What is the source of L1 attrition? The effect of recent L1 re-exposure on Spanish speakers under L1 attrition
The recent hypothesis that L1 attrition affects the ability to process interface structures but not knowledge representations (Sorace, 2011) is tested by investigating the effects of recent L1 re-exposure on antecedent preferences for Spanish pronominal subjects, using offline judgements and online eye-tracking measures. Participants included a group of native Spanish speakers experiencing L1 attrition (‘attriters’), a second group of attriters exposed exclusively to Spanish before they were tested (‘re-exposed’), and a control group of Spanish monolinguals. The judgement data shows no significant differences between the groups. Moreover, the monolingual and re-exposed groups are not significantly different from each other in the eye-tracking data. The results of this novel manipulation indicate that attrition effects decrease due to L1 re-exposure, and that bilinguals are sensitive to input changes. Taken together, the findings suggest that attrition affects online sensitivity with interface structures rather than causing a permanent change in speakers’ L1 knowledge representations

Valence tautomerism interconversion triggers transition to stable charge distribution in solid polymeric cobalt-polyoxolene complexes
The reaction of 3,3,3,3-tetramethyl-5,5,6,6-tetrahydroxy-1,1spiro-bis(indane), L, with cobalt salts inthe presence of diazine ligands affords polymeric derivatives of general formula[CoL(diazine)]∞·nH2O, L being coordinated as a mixed-valence SQ-Cat species. The bipiridyl ando-phenantroline derivatives have been characterised by means of magnetic, EPR and calorimetricmeasurements. The characterisation showed that both systems are obtained in a metastable chargedistribution, presumably trapped due to the class I character of the mixed valence form of the ligand. The occurrence of entropy-driven valence tautomeric interconversion induces the transition to the moststable charge distribution. The photomagnetic characterisation evidenced that valence tautomericprocess can be photoinduced and that the lifetime of the photoinduced metastable state, obtained inlow yield, is of ca. 2 × 105 s at 9 K
Dinuclear ruthenium bipyridine complexes with a bis(iminodioxolene)-meta-phenylene ligand: magnetic coupling and mixed valence character of the semiquinonato species
The dinuclear bis-iminosemiquinonato [Ru(bpy)2(L)2Ru(bpy)2](PF6)2 complex where L is the deprotonated form of N,N′-bis(3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxyphenyl)-1,3-phenylenediamine (H4L), has been synthesised. For comparison purposes, the mononuclear iminosemiquinonato [Ru(bpy)2L′]PF6 formed by the N-phenyl-o-aminophenol (H2L′) was also investigated. Magnetic investigation evidences that the bis-semiquinonato species is characterised by a moderately strong ferromagnetic interaction (H = JS1·S2, J = −85(5) cm−1). This result is the theoretically expected one and it is contrasting with the antiferromagnetic interaction observed in previously investigated complexes containing the same ligand. It is suggested that the different behaviour is determined by the different coordination requirements occurring in these complexes. The spectroelectrochemical analysis provides a clear evidence of the valence trapped character of the mono-semiquinonato forms of the ligand. The two mixed valence semiquinonato species containing the quinonato-semiquinonato and semiquinonato-catecholato bridging ligand can be described as class II, but show a significantly different electronic coupling. The electronic factors determining this behaviour are discussed

Structural and historical assessment of a modern heritage masterpiece: "Palazzo del Lavoro" in Turin
A structural and historical assessment study on "Palazzo del Lavoro", a modern heritage building in Turin, designed by Pier Luigi Nervi in 1959, was carried out within a National Research Project focused on the correlations between the leading engineering and architectural activities in Italy during the 1950s and 1960s. Based on the original design documentation collected through records research, a complete finite element model of the building was generated, along with detailed models of its main structural members, represented by monumental reinforced concrete columns, a mushroom-type steel roof, and reinforced concrete ribbed gallery slabs. The results of the linear and non-linear analyses developed by these models, aimed at fully understanding the original design concept of the various members, as well as at evaluating their current static and seismic safety conditions, are summarized in the paper. Retrofit hypotheses are also proposed for the steel roof beams and the cantilever elements of the gallery floors, which did not meet some of the structural requirements. © 2011 WIT Press
Analysis, Design, and Construction of a Base-Isolated Multiple Building Structure
The analysis and design of a multiple residential building, seismically protected by a base isolation system incorporating double friction pendulum sliders as protective devices, are presented in the paper. The building, situated in the suburban area of Florence, is composed of four independent reinforced concrete framed structures, mutually separated by three thermal expansion joints. The plan is L-shaped, with dimensions of about 75 m in the longitudinal direction and about 30 m along the longest side of the transversal direction. These characteristics identify the structure as the largest example of a base-isolated “artificial ground” ever built in Italy. The base isolation solution guarantees lower costs, a much greater performance, and a finer architectural look, as compared to a conventional fixed-base antiseismic design. The characteristics of the building and the isolators, the mechanical properties and the experimental characterization campaign and preliminary sizing carried out on the latter, and the nonlinear time-history design and performance assessment analyses developed on the base isolated building are reported in this paper, along with details about the installation of the isolators and the plants and highlights of the construction works
In ogni caso, non può essere trascurata in alcun modo la volontà del malatoAccording to the latest openings of the Constitutional Court1 and based on the bioethical pronouncements2, we analyse the unclear Italian legal perimeter regarding "the end of life"3,4 ,5. We highlight the limitations and the and the need to recognize the fundamental right of the individual to medically assisted death (MAD) in the legal sphere, specifically the patient’s ability to self-determination. The limit between the incitement to suicide and the murder of the consenting is not well defined, therefore it is necessary to give importance to the ability to self-determination of the subject. It is necessary to supplement and adapt the code of medical ethics6 (art.4,17,38,39), providing in the rule the conscientious objection by the professional7, outlining the future implications on the nature of the treatment relationship. We also evaluate the defining aspects of life support treatments (in a "semi-extensive" way)8 and the clinical-therapeutic inadequate of their interruption, that is the only way used currently, forcing the patient and family members to suffer more, with an unreasonable limitation of right to self-determination guaranteed by Articles 2.2,13,32 of the Constitution. This constitutional violation is not resolved by the simple exclusion of the criminal liability indicated by the Court: the lack of a clear legislation of the procedure concerning medically assisted death could lead to risk of abuse against fragile and vulnerable people. Finally, we examine other possible future strategies on the implementation of the procedure, also the prescription and preparation of the lethal drug 9,10, including any bioethical, technical-operational 11, and incriminating implications, both for the doctor and for all the other subjects involved, regardless of the patient’s self-administering capacity. The right medical intervention must be established on the basis of the concrete conditions, without neglecting the will of the patient 12
