CHILDREN’S RIGHTS IN HOSPITAL: FROM STATEMENTS TO RESPECT
The recent celebration of the twentieth anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989) allows
both a general consideration of children’s rights and self-criticism of social and professionals sectors, in order to better focus on the
distance between official statements and effective respect in children’s life settings.
These settings also include hospitals which are an occasional but also important life setting for children. Hospital is a fundamental
institution in terms of the social role it plays and it also has a pivotal role also in relation to other social organizations and
community services.
Recently international research – conducted in 17 hospitals and pediatric departments in Europe and Australia – studied the
respect for children’s rights in hospitals, arousing the attention of the hospital management, of the staff and of children’s representative
associations on this issue. This also enabled us to underline the main problems and merits concerning children’s rights
Six assertions about the salutogenic approach and health promotion
Background: The concept of health is a continuously changing issue, with ever richer and more comprehensive
meanings and definitions. In recent decades, we have witnessed a strong evolution of the scientific paradigms
and cultural frameworks that influence health patterns. In particular, in 1986 the Charter of Ottawa gave
further dimensions to the concept of health and pushed the concept of health promotion to the forefront. In
this context, the salutogenic approach, proposed by A. Antonovsky, represents a theoretical contribution
which stimulates discussion about meanings and implications.
Aim and Methods: The present paper aims to provide a conceptual framework for the interpretation of
health patterns and to broaden the theoretical interpretation of the salutogenic approach. In order to do
this, a literature review was carried out, taking into account several disciplines and perspectives, including
sociology and anthropology. The data collection for this paper was undertaken through two parallel literature
reviews and systematisation of the information gathered.
Results: The following health patterns were identified: the disease treatment pattern, the health care pattern,
the disease prevention pattern and the health promotion pattern. These approaches allow one to better
analyse and understand the added values of the salutogenic approach.
Conclusions: The present discussion contributes to the debate surrounding the salutogenesis theory and its
applicability to the healthcare setting by proposing six assertions about the salutogenic approach to health
promotion
A rights and equity-based Platform and Action Cycle to advance child health and well-being by fulfilling the rights of children
The Think and Action Tank (TAT) on Children’s Rights to Health was established in 2013 as an
international network of child health advocates. The TAT’s mission is, “To develop, implement,
evaluate, and disseminate rights and equity-based strategies, models, and tools to advance
children’s health and well-being by fulfilling their rights.” Toward this end, the TAT has developed
a conceptual and operational framework to support a human and child rights-based approach to
health; and a Platform and Action Cycle (PAC) as a strategy and tool to translate the principles of
human and child rights-based approaches to health into practice. The PAC consists of three action
steps—contextualizing, assessing, and improving. Through a structured process of generating
rights and equity-based statements, indicators, and reports, the PAC establishes a mechanism to
engage multi-disciplinary professionals and children themselves in efforts to realize the vision of
