L'industria del bioetanolo in Italia
Interest trend in bio-ethanol easily matches crude oil market trend particularly in countries where endogenous no-renewable sources of energy are scarce. Increasing and generalized discussion over the restraint of energy sources and their environmental problems is currently more and more addressing new energy policies to a sustainable development. In this context, the role of renewable energy sources becomes almost strategic mainly considering bio-fuels (biodiesel and bioethanol) suitable for transportation sector, one of main no-renewable energy sources consumers and one of the principal cause of CO2 emissions. This paper will analyse Italian bioethanol industry development, evaluating all more convenient local cultivations from the economic and environmental point of view
Runx transcription factors: Lineage-specific regulators of neuronal precursor cell proliferation and post-mitotic neuron subtype development.
Runt-related (RUNX) genes encode evolutionarily conserved transcription factors that play essential roles during development and adult tissue homeostasis. RUNX proteins regulate the transition from proliferation to differentiation in a variety of cell lineages. Moreover, they control the diversification of distinct cellular phenotypes in numerous tissues. Alterations of RUNX functions are associated with several cancers and other human pathologies, underscoring the vital roles of these transcription factors in adult organs. Insights into the functions and regulations of mammalian RUNX proteins have been provided mostly by studies of RUNX involvement in mechanisms of hematopoietic and skeletal development and disease. A growing number of recent investigations are revealing new functions for RUNX family members during the development of the mammalian nervous system. This review will discuss recent progress in the study of RUNX protein involvement in mammalian neural development, with emphasis on the differentiation of olfactory, sensory, and motor neuron lineages

ANALISI DEL CONTENUTO DI MERCURIO IN ALCUNE MERCI CIRCOLANTI SUL TERRITORIO ITALIANO
The chemical and physical properties of mercury permit a large use in industry, particularly in the chemical sector and to manufacture electrical and electronic appliances, even if it is toxic for humans and the atmosphere. The ingestion of high doses of mercury causes a quite lethal damage to the nervous system. The European Union (EU) has passed several directives to progressively reduce mercury consumption and its presence in different commodities. The aim of the EU actions is to improve the environment and consumer protection. As a consequence it is necessary to have detailed information about the content of this metal in different types of final products. Based on these remarks, the present article will analyse some products that contain mercury a) to illustrate the changes of the amount of mercury during last decades; b) to define policies and governmental actions capable of monitoring the life cycle of commodities that include dangerous substances. In conclusion the final aim of these policies is to improve consumer protection and above all to choose safer disposal methods of commodities
Rice brain oil: a product to exploit
Within the researches regarding agricultural by-products exploitation and functional food increasing demand, Rice Bran Oil (RBO) assumes a particular importance. RBO nutritional characteristics make it a valuable food product. Its up to date worldwide production is equal to approximately 1 Mt (million of tons) even if its estimated productive potentialities are more and more elevated. Italy is the main rice producer in Europe but does not produce this oil.
The aim of this paper is to analyze the available RBO production technologies and to collect further information about the material flows of this important niche product with an high added value
A techno-economic analysis of the biofuels production potential in Italy. A case study: bioethanol from sugar beet
The origin of biofuels – in particular bio-ethanol – date back to the beginning of the 1900s, when H Ford promoted their use. The interest in such energy products recurred in different periods, due to problems associated with the depletion of fossil energy sources and the necessity of reducing environmental impacts due to their use. As widely illustrated in the paper A techno-economic analysis of the biofuels production potential in Italy, (this congress), a team of Commodity Science researchers at the Universities of Bari and Foggia (Italy) have constituted a study group with the aim of analysing the potential of biofuels (bio-ethanol and biodiesel) in Italy. This paper concerns the study of bio-ethanol production chain from sugar industry. It analyses material and energy flows of the whole life cycle which, starting from sugar beet cultivation, can arrive at the production of bio-ethanol. The methodology used, Material Flow Analysis (MFA), allows us to obtain a systematic vision of a) resource flows involved in the examined production, b) the waste generated and c) the associated environmental impact. Based on the results of this analysis, the contribution that the sugar industry can offer to biofuel production has been evaluated.

Rice bran oil: a product to exploit
Within the researches regarding the exploitation of the agricultural by-products and the increasing demand of functional foods, rice bran oil assumes a particular importance. This oil, besides to be a product with an elevated stability in the time, shows an interesting composition in fats (rich of unsaturated fat acids above all oleic and linoleic) and in antioxidant substances (phytosterol, particularly the gamma-oryzanol, tocopherol, etc.). Rice bran oil nutritional characteristics make it a valuable food product. Currently its world production is equal to more or less 1 Mt (million of tons) but estimated productive potentialities are more and more elevated. Italy, for example, is the main rice producer in Europe but does not produce this oil.
The aim of this paper is to analyze the available rice bran oil production technologies and to collect further information about the material and energy flows of this important niche product with an high added value
Perspective of bio-ethanol production from maize in Italy
The rapid increase in crude oil prices, the problem of fossil fuel depletion, global warming, climate change, Kyoto Protocol targets for reducing greenhouse gases, stimulate energy market towards strategic change. Biofuels will enlarge their share versus fossil fuel one.
The impact of energy crops on the development of the agricultural economies encourages the interest towards the biofuels (bioethanol and biodiesel). Italy for example is mostly agricultural country with numerous productive varieties, even if it is necessary to promote a real economic-energy chain. As a consequence the development of this chain could be an opportunity to shift the traditional business of agricultural sector.
This paper regards the analysis of the production of bio-ethanol from maize in Italy. Authors will analyse material and energy flows of the entire life cycle, from the cultivation of the maize to the production of bioethanol. The methodology of Material Flow Analysis (MFA) will allow us to obtain a description of the resource flows, waste generated and an assessment of the environmental impacts. This study will illustrate the contribution and potential of maize as energy crop
