THE SCIENCE OF SPEECH: DEVELOPING A COMPUTATIONAL MODEL FOR DIGITAL COMMUNICATION AND ITS RAMIFICATIONS FOR AUTHOR IDENTIFICATION IN CYBERSECURITY

    No full text
Great strides have been made in identifying an author on the web by analyzing keystroke input, even down to determining what operating system the person was writing on at the time. Likewise, studying the author’s semantics and syntax provides helpful clues as to the identity of the author and whether or not the author is attempting to commit a forgery of some kind. However, most parse trees focus on either the human, or the machine, side of the Human-Machine Interface (HMI). Incorporating both sides of the HMI better accounts for the unique digital signature every web author creates by analyzing stylometry and keystroke dynamics. This research could be instrumental not only in finding malicious actors on the web, but also in distinguishing humans from machines by the way they use words. Thus, combining typing times with part-of-speech (POS) tags demonstrates crucial differences in where authors are likely to spend the most time in sentence composition.Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited.CivilianSFShttp://archive.org/details/thescienceofspee109456489

Compressive Membrane Action in Immersed Tubes: A Finite Element Study

    No full text
Compressive membrane action is a phenomenon commonly found in reinforced concrete structures after significant cracking and deformation have taken place. In this thesis report, the potential benefit of CMA in immersed tubes subjected to fires is quantified through a finite element study. Furthermore, sensitivity studies are conducted in order to determine the boundary conditions necessary in immersed tubes to induce CMA.Civil Engineering | Structural Engineerin

    Novel topic authorship attribution

    No full text
The practice of using statistical models in predicting authorship (so-called author-attribution models) is long established. Several recent authorship attribution studies have indicated that topic-specific cues impact author-attribution machine learning models. The arrival of new topics should be anticipated rather than ignored in an author attribution evaluation methodology; a model that relies heavily on topic cues will be problematic in deployment settings where novel topics are common. In order to effectively deal with novel topics, we create author and topic vectors and attempt to project out the topic influences from each document. Although our experiments did not validate our assumptions, they do point out a possible problem with a common assumption in authorship attribution research.Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited.Outstanding Thesishttp://archive.org/details/noveltopicuthors10945576

The aim of the following article was to analyse the regulation relating to the safety usage of transport equipment and to indicate preventing solutions for any accidents at work. The author analysed Polish Regulations, EU directives as well as literature solutions concerning occupational health and safety. The result of the study was a concise presentation of solutions how to improve the work with the use of transport equipment, both from the employee point of view as well as from the employer perspective

“ISIS’ Dabiq communicative strategies, NATO and Europe. Who is learning from whom?”: Review of an article by Michelangelo Conoscenti

    No full text
This article is a review of the work of Michelangelo Conoscenti, professor of the Turin University (Italy), “ISIS’ Dabiq communicative strategies, NATO and Europe. Who is learning from whom?” The author of the review analyses M. Conoscenti’s work from the standpoint of the communicative strategies between such actors of international relations as NATO and ISIS. The review focuses on the nine sections of M. Conoscenti’s work: introduction; review of the literature; corpus description and names of the entity; the corpus linguistic analysis; a linguistic interpretation of Dabiq; deception, in Dabiq and in military doctrine; Dabiq as Armageddon? A Western isotopy for a Western narrative trajectory; the narrative against Europe; conclusion. The author of the review pays precise attention to the fact that M. Conoscenti, exploring the content of eleven issues of the journal, uses the techniques of corpus linguistics and the theory of meme introduced by Dawkins. M. Conoscenti writes that NATO uses narrative of fear and military discourse to establish its communication with the world. The review focuses on M. Conoscenti’s evidence in favor of the failure of NATO’s strategic communication in comparison with the advanced strategies of Dabiq

Assessment of types of damage and causes of human-wildlife conflict in Gera district, south western Ethiopia

    No full text
Human-wildlife conflict (HWC) exists in different forms all over the world and is experienced more in developing countries. The conflict between human and wildlife ranks among the main threats to biodiversity conservation and has become frequent and severe in different parts of Africa. In the author s’ previous study, five species of wildlife were identified as the main crop raiding species in Gera, southwestern Ethiopia. The current study was conducted to assess causes of HWC and types of damage in this area. Data were collected through semi- structured questionnaires, focus group discussion, direct observation and key informant interview. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze the socioeconomic profile of the respondents. One-way ANOVA and Chi-square test were used to analyze causes of HWC. The result showed that 50 and 22% of the respondent reported that the prevalence of HWC is manifested through crop damage and livestock predation, respectively. There was a significant difference between causes of HWC (F=4.2, P=0.000). In this study, habitat disturbance and increase in population of wildlife was the highest and least causes of HWC, respectively. HWC is increasing in both severity and frequency in the study area. Therefore, to minimize the conflict occurring in the whole scope of society in the proper selection of investment site (mainly modern coffee production in the area) is crucial. Furthermore, the wildlife authorities and local institutions are encouraged to address the needs of the local communities or to find the source of alternative livelihood to the societ
