The essay attempts to trace different experiences of workers' unionism in several areas and environments since its distant origins in England in the 18th-century until the present day. Through comparative and long-term history, the paper highlights in every experience, its nature and purpose, its organizational and contractual models, and its relationship with Politics and Economy. Eventually after reconstructing the complex histories of union internationalism and outlining in broad terms the Italian specificities, the essay illustrates the problems, the challenges and the perspectives of modern trade unionism. According to the author the best way forward for the future of Labor, Enterprise and the Union consists in the free and democratic association of workers, in the autonomous and active participation in the Economy and the Politics, but above all in a renewed strong relationship between workers and primary associative realities

The central Warehouses of Rome: from 19th century projects to decline This article aims to illustrate the origins, construction, development and decline of the Central Warehouses of Rome. The paper aims to throw light on the history of one of the most important hubs of the Ostiense area, which was well known as the main industrial area of the city in the early twentieth century. Beginning with the development of the modern Central Warehouses in a national and international context, we then proceed to reconstruct the proposals and projects put forward (from 1870 onwards) to give the new capital of Italy a vast and efficient system of storage. Next we will analyze the conditions which influenced the decision to place the Warehouses in the Ostiense area. The study examines aspects related to the building of the complex, and presents a picture of the activities undertaken by the Society for the Central Warehouses of Rome, with the intention of highlighting the principle elements of the life of the company (1912-1984)

The article aims to highlight the dynamics and the nature of the building sector of 19th and 20th century Rome. The analysis will focus on the relationship between public authority and private interest, which has proven rather tricky during the periods of massive transformations, phases of economic crisis and cases in which public finances are lacking. Special attention will be paid to the case of the “Società Italiana per Imprese Fondiarie” [Italian Company for Real Estate Firm], a building enterprise that was active in Rome in the early 20th century. This company, almost totally neglected by literature (until now), can be considered an efficient point of reference to analyse the highlighted topics, since its life is intertwined with some of the most important economic players of Italy, such as the Bank of Italy, the Credito Italiano [Italian Credit] and the Società Generale Immobiliare [General Company Real Estate]

Gioacchino Ersoch Urban Architect: Projects for the Modernization of the Public Slaughterhouses and the Market System in Nineteenth Century Rome The article reconstructs and analyses the municipal architect Gioacchino Ersoch’s (1815-1902) contribution to the process of modernization undertaken in the sector of public slaughterhouses and markets in Rome during the nineteenth century. Ersoch’s activity was always based on production needs and aimed at the creation of structures suitable for advancing competition. Unfortunately, with the exception of the Mattatoio (slaughterhouse) 1889-1891 at Testaccio, the various municipal administrations that followed each other over time, whether due to chronic budget difficulties or to the absence of a genuine desire to plan a new food market layouts, never took advantage of his ability and his thorough knowledge of the mechanisms governing city food provisioning and distribution
