Material light: exploring expressive materials
The control of material appearance has become richer than before, giving designers new expressive freedom. Designers need tools and techniques to handle this freedom when designing products. We present a simple but powerful technique to explore material expression in the conceptual phase of the design process. Colours and patterns are projected on foam and paper models to enable designers to quickly visualise and judge materials in context of the products shape.
Gesture-based Trafficator to Improve Driver to Traffic Communication
The way we communicate between vehicles has not much changed in the last hundred years. We still use very simple means such turn signals, horns and high beams. However, Today’s roads are crowded and these limited communication means lead to complicated traffic situation and accidents. An Industrial Designer’s Perspective on Future Makers
We present visions of products and roles of designers in the society of future making from industrial designers’ perspectives. Our visions are based on the analogy that product ecology will be like local farming for food consumption, where people purchase seeds of goods and grow them as they consume. We illustrate two cases in which users take a leading role in personalizing a product to their needs. The first case, Light-morph- Light, is a product that adapts to the usage environment in a loosely controlled fashion, whereas the second case, Shader Printer, provides precise control over the outcome. We discuss some issues and future roles of expert designers that may be caused by the change in the period of democratized fabrication
Data Flow, Spatial Physical Computing
Latest hardware improvements on transceivers supporting Low PowerWide Area Networks (LPWAN) make it feasible to connect small battery powered devices hundred of meters or even km away. In this paper, we propose a physical computing paradigm fully exploiting this novel technology. Spatial physical computing (SPC) leverages not only natural manipulation typically used on TUI and construction kits but also integrates the necessary deambulation (around a building or a city) in the process of creating, testing and tuning a distributed smart sensor/actuator network. The overall system is a compound of (an unlimited) set of independent data-processing nodes supporting an event-driven data-flow programming scheme. We demonstrate in a few examples how such networks can be deployed - spatially programmed - through intuitive physical actions, and discuss the unique qualities and challenges of Spatial Physical Computing
Actuating a Monitor for Posture Changes
The position and orientation of a monitor affects users’ behavior at their desk. In this study, we explored and designed six types of interactions between an actuated monitor and a user to induce posture changes. We built a virtual monitor that simulates the motions of an actuated monitor and slowly moved in the opposite direction of unbalanced sitting postures. We conducted an explorative study with eight participants. The study showed participants’ responses and step by step posture changes toward balanced sitting postures. As contribution, we share considerations for designing monitor actuations that induce posture intervention. Copyright held by the owner/author(s)
Calm Automaton
The abundance of information technology in today’s society results in “Alert Fatigue” due to the overwhelming number of alarms and notifications that attempt to grab our attention. We introduce Calm Automaton, a customizable and programmable physical display that gently visualizes abstract data in a pleasing and meaningful way, without attracting attention. We extend the concept of calm technology with a DIY toolkit to make information and notifications comfortable, personal, and embedded in the periphery. We describe the design and implementation of the motion modules that make the automaton and report on the experience of people using these displays
A Design Research Methodology using 3D-Printed Modular Designs to Study the Aesthetic Appreciation of Form and Material

Taking photos has become not only a daily but also an automatic activity. But how do we use all these pictures? Storage and retrieval are certainly not as well developed as capturing. Storage systems organize photos in the temporal dimension, for example, the Facebook service “Year in Review” or in visual diaries, but typically do not support a systematic comparison. That was the inspiration for this demonstration, employing automatically taken photographs and arranging them so that one could easily go back in time to reflect oneself to the future and past. This is useful for tracking well-being and body changes using time physicalization with a natural interface, as well as an unobtrusive way for systematic capturing of facial images over time
“Footsie”: Exploring Physical Human-Machine-Interaction through Flirtatious Furniture
Footsieis an interactive kinetic art installation. It inspires to connect people through the counter-intuitive physical interaction that is mediated by flirtatious machines. It consists of a table and four robotic chairs; the chair legs carry the motion of footsieand arms caress the back of the participant. While it tackles the controversial culture and social norms on touching others body or being touched, an experimental bodily experience explores new aesthetic interaction between lonely human and a mischievous digital entity. The interaction is provocative in a slightly uncomfortable way, and the paradoxical feelings and stimulating sensations open simultaneous interpretations on the meaning of Human-Machine-Interaction. Through nature inspired design like human spine, flexible muscle of mollusca and a caterpillar's undulating wave motion, these pliable structures were fabricated with 3D printed meta-materials to create the sensual gestures. © 2021 Owner/Author
