Utilization of Cell Phone for Research among Postgraduate Students in the University of Nigeria Nsukka: The Study
This study examined the utilization of cell phone for research among postgraduate students of the University of Nigerian Nsukka. In carrying out this study five research questions were posed. The study sample population comprised 231 postgraduate students of the university. The instrument used for data collection in this study was questionnaire. Research question were answered using frequency, bar chart and percentage to analyzing the data. Findings of the study reveal that majority of the postgraduate students in the University of Nigeria Nsukka made use of their mobile phones for research. The study also reveals that they made use of it all the time as shown in figure 4. Majority of the respondents agreed that cell phone helped them to solve /meet their information needs. Identifying the Relationship between Students Computer Hardware Skills in the Use of Electronic Information Resources in University Libraries in South-West, Nigeria
This study determined relationship between students’ computer hardware skills in the use of electronic information resources in University libraries in South-West, Nigeria. This study adopted correlation research design involving simple and multiple linear methods. The population of this study is 85,526. The sample for the study was 398. Proportionate sampling techniques were used to draw the sample. The findings revealed that there is a moderate positive and significant relationship between the students’ computer hardware skills and their use of EIR in university libraries. Also, there is a moderate positive and significant relationship between the students’ computer software skills and their use of EIR in university libraries in South- West, Nigeria; and there is a high and significant relationship among students’ computer hardware skills, computer software skill and their use of electronic information resources in the university library in South-West, Nigeria. Based on the above findings, the study recommended among others that undergraduate students should enhance their computer hardware skills since it is related with the use of electronic information resources in the universities. Research implications were also offered
Digital Literacy Skills Among Certified Librarians in Nigerian Libraries: Library Overview
Certified librarians in Nigeria libraries must be proactive and come on board to adopt a new intellectualizes digital literacy as a required ability that an individual must compulsorily possess. Three objectives such as types digital literacy skills, how it acquires and challenges faced by certified librarians. The study employed a social survey technique of research with a questionnaire as the research instrument. The study was carried out using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) application software. The findings of this study show that the majority of certified librarians have digital literacy skills that they sponsor themselves for digital literacy training, and that some acquired digital literacy skills through trial and error among others. Certified librarians in Nigerian libraries to redouble their efforts in ensuring that these future librarians and scholars are well-trained to be digitally up-to-date in order to save the profession's future and contribute as much as possible to Nigeria's digital technology revival
Prisoners and Their Information Needs: Prison Libraries Overview
The study aims at identifying the prisoner’s information needs. The descriptive survey design was adopted for this study. The census sampling technique was adopted for this study. Four objectives were set for the study and the interview was used to elicit information from respondents. As of the time of collecting data for this study, there were 936 prisoners in the four selected prisons. Findings showed that 95% were male while 5% were female. Findings also reveal that the information needs of prisoners covered health conditions, financial (99%), spiritual and moral (88%), life after prison/ information on legal issues (86%), family/friends (68%), literacy education (65%), skill acquisition (63%), right in prison (42%), prison rules (34%), and others information needs (26%). The majority of the respondents found libraries condition inadequate (85%). The study revealed that mosque/church were the popular ways of meeting information needs of the prisoners (75%). This is followed by family/friends (65%), physician/Nurses (56%), radio/television broad cast (23%), prison staff (22%), books/newspaper/magazine (20%), others (15%) and libraries (11%). Factors affecting information seeking behaviour of the prisoners include, problem of uncomfortable nature of the prison/ long delay before trial (97%), poor funding of the library and prison as a whole
(95%), building used for library is unfavourable (85%), among others.
The paper concludes that State and Federal Government should take into consideration the prisoners information needs amongst us, thereby provide adequate funding, current information and conducive reading room. Recommendations were put forward to enhance access to information by the prisoners
Inhibiting Factors of Selection and Acquisition of Grey Literature in Universities Libraries
The study investigated the inhibiting factors of selection and acquisition of grey literature in universities libraries. In carrying out this study four research questions were posed. The study employed a descriptive research design with a questionnaire as the research instrument. The study was carried out using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) application software. The findings of this study show that, grey literature contributed greatly to national development since they sometimes originate from scholars and grey literature are publications which served as important materials to users of academic libraries, among others. It also show that libraries select and acquire grey literature for academics research purposes, such as civil society or non-governmental organizations reports, academic works, research records, project, research reports, conference papers, and theses, dissertation and government documents, government reports, white papers, memoranda, conference proceedings, technical specifications, bibliographies and maps and evaluations, among others. The findings indicates that, academics libraries were facing numerous obstacles in selection and acquisition of grey literature such as grey literature is not accessible through the normal distribution channels, and grey literatures are hard to locate but which in most cases contain relevant and important data. Effect of insecurity on library services in selected universities in Nigeria
In this study, the researchers focus on the effect of insecurity on library services in selected universities in Nigeria. The objectives are to ascertain the causes of insecurity, identify the effects of insecurity and to determine the measures used to reduce the effects of insecurity on library services in the selected universities in Nigeria. The study adopted a quantitative methodology with a descriptive survey research design. Three (3) Universities were selected to represent the population for the study and a stratified random sampling technique was adopted to subdivide the universities into samples. The sample from each university was randomly selected made up of ninety (90) staff drawn. The instrument for the study is an Online Structured Questionnaire (OSQ). Some of the findings indicated that community crisis and feud among the people within the university community causes insecurity (X=3.91), Terrorism threat around the university community causes insecurity (X=3.86) and insurgency causes insecurity around the university community (X=3.63). In addition insecurity affect regular opening and closure time of library (X=3.67), insecurity affect regular user patronage to the library (X=3.41) and the universities should collaborate with government and other security agencies for assistance in reducing the effect of insecurity in the library (X=3.91), improve number of physical security personnel in the library to reduce the negative effect of insecurity (X=3.84) and finally increase number of electronic security system in the library to reduce the negative effect of insecurity (X=3.53)
Social Media Usage for Academic Purpose: A Systematic Literature Review 2010 to 2020.: social media use for academic purpose
The purpose of the study is to provide an up to date estimate global usage of social media for academic purpose between 2010 and 2020. The researcher applied systematic literature review, to explore global literatures on social media. 76 empirical studies relating to social media within 2010 to 2020, out of which 35 literatures that met identified minimum standards were utilized for this study. Proceedings of the findings were documented and discussed in thematic analysis. Findings revealed numerous specific SM tools such as Twitter, Facebook, Blogging, Orkut, Badoo, Sky Blog, Google, LinkedIn, Whatsapp, Skype, My Space, Yahoo messenger, zoom, Academic Community Blogs, online article, bookmaking wikis, lib website for academic and social activities, SkyDrive Google group used by students. The purpose of SM usage identified as a determinant factor to academics and the impacts of social media to learning. Study further identified challenges experienced that may affect the use of SM for academic purpose.
Research limitations: The article reports findings on SM usage were limited to only empirical research literatures focused on social media and students. The wider scope considered global literatures. However, resources like books and other information resources were not included in this study.
Practical implications: The study finding have practical implications in that they can be used as decision and policy model, or a developmental plan in education system to tackle pandemic or related issue in the future considering the 2020 pandemic experience on education system. Social Media use for education purpose can be redesigned into the model of learning in higher institutions.
Originality/ value: Use of social media in learning is gathering momentum among researchers globally. The purpose of SM use for academic purpose has not been explored in literature review approach. Finding of the study will, therefore, inform researchers, academics and institution decision makers on possibility of SM tools for academic purpose
A Survey of Digital Preservation Challenges in Nigerian Libraries: Librarians' Perspectives
This paper investigates digital preservation challenges in Nigerian libraries. In carrying out this study four research questions were posed. The study sample population comprised of 172 participants at the 2nd Conference of Certified Librarians from various libraries and institutions across Nigeria, organised by the Librarians’ Registration Council of Nigeria (LRCN) in Abuja on the 11th – 16th October, 2015. The outcome of the study revealed that digital preservation challenges persist despite the awareness of digital preservation strategies by librarians in Nigerian libraries. The findings revealed major challenges facing digital preservation, such as hardware and software obsolesces, lack of training, lack of backup and standards, lack of strategy policy, lack of funds, lukewarm attitude among the librarians and lack of legal right to preservation of content. Recommendations were made to protect and safeguard digital preservation challenges in the libraries, including the recommendation that the Nigerian Library Association (NLA), Librarians Registration Council of Nigeria (LRCN), University management and Library stakeholders should create a standard policy, provide needed skills for the librarians, lobby government for more funds and ensure that funds allocated to the libraries are properly utilised for effective digitization of library resources for future use.</jats:p
