    Genus Gigantidas Cosel & Marshall, 2003 Type species. Gigantidas gladius Cosel & Marshall, 2003. Remarks. This genus was erected by Cosel & Marshall (2003) to include only the type species, with a second species, G. horikoshii Hashimoto & Yamane, 2005, added shortly afterwards from vent sites off Japan. A molecular analysis of bathymodioline mussels by Thubaut et al. (2013) moved the “ Bathymodiolus ” childressi clade into Gigantidas Cosel & Marshall, 2003, substantially increasing the number of extant species ascribed to this genus.     Family Cardiidae Lamarck, 1809 <p> <b>Remarks.</b> This family is not well represented in the seep fossil record, with the only reliable report being of indeterminate cardiids from a “ <i>Calyptogena</i> Association ” in the Pliocene Nadachi Formation, central Japan (Amano & Kanno 1991). Hirayama (1973) also reported the occurrence of <i>Clinocardium asagaiense</i> (Makiyama 1934) and <i>Papyridea</i> cf. <i>nipponica</i> Yokoyama, 1924, from the middle Miocene Hiranita Formation, central Japan, which may be seep-related.</p>Published as part of <i>Saether, Kristian P., Jingeng, Sha, Little, Crispin T.     Gigantidas coseli Saether, Little, Campbell, Marshall, Collins & Alfaro, 2010 (Fig. 4) Gigantidas coseli Saether et al., 2010: 21; figs. 4B, C, 8–10, 17. Material. One specimen from Moonlight North (Y16/f0694), L4203 (holotype; Fig. 4), UOA. Remarks. Saether et al. (2010) originally described G. c o s e l i with unknown details of the anterior adductor scar. Further study of the holotype reveals that the anterior adductor scar is situated in the extreme anterior part of the shell, has a moderately strongly impressed anterior margin that closely follows the anterior margin of the shell, probably has a weaker posterior margin (seen weakly in one specimen, Fig. 4), and is rather narrow.     cf. Pulvinites sp. (Fig. 5 A, B) Material. Five specimens from Moonlight North (Y16/f0694), large shell fragments, two numbered, L4650 (Fig. 5 A), L4651 (Fig. 5 B), UOA. Description. Shell large (up to ca. 70 mm at widest diameter), composed of very thin plates, outline irregular; dimpled texture observed on many of the plates, some plates more or less smooth without dimpled texture, some with calcitic lamellae. Remarks. Specimens are numerous at only one site, found in dense and diverse assemblages with caryophylliid corals, mytilids and thyasirids. It cannot be confirmed that the specimens belong to Pulvinites Blainville, 1824, with such internal features common to all species of this genus [e.g. posterior adductor muscle scar, anterior pedobyssal retractor muscle scar, byssal foramen, posterior pedal retractor muscle scar and suture (Palmer 1984; Tëmkin 2006)] not evident on any of the specimens, nor do any have the distinctive ligamental area preserved. However, the general morphology of the shelly plates closely resembles the nature of those of P. exempla (Fig. 5 C: cf.     Family Limidae Rafinesque, 1815 Remarks. There are few records of limids in the fossil seep record, with only three named species in three genera (two from Japan, Lima Cuvier, 1798 and Limatula Wood, 1839, and one from Svalbard, Pseudolimea Arkell in Douglas & Arkell, 1932). Lima zushiensis Yokoyama, 1920, was reported by Hirayama (1973) from a tentative seep-related fauna in the middle Miocene Hiranita Formation, and Amano & Kanno (1991) reported Limatula cf. (Limatula) vladivostokensis (Scarlato, 1955) and another indeterminate species of Limatula from the Pliocene Nadachi Formation. Hryniewicz et al. (2014) recently reported Pseudolimea arctica (Zakharov, 1966) from the Berriasian (local Ryazanian) Slottsmøya Member.     Genus <i>Pratulum</i> Iredale, 1924 <p> Type species. <i>Cardium thetidis</i> Hedley, 1902</p> <p> <b>Remarks.</b> This genus has never been reported from modern New Zealand seeps or from fossil seep deposits globally. Traditionally, it has been regarded as a subgenus of <i>Nemocardium</i> Meek, 1876. However, Poorten (2013) recently reviewed <i>Nemocardium</i> and argued that <i>Pratulum</i> Iredale, 1924, should be elevated to genus level.     Subfamily Bathymodiolinae Kenk & Wilson, 1985 Remarks. Four new seep fossil mussel species have been formally described since this group was reviewed by Saether et al. (2010). Three have been assigned to the genus Bathymodiolus Kenk & Wilson, 1985. They are Bathymodiolus (s. l.) inouei Amano & Jenkins, 2011, from the early Oligocene Nuibetsu Formation, northern Japan, B. (s. l.) satsopensis Kiel & Amano, 2013, from the late Oligocene Lincoln Creek Formation, north-western USA, and B. (s. l.) aff. satsopensis Kiel & Amano, 2013 from the early Oligocene Makah Formation, north-western USA.     Subfamily Bathymodiolinae Kenk and Wilson, 1985 Discussion. Vent and seep mussels of the genera Bathymodiolus, Gigantidas and Tamu traditionally have been referred to a subfamily Bathymodiolinae Kenk and Wilson, 1985 (e.g. Cosel and Janssen 2008), although as indicated by Samadi et al. (2007), on molecular evidence the group is “robustly rooted within a monophyletic group that includes the species Modiolus modiolus...”, i.e. subfamily Modiolinae Keen, 1958. Thus, Bathymodiolinae would appear to be a grade of Modiolinae comprising several clades, each probably independently derived from small wood-associated ancestors (Distel 2000; Fujita et al. 2009). Re-evaluation of the higher classification of mytilids is not our intention, and we consider it appropriate and convenient to refer to these mussels as bathymodiolines.Published as part of Saether, Kristian P., Little, Crispin T.
