A letter from Beverly Toyama and Hideki Obayashi to Miyoshi-san, informing him of the Kurata Ranch Reunion, which will take place in Gardena, California. The letter provides instructions regarding the time and location of the event, as well as suggested items for attendees to bring with them. It also includes a copy of a hand drawn map of Kurata Ranch, which is based on the recollection of Ume Murata. The James H. Osborne Nisei Collection contains mainly correspondence between Emiko and Usami Terada, incarcerees in the Rohwer incarceration camp, McGehee Arkansas, and the Thomas family in Lawndale, California, and photographs of the Teradas and the Thomases. The letters describe the trip from the Santa Anita Temporary Assembly Center to the Rohwer incarceration camp, their lives and conditions in the camp, and their concerns about their properties in Lawndale, California. Also included are photographs taken in the camp, some issues of "The Rohwer outpost," and fliers published during wartime

Needs and prospects for public sector accounting reform: The Japanese experience

    No full text
Why does the public sector accounting reform take so much time in Japan compared with other countries? The argument for the necessity for reform was made long ago, yet why have the desired results not been seen until now? The aim of this paper is to answer these questions and to find out key to possible effective reform. Based on the survey carried out in 2013 with 786 local authorities nationwide, the author tests the following two hypotheses and reports the empirical evidence to support them; H1: there are more examples of financial documents being utilized among local authorities that adopt double-entry bookkeeping compared to those that do not, and H2: the response toward financial documents differs depending on the size of the local authority. These empirical results suggest that in the provision of public sector accounting information of clear utility, the issue of adopting double-entry bookkeeping cannot be avoided, while considering the differences in practical burdens on local administrations, this must be looked at in tandem with a rule that differentiates between different sizes of administration

Mass Transfer with Simultaneous Chemical Reaction in Drops for Liquid-Liquid Systems

Title: Mass Transfer with Simultaneous Chemical Reactions in Drops fir Liquid-Liquid Systems, Author: Hideki Watada, Location: ThodeThis dissertation is divided into three major self-contained sections. The first one contains a review of previous work in the field of mass transfer in drops for liquid-liquid systems. The second section outlines the numerical solutions of the continuity equation for for forced convection with simultaneous chemical reaction in the dispersed phase. The solutions are compared with those predicted by existing theoretical models for mass transfer in the dispersed phase. The third section describes the experimental equipment and method of operation. Physical mass transfer in drops is studied initially. This established a basis for evaluation the effect of chemical reaction on the rate of mass transfer in a later study. The results from these experimental studies are used to test the ability of existing models to predict mass transfer with simultaneous chemical reaction in drops.ThesisDoctor of Philosophy (PhD

Photoinduced anisotropic response of azobenzene chromophore functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes

This article may be downloaded for personal use only. Any other use requires prior permission of the author and AIP Publishing. This article appeared in Yiyu Feng, Wei Feng, Hideki Noda, Akihiko Fujii, Masanori Ozaki, Katsumi Yoshino, Journal of Applied Physics 102, 053102 (2007) and may be found at https://doi.org/10.1063/1.2776220Azobenzene chromophore covalently functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes(AZO-MWCNT) were synthesized and their optical properties were investigated by ultraviolet-visible absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The polarized absorption of the AZO-MWCNT film was measured by cross-polarized light along the directions parallel and perpendicular to the incident light under the irradiation of polarized ultraviolet light. Photoinduced optical anisotropy of the AZO-MWCNT film was dominated by the enhanced dipole transition of the nanotube axis parallel to the incident light and the decreased transition perpendicular to light. The unique anisotropy induced by the photo-orientation of azobenzene chromophore provides insight into the polarized optical properties of carbon nanotubes

Clinical Psychiatric Study of Psychogenic Pain

In the present study, the author examined clinical psychiatric characteristics in 26 patients who were diagnosed as having Pain Disorder, according to the 4th edition of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV). The subjects were 7 males and 19 females. At the onset of pain, the mean age of the patients was 38.8 years. The most common site of pain was the head, followed by the back, arm, and shoulders. In 18 of the 26 patients, there was no evidence of pathological history at the sites where pain was experienced. The accompanying symptoms were insomnia, anxiety, decrease in appetite, analgesic dependence, depressed mood, and astasia-abasia. The author found that various defense mechanisms were acting in their psychological background and that their whole personality was involved in the occurrence of agony. A physician is required to use pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, or situational therapy depending upon patients' conditions and defense mechanisms

The contribution reports about rese arch projects and recent developments in Germany. The development of traffic demand and the organization of transport research are described briefly. Recent research findings with regard to the German Highway Capacity Manual (HBS) are listed and summarized comprehensively. The German Guidelines for Traffic Signals (RiLSA) and their English-language version are introduced, and current review activities are reported. Another chapter is a call of the author to establish a comprehensive quality management system for our road infrastructure and operation. For the case of Germany, the state of development in this field is shown, and needs for further research, development, and implementation are identified. Furthermore, a German guideline on the development of strategies for dynamic traffic management is presented, and research findings according the integration of various traffic control and information systems are summarized. Finally, several further developments in the area of highway capacity and traffic control are highlighted

    PREDICTION OF DEBRIS FLOW DISCHARGE

    No full text
Prediction of maximum discharge of a debris flow is as essential for the design of hard counter-measures as for the planning of soft countermeasures. Although the senior author has presenteda formula predicting the discharge of a debris flow generated from rather uniform sediment bed, the one which predicts the discharge due to failure of a natural dam has not been available yet. This paper presents two discharge predicting forumlae, the one is applicable to the case inwhich overspilled water flow scours the dam-body, and the other is applicable to the case in whichthe collapse of the dam-body occurs by the effect of seepage flow. A method to classify the twocases is also proposed. The discharge of a debris flow which occurred in the basin of the Kizuriver is well explained by the latter discharge predicting formula. This formula would be alsoapplicable to a debris flow which originates from a moving earth block accelerated by a landslide.Prediction of maximum discharge of a debris flow is as essential for the design of hard counter-measures as for the planning of soft countermeasures.
