    Feasibility of ex-situ recruitment and outplanting of Gongolaria nodicaulis (Fucales, Phaeophyceae) for restoration of warm temperate marine forests in Atlantic Morocco

    Brown algal forests provide many ecosystem services but are declining worldwide, prompting a growing number of conservation and restoration efforts. Recent attempts to recover Cystoseira forests are encouraging in the Mediterranean, but whether this is possible in more challenging Atlantic conditions has not yet been investigated. In this study, we assess the feasibility of cultivating Gongolaria nodicaulis by producing ex-situ recruits for reforestation on the Atlantic coast of Morocco. Embryos of G. nodicaulis were cultured on clay tiles for 26 days under controlled conditions without water motion, reaching an average length of 3mm before being outplanted on the intertidal zone. The transplants were monitored for six months. Recruits experienced high loss rates, approximately 47% of zygotes within 7 days in culture and 75% of outplanted seedlings within 10 days in the field. The latter might result from natural self-thinning (competition), but our observations suggested that it was also largely due to the weak attachment of recruits to the tiles resulting from cultivation under calm conditions. Six months after the transplants, the surviving individuals reached the size of wild adult algae (average length of 13.5cm), and some even became reproductive. Globally, survival rates, growth, physiological condition and fertility in this restoration pilot suggest that ex-situ recruitment and outplanting of G. nodicaulis is a promising approach to recover forests in Atlantic Morocc

    Seasonal patterns of growth, alginate content and block structure of the alien invader Sargassum muticum (Fucales, Ochrophyta) from the Atlantic coast of Morocco

    In the present study, alginate yield and composition were investigated during the seasonal life cycle of the alien brown alga Sargassum muticum harvested from the Atlantic coast of Morocco. Alginate yield ranged from 11.14% in winter to 25.62% in spring/early summer, coinciding with maximum vegetative growth. Monthly monitoring of the alginate block structure showed that the highest mannuronate (M)/guluronate (G) ratio was recorded during the maximum development of S. muticum, before sexual maturity and during resumption of vegetative growth, giving maximum flexibility to the alga. The unusually high molar monad fractions (FG) and dyad fractions (FGG) of guluronic acid in late summer/early autumn appeared to be related to stiffness of senescent thalli. Rheological characterisation showed that the alginate of S. muticum exhibited pseudoplastic behaviour, with the highest apparent viscosities measured in late summer/ early autumn when the G blocks dominated the alginate structure. This study suggests that S. muticum could be exploited as an alginophyte for commercial applications. The best harvest time is May-June, which corresponds to the highest alginate yield, maximum thallus growth, and largely completed sexual reproduction, ensuring sustainable exploitation of the species

    Similar epiphytic macrofauna inhabiting the introduced <I>Sargassum muticum</I> and native fucoids on the Atlantic coast of Morocco

    The diversity and structure of epiphytic macrofaunal assemblages on the introduced invasive brown macroalga Sargassum muticum and native fucoids (Bifurcaria bifurcata, Cystoseira humilis, Cystoseira tamariscifolia and Sargassum vulgare) were compared over a 1-year period in intertidal rockpools on the Atlantic coast of Morocco. In comparison with the epiphytic fauna associated to other macroalgae from European shores, we found that the associated epiphytic macrofauna was moderately diverse (H’&lt;3 bit) and was mainly dominated by gastropods and crustaceans. The most abundant taxa were the isopod Dynamene bidentata and the gastropods Steromphala umbilicalis and Steromphala pennanti. The epiphytic macrofauna community structure differed slightly between the invader and the natives along the year. There was significant temporal variation in the total number of individuals of epiphytic macrofauna per thallus dry weight for the associated epifauna with the highest abundance found on C. tamariscifolia in the spring. The composition of the epiphytic macrofauna on each macroalga species was fairly constant over time. Overall, our results demonstrated that the mobile epiphytic macrofauna on this rocky area showed low macroalgal specificity. They also revealed that the invader S. muticum supports similar epiphytic macrofaunal communities as the native brown macroalgae and provides an additional appropriate habitat for a generalist associated epiphytic macrofauna.</p

    Real-Time Fault Detection and Identification for MMC Using 1-D Convolutional Neural Networks

    Automated early detection and identification of switch faults are essential in high-voltage applications. Modular multilevel converter (MMC) is a new and promising topology for such applications. MMC is composed of many identical controlled voltage sources called modules or cells. Each cell may have one or more switches and a switch failure may occur in anyone of these cells. The steady-state normal and fault behavior of a cell voltage will also significantly vary according to the changes in the load current and the fault timing. This makes it a challenging problem to detect and identify such faults as soon as they occur. In this paper, we propose a real-time and highly accurate MMC circuit monitoring system for early fault detection and identification using adaptive one-dimensional convolutional neural networks. The proposed approach is directly applicable to the raw voltage and current data and thus eliminates the need for any feature extraction algorithm, resulting in a highly efficient and reliable system. Simulation results obtained using a four-cell, eight-switch MMC topology demonstrate that the proposed system has a high reliability to avoid any false alarm and achieves a detection probability of 0.989, and average identification probability of 0.997 in less than 100 ms. - 2018 IEEE.Manuscript received October 23, 2017; revised February 11, 2018 and March 27, 2018; accepted April 16, 2018.     AbstractThe impact of the wastewater input of Médiouna agglomeration (southeastern area of Casablanca) on the diatom flora and water quality of Oued Hassar stream (Morocco) was studied from July 1997 to August 1998. This wastewater effluent, which was highly loaded with ammonia, orthophosphates and organic matters, had disturbed the diatom assemblages structure and water quality of this stream.The study of the epilithic algal assemblages revealed the presence of 130 taxa of diatoms, 21 of which, according to the available literature, were recorded for the first time in the Moroccan inland waters. Almost all the latter taxa are mesohalobic or oligohalobic-indifferent. Nitzschia inconspicua Grun. was the most abundant species (47.7%) and grows particularly at the source of the stream. Navicula subminuscula Manguin, Nitzschia capitellata Hust. and Nitzschia desertorum Hust. have their dominance in the highly polluted zones, especially downstream the wastewater input

DISTRIBUTION. — Probably Europe (not recognized in Bretfeld 1999). REMARK Very rare in our samples. The literature about this species is confusing. It is listed in Bretfeld (1999), who follows Stach (1956), as a subspecies of Sminthurinus elegans, with Krausbauer, 1902 given as author. In fact, it was described by this last author as Sminthurus aureus var. signata in 1898, and briefly but clearly characterized by its color pattern. It is very characteristic and common in western Europe (Thibaud 2017), and fully deserves a specific status. Employing a sociolinguistic approach drawing from Bourdieu\u27s Language and Symbolic Power, the analysis delves into the intersection of religion, authority, and language, placing orality at the heart of their role within the narrative.
