Specificities of the Third Sector: the Relational Approach
Full text linkThe paper considers the recent critical and sceptical perspectives of social sciences on the Third sector. Above all, it reflects on the difficulty in identifying specificities of this supposed sector of contemporary society. Starting from this scenario, the author introduces the perspective of relational sociology as a possible way of defining a specificity of the sector, on the basis of the different ‘semantics of social relation’. In the second part of the work, a review of ten years of empirical research on the third sector, conducted in Italy, by a team of relational sociologists, puts the theory to the test finding both confirmations and disconfirmations

No full textAfter the “glorious 20s” at the end of the last century, the social sciences have arguably lost their trust in the possibility of defining a theory concerning the existence of the third sector. Having lost its political innocence (Kendall) the concept of the third sector seems to have become a strategic unity (Alcock), used firstly by policy makers to privatize social services and secondly by third sector entrepreneurs to gain room in the quasi-markets of social policies. It therefore seems impossible to define a specific field of social action for the sector (Macmillan), and much less to find an ethical specificity of the sector. The author, by analyzing the recent literature, discusses three different perspective on the third sector. A first perspective denies any possibility of existence of a separate sector of society characterized by ethical aims. The second perspective reduces the ethical attitude of the third sector to a narrative used to conceal material interests. While the third perspective attributes to the social relationships sustained by this sector the possibility to generate ethical attitudes

No full textThere are important links between the economic situation, health and well-being. So much so, that we continue to use GDP as a way of measuring a Country's well-being. At the same time,it seems that the increased average life expectancy during the nineteenth century in the industrialized countries was not only the result of advances in bio-medical sciences, but also, the consequence of the economic development and the related improvements in the standard of living. Therefore, in consideration of the current economic crisis in the industrialized countries, it is important to reflect on the consequences to health. This paper engages with the theme of the impact economic crises has on humans, by examining the changes which occur in the consumer patterns in relation to medicines, personal care products and health services. This work, which aims to be descriptive, rather than explicative or predictive, employs a quantitative method of data analysis collected over repeated surveys from 2009 to 2012 on a panel specifically referring to the Italian population and which also presents some evidence in regards to the impact of the economic crisis on the subjectively perceived sense of well-being

In particular, researchers agree on the fact that economic crises bring an increase in suicides, states of psychological depression, and abuse of alcohol along with them. This work deals with the issue of human impact of economic crisis, and, through a panel of data concerning Italian population, it searches for any possible connection with less critical but anyway significant phenomena, such as the general state of well-being and subjectively perceived health

No full textChe cosa distingue e caratterizza il terzo settore nella società contemporanea? Quale ruolo è chiamato a giocare in un contesto di crisi della modernità ed in particolare del welfare state? Sono domande ricorrenti nelle scienze sociali. Il volume, seguendo l’approccio sociologico relazionale, tenta di rispondere a questi interrogativi. L’autore sostiene che la specificità del terzo settore sta nella particolare attenzione alla relazione sociale ed ai suoi aspetti di legame reciproco. E’ il cosiddetto “effetto di reciprocità” che caratterizza il terzo settore in modo sostanziale e lo mette in grado di rispondere ad alcuni degli attuali fallimenti relazionali di Stato e mercato. Se si segue questa pista di indagine, si perviene ad una prospettiva di osservazione originale, che consente di rispondere ad una grande sfida del domani: che posto occupa, infatti, la relazione sociale nei servizi di welfare?
