Digital Animation for Representing Architectural Design
Since the late Nineties digital movies are emerging as one of the main methods for submission of architectural designs at international competitions, public presentations and shares on websites of contemporary masters.
The chapter highlights how the ability to access the fourth dimension, through the construction of a sequence of images, constitutes a specific prerogative of digital representation, which goes beyond the static constraint imposed by conventional methods of representation.
The author investigates on the methods, techniques and languages of the fourth-dimensional communication of architecture, unexplored area of research thus far, already the subject of her previous studies, relating them with the masters’ personal poetics.
The chapter provides also analysis and critiques of the case studies collected by the author from the beginning of the phenomenon, and traces an ideal interpretation path, due both to the changing technologies and the emerging specific languages
The Citadel of Turin "in Absentia". Drawings and Reconstruction Hypotheses after Demolition
The Citadel of Turin is one of the first examples of Modern Age pentagonal fortification and model for other contemporary fortresses, mainly in Italy, France and Flanders.
The Citadel assumed a decisive role in the favorable resolution of the siege of Turin in 1706, but many years later, a series of municipal deliberations underlined its inactivity, defensive inefficiency, and character of obstacle to urban expansion; then its off-ground structures was gradually dismantled from mid-nineteenth century.
After the demolition, the interest of the scholars was particularly enlivened by works on urban history and history of the art of war.
Among the numerous features considered by scholars, this paper highlights those related to the shape and dimensions of the Citadel which, not univocally interpreted, still today present some level of uncertainty.
The author applies graphical analyses and reconstructive digital drawings to the most interesting archival drawings and scholars' reconstruction, and proposes different observations about: the irregularity of the external pentagon; the shape of the bastions, the presence of the second flank; the geometric relationship between the flank and the curtain
Reconstructive Architectural and Urban Digital Modelling
The digital reconstruction of contemporary architectural and urban complexes which were demolished, transformed or have been only theorically conceived, remaining 'on paper', is now a tool of considerable heuristic value, allowing to preserve, interpret and create new images of cultural heritages that no longer exist in their original shape or never reached a material construction.
This chapter reviews methods and techniques of digital reconstruction, through an overview of the international theoretical statements, and then the author explores the potentials of three-dimensional reconstruction and the prerogatives of animation in the interaction with three-dimensional data.
The examination of several international case studies, and also some experiences personally conducted highlights the different strategies used for the preservation of the memory of such heritage
disegnare con... DINO COPPO
Lunette Vaults in Guarini’s Work.
In Guarini’s systematization of vaulted systems based on geometric reasoning, the lunette vaults created by cutting main vaults of different geometric shape and inserting the groins take on a primary role. This operation increases the natural lighting of the rooms and ensures airiness and dynamism to atria and halls of Baroque palaces. In the Architettura Civile (published posthumous in 1737) and the Modo di misurare le fabriche (1674), he describes the geometrical origin and the measurement of the vaults, respectively. In the first treatise, the lunette vaults emerge as a typology rich of shape variations and implementations in civil buildings, in the second the surfaces of the vaults are attributed to the geometric matrices of the single elements and present some novelties with respect to the Architettura Civile, having semi-ellipses, and arcs of circumference and ellipse, as directrices. In this work the significant relationships between these two Guarini’s treatises, whose complementarity emerges in the continuous reference to the Geometry-Architecture binomial, are developed and deepened. The graphical analysis and digital modeling of surfaces allow not only the recognition of the geometric primitives underlying the structure of the vaulted systems and the verification of the measurement rules that Guarini largely attributes to himself, but also the comparison with the architectures realized in the period of the second expansion of Turin.
Defensive Architecture of the Mediterranean
The original idea of FORTMED was that of bringing together researchers working on Modern Age
Fortifications of the Mediterranean at a conference, with the aim of creating an interdisciplinary
network of researchers. Indeed, the primary objective of the Conference is to exchange and share
knowledge, valorisation, management, and exploitation of Culture and Heritage that developed on the
Western Mediterranean Coast in the Modern Age, considering the dissemination of the results as a
crucial resource to achieve the objectiv
Digital Reconstruction of "on Paper" Projects. Case Studies from Mollino's Archives
Digital reconstruction of unbuilt project is today at the center of multidisciplinary interests.
Starting from graphical analysis of original drawings, 3D modelling and animation allow creating virtual images of "on paper" architectural heritage.
This proposal aims to show the heuristic potential of reconstructive digital modelling, assuming as case studies some unrealized project by Carlo Mollino
