Similar hats on similar heads: uniformity and alienation at the Rat Pack’s Summit Conference of Cool
This article considers the nightclub shows of the Rat Pack, focussing particularly on the Summit performances at the Sands Hotel, Las Vegas, in 1960. Featuring Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr, Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop, these shows encompassed musical, comic and dance routines, drawing on the experiences each member had in live vaudeville performance. The discussion outlines these individual histories, and draws attention to a shared fascination with impersonation, which forms an explicit and implicit part of the act, as the performers’ stage personas are already emulatory. In addition to the influence of vaudeville, the construction of the Rat Pack also draws on the structures of blackface minstrelsy, with the interactions of the five members being patterned on a fluid variant of the interlocutor-endmen relationships. The interweaving of these influences and performance styles underpins a dominant concern of the troupe, as the comic material frequently negotiates the racial, national and religious identities of the individual performers. In particular, this deals with their shared status of having immigrant ancestry, a status which I term as being ‘hyphenated-American’, suspended between historical, public and aspirational identities
LENGUAJES Y CULTURAS EN CONTACTO
Starting from the concept of intercultural competence proposed by the Council of Europe (1998) and on the basis of the new curricula of the Instituto Cervantes Plan Curricular (2006), in this handbook the authors develop learning activities about Spanish for specific purposes, to find new forms of linguistic transactions and meaning negotiation, to guide students to discover the social dimension of both languages : Legal and Adminitsrative (Dr. Sinatra) and Tourism (Dr. Di Gesù). The text consists of a first theoretical part, by Dr. Sinatra, and a practical part, by both authors, with six units, each of which consists of texts on the different types of language.
In the first chapter of the book, Dr. Sinatra reviews the main lines of research involving contact between the cultures and the concept of interculturalism, intercultural communication and the evolution of the characteristics of "intercultural competence". Among the studies that are centred on the concept of "culture", the author chose those based on so-called “Componente de Aprendizaje”, which includes a set of values and rules of life deemed necessary to be able to interact socially and to follow a predetermined set of social norms, even in contexts of teaching and learning. In the second chapter the book explains the role of intercultural awareness in the learning / acquisition of foreign languages. Diversity should not be considered an obstacle for communication but an element that enriches it from the perspective of respect for different cultures and aims to promote mediation avoiding prejudice and discrimination.
In the third chapter of Lenguajes y Culturas en contacto the authors explain the criteria that have made the selection of texts about: tourism and sustainable tourism; immigration; equal opportunities and cultural diversity; disability; new technologies and sustainable development. The text consists also of a range of complementary materials: students can self-monitor their progress step by step and build their own glossary of technical terms: the Enlaces, the Glosario de los Términos especifícos y de la sostenibilidad the Ficha de Autoevaluación with Gramatica mínima de errores and Clave de ejercicios
La traduzione come specchio identitario in "Legioni e Falangi/ Legiones y Falanges"
Beyond knowledge: Learner characteristics influencing conceptual change
Research on conceptual change learning from the 1980s to the early 1990s focused primarily on characterizing learners’ developing knowledge representations, categorizing misconceptions, and designing instructional methods to overcome misconceptions and promote scientific understandings. Since Pintrich, Marx, and Boyle’s (1993) influential article articulating the role of motivation in conceptual change, a “warming trend” has occurred in research and in the development of models of change (Sinatra, 2005). That is, researchers have become increasing interested in the role affective and motivational characteristics play in both fostering and inhibiting change often without the learner’s awareness. In this chapter, we focus on affective and motivational characteristics that learners can bring under their conscious control to foster their own knowledge restructuring (Sinatra & Pintrich, 2003). These include goals, epistemological beliefs, self-efficacy beliefs, interests, and emotions. We examine research demonstrating the influence of these characteristics on conceptual change. We also consider the potential power of these characteristics in promoting change if learners can harness these processes to direct their own learning. Finally, we consider the implication of this view for the development of change pedagogies that might support the development of learner controlled knowledge restructuring
