Thermal disinfection of poultry grow-out facilities in Central-Northern Italy.
Chemical treatments are commonly adopted for poultry houses sanitation. In fact, ordinary floor disinfection is needed to achieve the depletion of pathogenic population (i.e. some species of bacteria and fungi) and reduce the risk of meat contamination. Recently, the increased attention of consumers and operators health, as well as the quality of food, brought farmers to consider environmental friendly alternative methods. A specific two-year experimental research (2005-2007) was carried out in a Central-Northern part of Italy in order to set up new machines and strategies for floor disinfection of poultry houses by means of an open flame. The trials were run in the machine shop of the University of Pisa (indoor, under controlled conditions) and in two different private farms (a broiler house and an outdoor pheasant farm). The first experiment consisted in a series of bench test trials, carried out in order to evaluate the efficiency and the adjustment of LPG fed open flame burners on pre-inoculated steel plates. During the second experiment, the ordinary chemical disinfection strategy was compared, in a broiler house, to the innovative technique, carried out by means of an adapted 1.5 m wide mounted flaming machine. The last experiment consisted in the evaluation of the efficiency and operative performances of a 2 m wide flaming machine prototype built for open air pheasant farms. The results obtained are very promising as, thermal disinfection strategy seems to be very effective on floor pathogens and cheaper than the ordinary chemical one
Una operatrice innovativa semovente per la disinfezione/disinfestazione del terreno con vapore attivato: effetto sulla temperatura del suolo, sul controllo dei principali organismi dannosi alle colture orticole e della banca seme del terreno
La disinfezione del terreno è una pratica molto
diffusa in Italia. Il principio attivo più efficace e
utilizzato in passato, il bromuro di metile, è adesso
bandito dall’Unione Europea, decisione che
potrà essere presa anche relativamente alle sue
alternative chimiche, che, pur essendo sempre in
commercio, non sono state incluse nell’Allegato I
alla Direttiva 91/414/CEE. L’impiego del vapore
è invece una valida alternativa “non-chimica” al
bromuro di metile, specialmente a fronte degli
ultimi studi effettuati nel nostro paese, che hanno
permesso lo sviluppo di macchine in grado di
effettuare una efficace disinfezione/disinfestazione
del terreno senza causare gli effetti negativi
storicamente attribuibili all’impiego del calore
umido per i trattamenti al suolo. In questo lavoro
sono riportati i risultati dell’ultimo biennio di
sperimentazione condotto con l’operatrice semovente
cingolata Celli Ecostar SC600, che impiega
il sistema “Bioflash”, brevetto internazionale che
consiste nell’utilizzo di vapore e sostanze a reazione
esotermica. I risultati ottenuti hanno mostrato
un’ottima efficacia del sistema nel controllo sia
dei semi delle infestanti che di funghi, virus e nematodi
fitoparassit
Experiences with Physical Weed Control on Hard Surfaces in Central Italy
In Italy weed control in urban areas is mainly performed by means of mowing cutting and
herbicide distribution. While trimmers are not effective in reducing weed density and they are also
potentially injurious for hard surfaces and the safety of citizens and operators, chemical control
induces resistance to active compounds in spontaneous plants and it is surely a source of
environmental pollution and a risk factor for the health of human beings and animals. For this
reason the use of herbicides in urban areas is strictly regulated by laws. As an alternative to ordinary
weed control devices, thermal equipments can be used successfully for weed control on hard
surfaces. Flaming machines are the most efficient among thermal devices and they are suitable for
treatments in many urban contexts.
The aim of this research was to evaluate the effects of different weed managements (flaming,
mowing, herbicide application, and flaming+herbicide application) on weed dynamics in two cities
of Tuscany (Central Italy) and to compare the total working time and costs of operations in order to
define a proper strategy for the control of weed flora growing on hard surfaces in a typical
mediterranean environment.
A hand knapsack device and three motorized flaming prototypes were also projected, built and
tested at the University of Pisa. One of the self-propelled versions of the flaming machines was also
used for a trial of weed management in the city of Livorno between October 2006 and June 2007 in
order to evaluate its technical performances and effectiveness
