his paper reports on an empirical test aimed at verifying rationality of stated preferences in choice experiments. The test has been conducted by overlapping two applications of choice experiments. The former has been set up accord- ing standard practice. The latter has been set up and im- plemented by including choice tasks with decoy alterna- tives. The design of the test allowed to identify in the sam- ple a signifcant proportion of respondents with anomalies in their stated preferences, to classify these anomalies, to search for their possible causes, and to assess their effects on willingness to pay estimates
Prognostic value of cyclin D1, p27 and Ki-67 in mammary tumours in the dog: an immunohistochemical approach
Un’applicazione degli esperimenti di scelta a supporto della pianificazione forestale in Sicilia
This paper reports on main results of a choice experiments carried out to estimate several hypothetical afforestation and forest protection programmes in Sicily. The economet- ric analysis of data relies on logit models. The best econo- metric performance is shown by models which take into account heterogeneity in individual preferences. Results reveal that individual preferences can be grouped in dis- crete latent classes

Using attitudinal data to identify latent classes that vary in their preference for landscape preservation
The likelihood of significant heterogeneity in preferences for landscape preservation should be accounted for when designing WTP questions, estimating WTP, and formulating
resulting policy recommendations. Herein, heterogeneity in preferences for landscape preservation is investigated in the context of a latent-class model under the assumption of
the existence of some finite number of preference classes/groups. The number of classes is estimated, so few restrictions are placed on the form of the heterogeneity. One estimates the probability that individual i belongs to class c where these probabilities are a function of observable characteristics of the individual (covariates); this is much more flexible than assuming, for example, that all farmers have the same preferences. This paper aims to identify preference classes for landscape preservation in the Ibleo, a rural and beautiful part of Sicily. Estimation of classes is performed using only attitudinal data consisting of answers
to Likert-scale questions about the importance of preservation and why the respondent thinks preservation is, or is not, important. Summarizing the results, estimation indicates four distinct preference classes. The classes vary in the level of importance attached to preservation and the motivation for preservation (e.g. use vs. non-use motivations), and include one group that has little interest in preservation
Modeling the Demand for Sicilian Regional Parks. A Compound Poisson Approach
This analysis examines the demand for a system of regional parks in Sicily (Italy). The analysis utilizes conventional count data methods that do not account for correla- tion across parks as well as a new model that allows for cross-site correlation and dispersion. In this model, the degree of dispersion and cross-site correlation is shown to evolve as indi- vidual grow older. Older individuals exhibit less dispersion and/or cross-site correlation
Do risk perception and safety of sites influence rock climbing destination choices?
The risk of incurring an injury may affect climbers' destination choices for rock climbing, depending on their perceptions about the associated risk and the likely gravity of injuries, and the extent to which they regard the level of protection as a key feature in determining the climbing site's attractiveness. In this study, we conducted a discrete choice experiment and employed a hybrid discrete choice econometric model to investigate whether climbers correctly perceive climbing risks; whether the perceived probability of incurring a slight, severe, or fatal injury affects their choice of climbing site; and whether their preferences for a destination and their risk perceptions are heterogeneous. Further, we estimated monetary preferences for marginal changes in the protection level and when subjective risks equal objective risks. The results indicate a difference between perceived and actual risks in cases of slight or severe injury and a negative relationship between willingness to climb and perceived risk, such that individuals prefer to avoid climbing when perceived risks are high and are willing to pay a reasonable amount for marginal increases in the level of protection of sites. Further, their preferences for site safety are heterogeneous. Management implications: This study highlights critical aspects that need to be considered by natural site managers to prevent accidents and ensure the safety management of outdoor climbing recreation. The main findings are as follows: • Actual and perceived risks in rock climbing generally diverge, but with a modality that depends on the type of injury anticipated (i.e., slight, severe, or fatal). On average, climbers underestimate the risk of incurring slight injuries and overestimate the risk of incurring severe injuries. • The choice of site at which to climb depends on risk perception, and this relationship (on average) is negative. Further, attitudes to risk decrease with increased stated risks of being slightly, severely, or fatally injured. • Across climbers, preferences and risk perception are heterogeneous. Heterogeneity depends on the gender, age, and experience of the climbers. • Climbers are willing to take risks. However, they also are willing to pay to reduce risk
