An abstract monadic semantics for value recursion

    No full text
This paper proposes an operational semantics for value recursion in the context of monadic metalanguages. Our technique for combining value recursion with computational effects works uniformly for all monads. The operational nature of our approach is related to the implementation of recursion in Scheme and its monadic version proposed by Friedman and Sabry, but it defines a different semantics and does not rely on assignments. When contrasted to the axiomatic approach proposed by Erkok and Launchbury, our semantics for the continuation monad invalidates one of the axioms, adding to the evidence that this axiom is problematic in the presence of continuations

Culture, Time and Publics in the Arab World: Media, Public Space and Temporality

    No full text
In this revealing new study, Tarik Sabry and Joe Khalil preside over an original new exploration of Arab culture. They employ subjects as varied as anthropology, media studies, philosophy, political economy and cultural studies to illuminate the relationship between culture, time and publics in an Arab context, whilst also laying the foundations for a much more nuanced picture of Arab society. The diverse themes and locations explored include communities at borders, in rural and urban locations, Syrian drama audiences, Egyptian, Saudi and Tunisian artists and activists and historical and contemporary Arab intellectuals. This fresh empirical research and interdisciplinary analysis illuminate intricate experiences that transcend local, national and religious boundaries and expose how Arab publics combine the media and technology to create a rich experience that shapes their collective imagination and social structure. Providing a grounded orientation to key debates on time and what can be defined as public in modern Arab cultures, Sabry and Khalil address teachers, students and those concerned about the delicate structures that underpin the upheavals of the modern Arab world

Interactive learning systems for higher education: Learning styles and students' attitude

    No full text
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University. This dissertation reports research concerning the adaptation of learning systems to students' different learning styles (LSs), particularly in relation to the analysis and planning of Interactive Learning Systems (ILSs). Given the primacy of Interactive Learning and its pedagogical implication on educational designs, the motivation for this research is better understanding of students' different learning preferences and perceptions of Computer Mediated Learning Interactions (CMLIs), as this may present some insights into what and how interactivity can be incorporated more purposefully and efficiently into learning systems designs. This research undertakes a review of the literature relating to LSs' theories, which have been used to explore how individual learners approach learning, as well as different Learning Interactions in relation to Interactive Learning Systems (ILSs). The work undertaken in this research makes its contribution to the field in that it represents one of the first explicit investigations of the relationship between students' LSs (Active-Reflective/Visual Verbal dimensions) and their attitude towards different CMLIs that constitute essential part of ILSs, in terms of use, perceptions and learning preferences, from the users' (learners) perspective rather than the teachers and/or designers of these systems. The research provides evidence to support the differing views of learners of different LSs as well as evidence of common attitudes towards certain CMLIs. However, it warns against and highlights some of the limitations of using the LSs in isolation and the importance of considering other factors and aspects of students' individual differences. A model is proposed to guide the planning and design of ILSs, and to raise the designers' and teachers' awareness of learners' differences and call upon them to take necessary steps to consider actual learners' LSs in the learning design. Implications of the findings in terms of interactivity design considerations are discussed; research limitations and recommendations for future work are made

Information systems for interactive learning: Design perspective

    No full text
This paper aims to present and discuss educational issues and relevant research to universities and colleges in the Arabian Gulf Region. This include cultural, students’ learning preferences and the use of information and communication technology. It particularly focuses on interactive learning through the consideration of learning styles. It explores the sequential-global learning styles profile of undergraduate students as part of a continuous research in Information Systems design with a particular focus on the design of Interactive Learning Systems (ILSs). A study to examine the learning style profile of undergraduate students in a cohort of Management Information Systems at a UAE university has been conducted, and a discussion and recommendations on how these findings can be reflected on the design of ILSs are provided

Intriguing diverse chemistry and unique molecular mechanisms: new medicines with diverse pharmacological activities from cephalopods ink

    No full text
The ink that cephalopods secrete to hide and frighten the enemies contains a treasury rich in bioactive diverse compounds like DOPA, melanin, melanin synthase, tyrosinase, angiotensin converting enzyme, catecholamines, oligopeptides, polyphenols, flavonoids, alkaloids, polysaccharides, fatty acids and minerals. These groups of the aforementioned compounds have promising unique in-vitro and in-vivo biological activities like antioxidant activity, anti-inflammatory, vasopressin, anti-Parkinson, anti-cancer, anticoagulant, antimicrobial, anti-retroviral, anti-ulcerogenic and immune boosting activities. Cephalopods ink can be offered in its raw state or after separation and purification of its chemical constituents for use as natural medicine to treat many diverse diseases

Cairo: Former Egyptian Vice President Aly Sabry pleads \u27not guilty\u27 at the opening of his trial, with 90 others, for high treason August 25. Charges stem from an alleged plot to overthrow President Anwar Sadat, and carry a maximum sentence of death or life imprisonment at hard labor. Trial was adjourned for ten days so that defense attorneys could have more time to read over the State\u27s case, a 10,000 page document.https://digitalcommons.chapman.edu/upi_arab_israeli_conflict/1067/thumbnail.jp

Digital Photogrammetry and Laser Scanning in Cultural Heritage Survey

A joint project between the Interdept. Research Center of the University of Padova (CIRGEO), a research group of Istituto Tecnico per la Ricerca Scientifica e Tecnologica (IRST) of Trento and the Visual Information Technology group (VIT) of the NRC Canada, in Ottawa, has been undertaken, with the main aim to create a set of 3D models of an historical building by means of photogrammetry and laser scanning-based surveying techniques. Beside the investigation of their geometric accuracy, a photorealistic representation suited for interactive navigation and manipulation in VR environment was a further objective of thie project. To this aim, the main room in the Aquila tower in Buonconsiglio castle (Trento, Italy) was choosen, as it featured a relative simple geometry along with artistically and historically very precious frescoed walls. In this paper a description of both surveying and modeling procedures adopted and results of a comparison test between employed techniques are presente

AN INDEX METHOD FOR SELECTING REPRESENTATIVE CITIES OF A TARGET MARKET

    No full text
An index was developed to rank U.S. metropolitan areas according to overall similarities in their socio-economic characteristics to the U.S. average. This index is given as a solution to matching a representative city or market area to a target market as well as matching a group of cities which are similar to each other. The index shows stability in ranking these cities with different consumption data for similar products and proves to be a promising approach whenever the researcher must find a group of cities which are similar to each other and to the target market.Research Methods/ Statistical Methods,
