    Analysis of phase transformation kinetics by intrinsic stress evolutions during the isothermal aging of amorphous Ni(P) and Sn/Ni(P) films

    The kinetics for the crystallization of amorphous Ni(P) films and the formation of intermetallic compounds in Sn/Ni(P) films during isothermal aging treatment were studied with in situ intrinsic stress measurements. The intrinsic stress changes from crystallization were about 200 and 150 MPa for Ni(14P) and Ni(11.7P) films, respectively, and according to Johnson-Mehl-Avrami analysis, the Avrami exponents were about 3.6 +/- 0.46 and 4.2 +/- 0.39, and the activation energies were 242 and 240 kJ/mol, respectively, for the crystallization of Ni(14P) and Ni(11.7P) films. The stress due to the formation of intermetallic compounds such as Ni3Sn4 and MY in Sn/Ni(11.7P) films was about 320 MPa. Application of in situ stress measurements to the empirical growth model during isothermal phase transformation of Sn/Ni(P) showed that the intermetallic compounds growth was interface reaction-controlled (n = 0.91 +/- 0.08) in the early stage and then became diffusion-controlled (n 0.38 +/- 0.01), and the activation energy was about 35.9 kJ/mol

    In silico analysis of the effects of H-2 and CO2 on the metabolism of a capnophilic bacterium Mannheimia succiniciproducens

    This study presents an in-depth study on the physiological behavior of Mannheimia succiniciproducens, a capnophilic bacterium and an efficient succinic acid producer, under varying gas conditions as H-2 and CO2 play important roles in the production of succinic acid. Constraints-based flux analysis of the genome-scale metabolic model of M. succiniciproducens was performed to estimate the production patterns of several organic acids in response to varying H-2. CO2, and glucose uptake rates. Results from controlled cultivations performed previously and constraints-based flux analyses of M. succiniciproducens in this study revealed that there is an optimal range of CO2 level in the medium for enhancing cell growth and succinic acid production at a given glucose uptake rate. Furthermore, the uptake rates of H-2 and CO2 from the medium have a direct relationship with each other, significantly influencing the rates of cell growth and succinic acid production. Predictions made in this study quantitatively describe the physiological changes of the cell in response to varying H-2, CO2, and glucose uptake rates, which consequently allow us to identify the feasible physiological states of the cell with respect to cell growth rate and succinic acid production rate.     Design and analysis of HYPER

    KAERI (Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute) has been developing an accelerator driven transmutation system called HYPER (hybrid power extraction reactor). It is designed to transmute long-lived TRU and fission products such as Tc-99 and 1-129. HYPER is a 1000 MWth system with k(eff) = 0.98 which requires 17 mA proton beam for an operation at EOC (end of cycle). Pb-Bi is used as the coolant and target material at the same time. HYPER core has 186 ductless hexagonal fuel assemblies. The fuel blanket is divided into three TRU (transuranic elements) enrichment zones to flatten the radial power distribution. The core height of HYPER was compromised at 150 cm, and the power density was determined such that the average coolant speed could be about 1.64 m/s. The inlet and exit coolant temperatures are 340 and 490 degrees C, respectively, in the core. The cylindrical beam tube and spherical window is adopted as the basic window design of HYPER. We have also introduced an Lead-Bismuth eutectic injection tube to maximize the allowable proton beam current. A metallic alloy of U-TRU-Zr is considered as the HYPER fuel, in which pure lead is used as the bonding material. As a result, a large gas plenum is placed above the active core. TRU transmutation rate is 282 kg/yr. In the case of a FP transmutation, 28.0 kg of Tc-99 and 7.0 kg of I-129 are incinerated per year. The MACSIS-H (metal fuel performance analysis code for simulating the in-reactor behavior under steady-state conditions-HYPER) for an metallic fuel was developed as the steady-state performance computer code. The MATRA (multichannel analyzer for transient and steady-state in rod array) code was used to perform the thermal-hydraulic analysis of HYPER core. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

    Coating of tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) vinyltriethoxysilane (VTES) hybrid solution on polymer films

    Tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS)/vinyltriethoxysilane (VTES) hybrid materials were prepared and the hydrolysis and condensation reactions during processing were investigated by means of Si-29 NMR solution spectroscopy. The variation of drying characteristics of the coating films was examined with respect to the tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS)/vinyltriethoxysilane (VTES) ratio, as well as drying temperature, by FT-IR spectroscopy. It is shown that the TO mode of Si-O-Si stretching absorption was enhanced with increasing tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) content and drying temperature. Also, the wettability of the coating films on polymer films was independent of the solution composition but enhanced by the precoating of poly(4-hydroxystrene) (PHS) as a wetting agent. The adhesion between the coating and the films was also enhanced when the vinyltriethoxysilane (VTES) content in the coating solution was increased
