Psychometric properties of two Islamic measures among young adults in Kuwait: the Sahin-Francis Scale of Attitude toward Islam and the Sahin Index of Islamic Moral Values
No full textGiven the importance of developing reliable and valid measures in the psychology of religion, and recent growing interest in developing empirical studies within an Islamic context, the present study discusses the properties of two specially designed instruments: the Sahin-Francis Scale of Attitude toward Islam and the Sahin Index of Islamic Moral Values. Data were provided by a sample of 1,199 students, selected from secondary schools in six educational districts in Kuwait. The sample comprised 603 males and 596 females; 812 were 17 years of age and 387 were 18 years of age. The data support the internal consistency reliability and construct validity of both instruments and commend them for further research

The Williams Scale of Attitude toward Paganism: development and application among British Pagans
No full textThis article builds on the tradition of attitudinal measures of religiosity established by Leslie Francis and colleagues with the Francis Scale of Attitude toward Christianity (and reflected in the Sahin-Francis Scale of Attitude toward Islam, the Katz-Francis Scale of Attitude toward Judaism, and the Santosh-Francis Scale of Attitude toward Hinduism) by introducing a new measure to assess the attitudinal disposition of Pagans. A battery of items was completed by 75 members of a Pagan Summer Camp. These items were reduced to produce a 21-item scale that measured aspects of Paganism concerned with: the God/Goddess, worshipping, prayer, and coven. The scale recorded an alpha coefficient of 0.93. Construct validity of the Williams Scale of Attitude toward Paganism was demonstrated by the clear association with measures of participation in private rituals

No full text“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Comparison of SARC-F and Ishii score in screening for sarcopenia in older adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus: which screening tool should we use?
No full textBackgroundSarcopenia is common in older adults, and type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM), highly prevalent in older adults, is a risk factor for sarcopenia. Early detection of sarcopenia is vital for the implementation of preventive and therapeutic measures.ObjectiveWe aimed to compare the SARC-F questionnaire and Ishii score screening methods for sarcopenia in patients with type 2 DM.MethodsThis cross-sectional study was conducted on 462 older adults with diabetes aged >= 60. Muscle mass and strength were assessed using the BIA device and handgrip dynamometer. Sarcopenia was defined in line with the European Sarcopenia Working Group 2 (EWGSOP2). The SARC-F questionnaire and Ishii score in screening for sarcopenia were compared.ResultsThe median age was 72 (67-76) for males and 68 (65-74) for females. The prevalence of sarcopenia based on the Ishii score, SARC-F, and EWGSOP2 was 28.4%, 40.9%, and 61.9%, respectively. The sensitivities of Ishii score and SARC-F in screening for sarcopenia were 84% and 47%, respectively. The Ishii score and SARCF specificities were 67% and 69%, respectively. PPV and NPV for the Ishii score were 79% and 45%, respectively. The PPV and NPV for the SARC-F were 71% and 55%, respectively. The AUC values of the Ishii score and SARC-F were 0.790 and 0.598, respectively.ConclusionThe Ishii score can be used in daily practice to screen for sarcopenia in older adults with type 2 DM
