This research is a deconstruction analysis which aims to reveal the images that have been deconstructed, and the method used to deconstruct those images in Terry Pratchett’s The Wee Free Men. This study is a qualitative research using content analysis method. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing.  The findings related to the first objective showing that there are two new images found in the novel along with their indicators. They are (1) the new image of flawed heroes with their unusual appearances, unfit attitudes, and peculiar concepts; (2) the new image of irregular witches who have common looks, are decent, and sensible. The second result is related to the methods used by the author to convey the new, deconstructed images. The author subverts the moral dichotomy to define the new types of heroes and witches. This research aims in revealing the logocentrism of modern people’s time concept which is exposed in The Time Keeper and to examine the methods used by the author to deconstruct the logocentrism. To answer the objectives of the research, the researcher used deconstruction literary criticism since the research is aimed to analyze a deconstruction of a logocentric idea which is planted in people’s mind. This study employed qualitative research. It used content analysis as the technique to analyze the object of the research. The source of this research is a novel entitled The Time Keeper by Mitch Albom. The data of the research were expressions which contain modern people’s logocentric ideas in conceptualizing time and the deconstruction of the logocentrism. The main instrument of the research was the researcher herself and the second instruments were the data sheets. In collecting the data, the researcher used reading and note-taking technique. Then, the researcher analyzed the data through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing process. In order to achieve trustworthiness, the researcher conducted a triangulation technique. The researcher finds two results related to the objectives of the research after analyzing the data. First, there are four logocentric ideas which are believed by modern people to be the truest ways to value time. Those are by being out of the present moment, by measuring time, by controlling time, and by having an endless time. Second, there are two methods used by the author to deconstruct the four logocentric ideas. They are by exposing irony and by the preaching of the mythical characters of the story. Both methods deconstruct each of the logocentrism by showing that those four rigid ideas which are believed to be the rightest way to make the time valuable leave them valueless instead. The new ideas are presented to enable people to have a balance way of thought especially in conceptualizing time since there is no single truth exists.            Keywords: deconstruction, logocentrism, modern people’s time concept, The Time Keepe

ECOLOGICAL CONSCIOUSNESS IN J. C. GEORGE’S THE TALKING EARTH: AN ECOCRITICAL STUDY

    No full text
This research is an ecocritical study that has two objectives; to reveal the kinds of ecological consciousness and to identify the ways of the ecological consciousness portrayed in J. C. George’s The Talking  Earth.  The  data  were  analyzed  based  on  ecocriticism theory,  ecological  consciousness  theory proposed by Bannan-Watts (2009) and by Chang (2002), and literary elements of children’s literature by Luken, Smith, Coffel (2013). This research was analyzed qualitatively by using content analysis method to examine the data. The main data of the research were in the form of sentences related to the kinds of ecological consciousness and the ways of the ecological consciousness portrayed in the novel. This research reveals that there are four kinds of ecological consciousness in The Talking Earth: (1) understanding the essence of nature, (2) showing concern to the condition of nature, (3) understanding the interdependence between living beings and nature, and (4) knowing the ways nature speak. In addition, there are four literary elements used by the writer to portray ecological consciousness in the novel. Those are character, setting, point of view, and theme. Ecological consciousness can be depicted through the character’s action, speech, and the author’s comment. Meanwhile, setting as symbol portrays the essence of forest as a home for many living beings. Moreover, omniscient point of view is used by the author to narrate the story and to give additional information. Lastly, explicit theme is revealed in the story to show many significant insights. All in all, this research discovers that ecological consciousness is strongly embodied in The Talking Earth into four kinds. The emergence of four literary elements in the novel supports the portrayal of ecological consciousness. As a result, The Talking Earth can be one of storybooks in fulfilling the need of children to grow their awareness toward their surroundings in order to know and understand the sustainability of the environment.  Keywords: Ecocriticism, ecological consciousness, literary elements of children’s literature, J.
