Simulare il comportamento umano negli edifici. Un modello previsionale

    No full text

This paper presents the development of a modelling and simulation approach aimed at supporting prediction of possible re-use phenomena of built heritage artefacts and the consequent impacts on their preservation. In the strong debate regarding the possibility of assigning new functions to built heritage artefacts, it has progressively emerged the crisis of the normative approach – too general to be successfully applied to so unique and complex artefacts such as the built heritage ones – as well as the unsustainability of a purely conservative approach that aims at the exclusive preservation of the building. In this context, the design phase assumes the relevant role of hosting the complex balancing between the functional requirements (derived by the intended use and users) and those related to the artefact preservation. In this phase, the prediction activities are crucial, both in terms of formal and technological prefiguration of the artefact and of prediction of its performances and of its use processes. To date, several modelling approaches (such as the Building Information Modelling) have focused on depicting the building in terms of its technological components; at the same time, still few digital approaches are available in order to support the complex balance between functional requirements derived from users and the preservation needs of the artefact. In this filed, the proposed model relies on the integration of an extended, semantically reach tridimensional representation of the built heritage artefact and a dynamic simulation of the use phenomenon, generated through the behaviour of a set of virtual agents (defined as V-Users) representing the intended users. This approach relies on the idea of modelling the building and its use as a system of interacting entities, each of them made of its geometrical representation, its non-geometrical features, and its behaviour. The simulation platform is a distributed intelligence system, where AI and computational resources are assigned both to Virtual Users entities (as in current agent-based systems) and to the components of the built environment

The prediction and evaluation of future building response to its intended use and users is a complex task that designers have to face during the design process. As matter of fact, few methods exist that can help designers in such task, despite its importance in the definition of the building quality; norms and regulations, personal designer's experience, post-occupancy evaluation have shown their limit to provide predictive models of the complex phenomenon of human behaviour in built environments. With the increasing of computing power, virtual simulation techniques have been introduced in building design to control, manage and predict complex systems of building performances such as its energy or structural behaviour, but not to representation of buildings while-in-use. The Agent-Based Modelling and Simulation (ABMS) paradigm has been applied in building design to simulation of specific aspects of human behaviour and in specific occurrences (for instance in fire egress simulations), while a more extensive representation of users actions, behaviours, and activities is still missing. In order to overcome this lack, in this paper we propose to support agent-based simulation with a knowledge base, developed by means of ontologies and able to provide a structured system of data about human-building interaction, useful as start hypotheses for Agent-based Simulation. For its development, we rely on the general template of building knowledge management already proposed by the research group (Carrara et al., 2009), extending it to representation of the whole system users-built environment. The proposed general template, configured by the meaning - properties - rules structure, allows the formalization of users/agents entities, whose parameter, attributes and behavioural rules can encode several 'aspects' of real users and their interactions with the other entities (building components, furniture, other people) in a built environment. Currently, a first application has been developed dealing with the virtually testing of a small hospital ward, in order to evaluate the reliability and the potentiality of such approach. Predicting future users’ behaviour and their activities in a building is a cardinal and highly complex task that designers have to face during the design process. Even though architects and their clients have at their disposal several computational tools which can help them to predict and evaluate many aspects of building performance such as cost, energy consumption, and structural integrity, they have no means to predict and evaluate how well the proposed design will perform from the users’ point of view. Simulative approaches are gradually overcoming this shortcoming but, at present, they are limited to the representation of specific occurrences and behavioural performance aspects -such as emergency egress and crowd behaviour- while more extensive and comprehensive representations of human behaviour in built environments, able to simulate everyday life and activities in buildings, are still missing. Capitalizing on current developments in the video game industry, this research -partially developed at the Technion Israel Institute of Technology and at Berkeley University of California- aims at establishing a new approach to human behaviour simulation in built environments, based on a clear, reliable and precise formalization of the use processes as specific structures of active entities called Events. Their role is to comprise knowledge about the building users, the activities they perform and the spaces where those specific activities are performed. Equipped with AI engines, events control and coordinate the actors’ behaviour during the simulation, providing a coherent representation of their interaction, cooperation and collaboration. The proposed model allows designers to test and evaluate the impact of their decisions on future users’ life and activities in the design process, when it is still possible to intervene to improve the quality of the final product, to solve critical issues and to reduce time and costs. To test its reliability, the model has been applied to simulate the functioning of a hospital nursing ward, both in routine and emergency circumstances

An accurate representation of the knowledge related to an historical architectural artefact is a key element of its conservation process. Interventions and decisions taken by the different specialists involved are based on the knowledge acquired of the object, and any error or inconsistence in this representation can lead to mistakes. On this basis, this research aims at extending semantic web approaches and technologies to architectural heritage knowledge modeling in order to provide an integrated and multidisciplinary representation of the artifact and of the knowledge necessary to support any decision or any intervention and management activity

Building-Use Knowledge Representation for Architectural Design An ontology-based implementation

During building design processes, designers have to predict and evaluate future building performances oriented to its intended use and users. Current BIM and IFC technologies support designers allowing data exchange and information interoperability but, since their lack in semantics, they don't provide any knowledge implementation about how the designed building will be actually used and how people will interact with it. The research described in this paper aims to overcome this shortcoming by developing a new modelling approach, oriented to representation and management of knowledge related to future building use and users. The proposed representation model is based on an already accepted ontology-based structure and will make this large amount of knowledge accessible and usable by designers during architectural design processes, in order to enhance the final quality of the design product

In the built heritage context, BIM has shown difficulties in representing and managing the large and complex knowledge related to non-geometrical aspects of the heritage. Within this scope, this paper focuses on a domain-specific semantic-enrichment of BIM methodology, aimed at fulfilling semantic representation requirements of built heritage through Semantic Web technologies. To develop this semantic-enriched BIM approach, this research relies on the integration of a BIM environment with a knowledge base created through information ontologies. The result is knowledge base system - and a prototypal platform - that enhances semantic representation capabilities of BIM application to architectural heritage processes. It solves the issue of knowledge formalization in cultural heritage informative models, favouring a deeper comprehension and interpretation of all the building aspects. Its open structure allows future research to customize, scale and adapt the knowledge base different typologies of artefacts and heritage activities

Knowledge representation and management play a key role in built heritage field, deeply influencing decisions and actions of the different specialists involved in investigation, intervention, conservation and fruition processes. An accurate and complete representation and comprehension of architectural heritage artefact require a large amount of semantics related to its intangible aspects such as social and historical context. On these bases, the research presented in this paper investigates the potential impact of Building Information Modelling introduction in built heritage field in order to enhance knowledge management and, as a consequence, collaboration among specialists. To include in the artefact representation both tangible and intangible knowledge, the model has been conceived as the integration of a BIM environment with a knowledge base developed by means of ontologies. To test its features and capabilities, the model has been applied to the archaeological investigation of the Castor and Pollux temple at Cori, Italy

At present, few computational methods exist that support architect in predicting how their design will be used and experience after its construction. The research described here aims at establishing a new approach for the computational simulation of building occupancy, focused on a clear definition of use scenarios as specific structures of active entities called Events. They allow the formalization of parts of building use process in terms of Actors involved, Activities performed and Space where these events takes place. This modeling framework is functional to simulation environment, where scripted building use process is effectively computed and simulated
