The Austrian literature of recent years is characterized by a persistent reflection on the Nazi past, and clearly shows the need to understand and overcome the painful past of the Thirties and Forties - which only with great difficulties can be found expressed in other ways. Recent Austrian literature has tried to present the historical past in a critical, sarcastic and sometimes metaphorical way, as the works of two of the major novels of Robert Menasse and Joseph Haslinger clearly show. In this essay, the author analyzes the theme of the journey, a necessary or random chance to think about identity and the present problems of fictional characters, which represent, at the same time, the problems deriving from the painful history of the Austrian nation
Parigi 1935.
The First International Writers’ Congress for the Defense of Culture (Paris, 1935) has been an international historic and cultural event regarding the incidence of writer and literature in the fight against the advance of the Fascist and Nazi regimes. In the attempt to outline the potential of literary works in terms of a renewed relationship with the audience, writers from all over the world
gathered at the Palais de la Mutualité, and sought to define themselves and their art in view of the serious problems of their time. In this work the author analyzes, for the first time, the literary debate at the Congress, from reflection on the impact of writing in defense of culture and civilization faced with the advance of totalitarian regimes, to the definition of the role of the artist at that time, from theoretical discussions about new literary production, to concrete proposals in order to achieve these aims. In this paper, the Parisian talks are also critically located in comparison to the theoretical and literary debates gained in those years by scholars who, sometimes for unclear reasons, did not participate at this event
Meditazione e metamorfosi. Sul significato delle finestre cieche
In literature, blind doors and windows often symbolize a form of denial of any possibility of "escape" and "salvation" from oppressive inwardness or, on the other hand, are a sort of protection from the dangers that come from a threatening and intruding world. This work, the product of participation at the European School of Comparative Studies (Pontignano, 2004), is an analysis of this literary theme and of its changing and sometimes conflicting values in works by Klaus Mann (Vergittertes Fenster, 1937), Heimito von Doderer (Die erleuchteten Fenster, 1951) and Peter Handke (Die Wiederholung). In this essay, the author reflects on the meaning of the architectural element as a symbol of a specific psychological or existential condition of human beings, as well as a metaphor for existence, and sometimes of the literary work itself. Blind windows represent a sort of evolution of the same item in the literary tradition and present resources, not completely analyzed even in the the rich works of Dostoevsky, Kafka, Moravia, Pavese
Ein Schluck Erde. (Gemeinschafts-) Utopie und Dystopie im Werk von Heinrich Böll
Valentina Serra, Ein Schluck Erde. (Gemeinschafts-) Utopie und Dystopie im Werk von Heinrich Böll
An extensive secondary literature on the literary work of Heinrich Böll has rightly emphasized the weight and role of this engaged writer in the period stretching from the Second World War to the 1980s. Böll’s work has traditionally been examined in the light of his realistic writing style and the critical representation of the present, which made him famous as the “critical conscience” and militant author of the Federal Republic of Germany. In the last decades, literary criticism with relatively few exceptions (Badewien and Schmidt-Bergmann 2014, Schubert 2017) has paid little attention to the author even though his utopian and especially dystopian discourse certainly warrants further analysis. Over the years, Boll’s critical discourse of society developed along utopian and dystopian lines in much of his work, in his short stories, in his more mature prose works and even in his plays. Utopia and dystopia (Bernhard 1970, Tomko 2014) act as an optical instrument in the literary work, as a magnifying and distorting mirror of reality that transcends the limits of the engaged writer’s “prophetic” role and critically presents the origins of social contradictions and evils. Böll’s typical heroes are endowed with the characteristics of dystopian characters, since they are problematic outsiders in society who exercise a disobedient resistance against upper instances and demiurgical figures. The aim of this contribution is to pursue the utopian and, above all, dystopian Leitmotiv in Heinrich Böll’s first play Ein Schluck Erde (1962), in order to discuss the effect of his works in the new millennium. In fact, his reversed and distorted images offer an opposing utopian view of human pietas, as a means in the struggle against capitalist greed, technological ambition and warlike hybris.

L’isola dimenticata. La Sardegna nell’opera di Alfred Steinitzer, Max Niehaus e Thomas Münster
The works of German-speaking authors on their trip to Sardinia are an important resource for cultural studies, in which the concept of ‘otherness’ plays an important role in the creation of myths, stereotypes and prejudices on the island and its people. The analysis of ‘otherness’ is here drawn on important but almost forgotten works by Alfred Steinitzer, Max Niehaus, Thomas Münster, most of them never translated into Italian. Reports, travel journals and a novel are analyzed in terms of culture-contact, ‘hegemonic’ and ‘minor’ cultures, colonization, civilization, progress and modernity.
