No full textJohn Mather’s seminal works in Hamiltonian dynamics represent some of the most important contributions to our understanding of the complex balance between stable and unstable motions in classical mechanics. His novel approach—known as Aubry-Mather theory—singles out the existence of special orbits and invariant measures of the system, which possess a very rich dynamical and geometric structure. In particular, the associated invariant sets play a leading role in determining the global dynamics of the system. This book provides a comprehensive introduction to Mather’s theory, and can serve as an interdisciplinary bridge for researchers and students from different fields seeking to acquaint themselves with the topic.
Starting with the mathematical background from which Mather’s theory was born, Alfonso Sorrentino first focuses on the core questions the theory aims to answer—notably the destiny of broken invariant KAM tori and the onset of chaos—and describes how it can be viewed as a natural counterpart of KAM theory. He achieves this by guiding readers through a detailed illustrative example, which also provides the basis for introducing the main ideas and concepts of the general theory. Sorrentino then describes the whole theory and its subsequent developments and applications in their full generality.

No full textGilbert Sorrentino (1929–2006) was an experimental writer and poet who wrote 19 novels, 10 collections of poetry, a book of essays, a collection of stories, and a novella. He is particularly known for his use of formal constraints and metafictional conceits. Sorrentino was born in Brooklyn on April 7, 1929, and went to public schools there. Although he had two stints at Brooklyn College in the 1950s, he never completed his degree, and is usually considered an autodidact. He served in the Medical Corps of the US Army, and, upon leaving in 1953, decided to become a writer. Sorrentino's first marriage to Elsene Wiessner ended in 1960 after a cross-country road trip, which he fictionalized in The Sky Changes (1966). They had two children, Jesse and Delia. Sorrentino subsequently married Victoria Ortiz and had another child, the novelist Christopher Sorrentino. Sorrentino achieved some early renown as a poet with links to Robert Creeley and the Black Mountain school. He founded the journal Neon with Hugh Selby, Jr. and others and served as its editor until 1960. During this period, William Carlos Williams included a small piece of Sorrentino's writing in Book Five of the long poem Paterson (1958). He then edited the journal Kulchur in the early 1960s and worked as an editor at Grove Press under Barney Rossett through the end of the 1960s. Sorrentino also had a long friendship with John O'Brien, and encouraged him to create the Review of Contemporary Fiction and Dalkey Archive Press

No full textSe scrivesse oggi Lippmann analizzerebbe le nuove frontiere del giornalismo e il ruolo svolto nella moltiplicazione delle sfere pubbliche, che ha fatto parlare di sfera pubblica interrelata (Bentivegna e Boccia Artieri 2020). Un’evoluzione del concetto di sfera pubblica densa (Sorrentino 2008), ancora efficace per descrivere società caratterizzate da un sovraccarico informativo, che diventa anche sovraccarico interpretativo e ben sintetizzato dal concetto di “moltitudine”. Un sovraccarico che sta ridefinendo i concetti di rilevanza e notiziabilità, restringendo – nel contempo – la condivisione delle informazioni, con la conseguenza di rendere meno intelligibile la realtà.If he were writing today, Lippmann would be analysing the new frontiers of journalism and the role it plays in the multiplication of public spheres, which has led to the concept of the interrelated public sphere (Bentivegna and Boccia Artieri 2020). This is an evolution of the concept of dense public sphere (Sorrentino 2008), still effective in describing societies characterised by an information overload, which also becomes an interpretative overload and is well summarised by the concept of 'multitude'. An overload that is redefining the concepts of relevance and newsworthiness, restricting - at the same time - the sharing of information, with the consequence of making reality less intelligible

Tenutosi negli anni 1988-1990, il corso ha rappresentato - assieme al master in comunicazione d'impresa di Publitalia - l'unica esperienza formativa pluriennale nel campo delle scienze e tecniche della comunicazione prima dell'avvento dei nuovi corsi di laurea in scienze della comunicazione, istituiti all'inizio degli anni '90. Ideato da Enrico Cheli e coordinato dal medesimo e da Carlo Sorrentino, il corso si avvaleva di un comitato scientifico composto, oltre che dai suddetti, anche da Giovanni Bechelloni, Margherita Ciacci e Gilberto Tinacci Mannelli
