in seawater, and dissolution of CO₂ enhances this negative buoyancy via the solute density effect. Hence, the total plume thickness of a negatively buoyant CO₂ hydrate plume may exceed that of positively buoyant CO₂ release. This is seen as a potential advantage both in terms of dilution and sequestration depth. A brief description of the two-phase integral plume model used for stagnant plume modeling is given as well as some background in multi-phase plume physics. Physical and chemical properties relevant to CO₂ hydrates and the ocean environment are discussed, as well as a description of the applicable carbonate chemistry. The integral model used for plume modeling is calibrated based on available data, as is the mass transfer model. The impact of mean particle size particle size distribution, and mass injection rate on relevant integrated parameters is explored via numerical modeling. A brief comparison of the plume group effect for positive and negative buoyancy is presented as well. Three different CO₂ release scenarios, including a hydrate particle plume, a towed pipe release, and a manifold based liquid CO₂ release are compared in terms of their pH impact to the water column.by Eric J. Behavioral Genetics on the Brink: A Review of Eric Turkheimer’s Understanding the Nature-Nurture Debate

    No full text
The author reviews psychologist Eric Turkheimer’s 2024 book "Understanding the Nature-Nurture Debate." Turkheimer is known for taking a critical position within the field of behavioral genetics. While mentioning several important limitations, Turkheimer upholds the validity of the heritability concept, twin studies, and adoption studies. The author notes that “heritability” is a disputed concept, and briefly describes what he sees as the invalidating aspects of behavioral and psychiatric genetic twin and adoption studies. He then reviews Turkheimer’s analysis of DNA-based (molecular genetic) behavioral research methods such as linkage, candidate gene, genome-wide association (GWAS), and polygenetic score (PGS) studies. The first two methods ended in failure. Although GWAS and PGS researchers have claimed many “gene-behavior associations,” Turkheimer shows that, after decades of attempts, DNA-based research has failed to uncover genetic variants shown to cause human behavioral differences. Disagreements between Turkheimer and behavioral geneticist Robert Plomin are also examined. The author, though not Turkheimer, concludes that DNA-based research failure provides additional evidence that the critics of twin studies, adoption studies, and the heritability concept were right all along. As the behavioral genetic paradigm unravels, the social and behavioral sciences should begin working on a new environmentally focused post-behavioral genetics developmental paradigm

Joseph Conrad's Malay World: Reading History, Fiction, And Experience

    No full text
This thesis explores Joseph Conrad's first two novels, Almayer's Folly and An Outcast of the Islands, from the perspective of history. It broadly argues that in order to understand Conrad's Malay novels, it is necessary to get a sense of the author's own experiences and memories of living and working in the Malay Archipelago in the late nineteenth century. Read against the background of Conrad's own experiences, the novels reveal as much about the author as it does about the history of the people and the place he writes about. Through several readings that trace the connections between history, fiction, and experience, I argue that it was Conrad's experiences in the Malay Archipelago that impelled the writing of his Malay world in the English language.   ii

J.C. Bach's London keyboard sonatas : style and context

    J. C. Bach's keyboard works include several sets of accompanied sonatas, a genre that enjoyed a wide popularity during the Classical era, but never found its way into the concert repertoire. The accompanied sonata was a genre meant for domestic performance; the solo keyboard sonata, on the other hand, was adopted in due course by concert audiences. J. C. Bach composed works within both genres during most of his productive years, and his output constitutes a corpus of remarkable consistency. J. C. Bach's removal to London in 1762 coincided with his clear adoption of a galant style, marked by the Italianate influence, and the abandonment of most Baroque traits. The British milieu provided additional factors: the rise of the pianoforte, a thriving music-publishing market, and a great interest in domestic music making among the affluent classes. These factors marked J. C. Bach's output at various levels. Keyboard works had to conform to the proficiency of the amateur performer, a fact reflected in the accompanied output mostly. The number of movements, their length, and the inclusion of particular technical devices are readily observable differences between the two genres. The most remarkable distinction lies perhaps in the preference for binary sonata format in the accompanied. sonatas from the mid 1760s to the 1770s, in spite of a later tendency for tripartite designs in both genres. J. C. Bach's lifelong preference for motivic phrase structure conditioned his keyboard production and partly explains the gap in quality between some of his works and sonatas composed around the same time by Haydn and Mozart, who developed more effective means to connect the melodic material to higher structural units. J. C. Bach's influence, however, endured in Mozart's handling of melody, and his keyboard production constitutes, in spite of some flaws, a noteworthy example of elegance and craftsmanship

Faith, feeling and gender in the writing of Hartley, Wollstonecraft and Blake

This thesis examines David Hartley’s Observations on Man (1749) and elucidates how Hartley’s mechanical approach to mind, his conception of emotion, and the religious status he awards the body were newly relevant after 1791. In this way it identifies a ‘Hartlean culture’ within the Romantic period and seeks to explore how such an intellectual climate influenced the radical writers William Blake (1757–1827) and Mary Wollstonecraft (1759–1797). Blake and Wollstonecraft were acquainted with the famous bookseller Joseph Johnson, who republished Observations on Man in various forms and versions between 1775 and 1801. They also had an association with Johnson’s circle; the Hartlean concepts found throughout their work evidence Hartley’s latent popularity within intellectual culture, as well as the writers’ engagement with contemporary philosophical ideas. I propose that the renewed curiosity in Hartley during the 1790s reveals a specific religious and revolutionary culture wherein non-conformist views about Christianity and new ideas about the body, emotion and women flourished. Such a cultural moment renders Hartley a particularly important figure for debate since he integrated progressive values about equality and faith alongside advancing understanding of anatomy and mind. Hartley identified how God and happiness could be found physically within each person. He did this by combining a complex theory of vibrations and theory of association, where the body and mind functioned mechanically through a person’s feelings of pleasure and pain. These feelings manifested as physical vibrations and eventually led every person to desire goodness until finally, they can become ‘Godlike’ themselves. Hartley’s amalgamation of Christian and new theoretical concepts appealed to Blake and Wollstonecraft, and was much unlike the approach of Joseph Priestley who abridged Observations in 1775 to promote a wholly ‘scientific’ text. In this way, we can see resonances between Hartley, Blake and Wollstonecraft, even if they existed in different cultural contexts. In rethinking Blake and Wollstonecraft through Hartley, I offer new insights into their feminism. In particular I attend to how Hartlean culture enabled these writers to re-imagine gender and emotion: Wollstonecraft reinstates the female experience back into Hartlean concepts in order to promote women’s emotional potential and what she understands as the special power of the female-female bond. Blake responds to both Wollstonecraft and Hartley with his elevation of the feminine, one that envisions new potential for both sexes, emotionally and spiritually. In both cases, the writers share a fascination for the image of the female saviour, and they use terminology and concepts found in Hartley’s work to communicate their views. In being attentive to the shared vocabulary and ideas of these three writers’ works, this thesis highlights the importance of David Hartley and Hartlean culture for the field of Romantic Studies. It also illuminates Observations on Man as a vital contribution to the intellectual context of the 1790s
