    BRUNO VIOLI Contributo europeo e architettura moderna in Colombia

    L’affermazione dell’architettura moderna in Colombia, intorno agli anni Trenta, contò sull’apporto di architetti e ingegneri europei arrivati nel paese in diverse circostanze che, insieme a professionisti colombiani formatisi all’estero, guidarono il cambio di direzione in architettura e in urbanistica. Partendo dalla ricostruzione del quadro di riferimento, il volume si propone di approfondire la relazione tra contributo europeo e contesto colombiano, analizzando la figura e l’opera dell’architetto italiano Bruno Violi (Milano, 1909-Bogotá, 1971). Quattro edifici realizzati a Bogotá tra il 1950 e il 1960 sono presentati come casi di studio, per chiarire la forma trasversale attraverso la quale Violi si fece interprete di tale scambio dialettico, coniugando il bagaglio di esperienze che costruì in Europa con alcuni temi chiave del dibattito architettonico colombiano, come l’importanza della tecnica e l’interpretazione dell’ambiente geografico e culturale.The affirmation of modern architecture in Colombia, around the 1930s, counted on the contribution of European architects and engineers who arrived in the country in different circumstances who, together with Colombian professionals trained abroad, led the change of direction in architecture and in urban planning. Starting from the reconstruction of the reference framework, the book aims to deepen the relationship between the European contribution and the Colombian context, analyzing the figure and work of the Italian architect Bruno Violi (Milan, 1909 - Bogotá, 1971). Four buildings built in Bogotá between 1950 and 1960 are presented as case studies, to clarify the transversal form through which Violi interpreted this dialectical exchange, combining his European experiences with some key themes of the Colombian architectural debate, such as the importance of technology and the interpretation of the geographical and cultural environment

    When the geographical elements intervene in defining the identity of a territory, they end up to directly influence the character of the built environment and if this issue is related to domestic architecture, such conditions, besides being converted into primary project tools, are intimately tied to the experience of inhabiting. The house-studio that Bruno Violi (Milan, 1909 - Bogotá, 1971) realizes for himself in Bogotá in 1953 is an example to understand this dialectical compromise between domestic architecture and context. The architect chose a land on a steep slope, surrounded by an exuberant vegetation on the eastern hills of the city, where to experiment the union between geometric order and nature, integrating the life of the house with the site's topography, in a continuous dialogue between interior and exterior space, constructed artefact and natural environment, near and far landscape.Cuando los elementos geográficos intervienen en la definición de la identidad de un territorio, terminan influyendo directamente en el carácter de lo construido y si el asunto se retrae a la arquitectura doméstica, tales condiciones, además de convertirse en herramientas primarias de proyecto, están íntimamente vinculadas a la experiencia misma de habitar.     The various and complex dynamics that characterise urban regeneration processes in the contemporary city call for the experimentation of alternative models, tools and methods for the urban project. The co-design workshop linked with an action-research approach describes an effective working tool capable to reactivate and transform the spaces of the city, unfolding and revealing unexpressed potential, experimenting with unconventional uses and directly involving communities that live and recognize themselves in a specific urban context. Beyond the physical transformation of space, co-planning, co-production, self-construction and co-management are key moments that contribute to the the making of these places and of the community that can take care of it. The actions implemented by the ROCK project on Piazza Scaravilli, a public space in the core of the university area of Bologna (Italy), introduced here as a case study, represent a significant experience to clarify this methodological approach. Between 2017 and 2019, three opportunities for discussion, design and self-construction saw the involvement of students from different Departments of the University of Bologna, architectural offices, local companies, cultural entities, associations, citizens and stakeholders. The result was the transformation a square from a private parking area to a permanent urban garden, reactivating its natural vocation as a community space and demonstrating the value of the co-design workshop as a useful and effective desing tool

    The architectural itinerary represents a way of narrating the historical, documentary and patrimonial value of the buildings that build the city. A tour of the most consolidated section of Bogotá's Carrera Séptima (the oldest road in the Colombian capital), between Calle 11 and Calle 26, presents some of its most significant buildings and aims to be a tool to reconstruct and analyze the transformations that took place in the city since its foundation in 1538, by the Spanish conquistadors. The analysis of the buildings leads to different themes and events that occurred in this process, often related and intertwined with each other, such as the permanence of the colonial heritage; the change of roads nomenclature; the major projects and urban plans; historical, political and cultural memory; the traditional commercial vocation of what used to be called "Calle Real del Comercio"; the replacement of whole urban fabric blocks for the construction of the modern city; the transformation of the profile facades; the architectural repertoire, ancient and modern; the role of religious complexes for the social life of the community; the types of buildings according to the program of use, the relationship with the public space of the street, the scale and the urban structure of the city. Aspects that allow us to reconstruct the history of this important road axis, still incomplete and fragmented, reaffirming its heritage value and generating some reflections on the current condition of this part of the city

    Book abstract (Source: https://www.poligrafo.it/mies-van-der-rohe-architecture-city) Much has been written about the work and thought of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, but perhaps less attention has been paid to one of the most important aspects of his way of thinking and designing, namely the relationship between architecture and the city. The volume Mies Van Der Rohe. The Architecture of the City Theory and Architecture aims to fill this gap, gathering the contributions of many international scholars and researchers who, fifty years after the death of the master from Aachen (1886-1969), have tried to confront his extraordinary capacity to think and build the places of the contemporary city. In fact, Mies’ projects can all be read and interpreted as a meditated and clear reflection on the relationships to be established with urban features, with the specific conditions of the context, and with the elements of nature, always considered as a significant part of the project. In relation to the diversity of scales with which Mies confronts the city – from the compact structure typical of the historic European city to the open structure of the American experience – his projects can be understood both as architectures capable of weaving close relationships with the consolidated context, and as prefigurations of a different idea of the city realised in the American experience in close collaboration with Ludwig Hilberseimer. Starting from the central architectural and urban theoretical themes, the book articulates the contributions through various topics (the idea of the city, construction, teaching, public buildings, the house, representation) from which emerges the complexity and richness of a design-thinking that finds in the historical experience and in the adherence to reality its extraordinary actuality

    Mostra e workshop partecipativo organizzato nell'ambito del festival IT.A.CA, FESTIVAL DEL TURISMO RESPONSABILE, Pavia e Oltrepò pavese, 9-14 e 18-20/10/2019 Aula Forlanini, Università di Pavia, piazza Leonardo da Vinci. L’evento affronta il tema dei beni comuni urbani, oggi al centro del dibattito sull’utilizzo equo e sostenibile del territorio e delle sue risorse. Città, piazze, paesaggi, edifici e risorse sottoutilizzate sono da sempre campo di sperimentazione di discipline quali l’architettura e la pianificazione. Ma quali sono oggi i beni comuni in città? In che modo ricercatori e progettisti possono contribuire a gestirli, co-produrli e co-progettarli? Quale è il ruolo delle comunità e dei gruppi locali in relazione ad altri attori quali visitatori occasionali e turisti? La Città dei Beni Comuni presenta azioni di riattivazione dello spazio urbano messe in atto da comunità e gruppi locali come forme di restanza rispetto alle pratiche speculative di trasformazione del territorio.     A critical cartography to acknowledge spaces for (potential) Commons and Commoning Practices. An experimental academic study for the city of Pavia (Italy)

    This paper draws on the development of a critical mapping methodology capable to acknowledge spaces for (potential) commons and commoning practices in the contemporary city. Mapping the commons in cities has been investigated by very few projects so far. Some projects provided maps which did not exist before, with under-used spaces in town (public and private as well): experiences with respect to which ‘Mapping the urban voids’ (2012) or ‘Ex vuoto Pavia’ (2016) can be considered interesting samples. In some cases these are also coupled with GIS referenced maps to better match available information such as past uses, and other relevant planning information. Most interestingly, few projects provided critical cartographies in which information on local groups and communities, activities and other informal evidence were collated. (De Soto, 2015). However, mapping urban voids or vacant places does not provide as such a map on commons or coming actions. Urban commons - considered as essentially composed by three sets or layers of elements such as commons pool resources, social groups and/or local communities, set of rules or governance – are to be interpreted (and mapped) not as a fix or invariable status, rather a dynamic condition which is evolving over time. Some authors, indeed, couple the name commons with the verb, commoning, to more clearly describe its being an action. In such circumstances, the aim of mapping places of current commons, or places suitable for commoning actions, calls for an new approach to the matter. The paper proposes a methodology, which include secondary data collection and primary data through fieldwork, at different scales of action (both architectural and urban). This is based on various methods and tactics including psycho-geographical tours, both non-interactive and interactive forms of observations, critical mapping of several features. The methodology has been preliminary tested on the University central buildings in Pavia, and consequently applied to the whole town. The mapping led to the identification of case studies, followed by a more in depth analysis, which aims at revealing spatial features in connection to uses and forms of appropriation. The process of critical mapping, together with the outcomes of on-site surveys and fieldwork, aims at showcasing both what is already taking place and potential or possibilities for future uses. The methodology - still in an experimental phase and tested only in academic field so far - can be considered a possible model for mapping and acknowledge space for potential commons, through the identification of a network of relationships, both tangible and intangible. Moreover, the consequent findings can provide a useful support for public administrations in driving participatory and community based projects on the basis of a more accurate match between special features and socio-economic drivers. A critical and dynamic mapping of several different layers – including uses, community and spaces - can become a tool for the development of bottom-up, economically viable and environmentally sustainable urban actions which focused on the reuse of places, their intrinsic relationship with local groups and stakeholders which can proactively contribute to the ‘making’ of these places in the form of co-production

    La selezione di cinque architetture edificate nella città di Cesena e un progetto non realizzato per il Comune di Mercato Saraceno rappresentano, nel contesto della presente pubblicazione, una sintesi dell’opera di Ilario Fioravanti. La riproduzione di disegni, lucidi e schizzi tratti dal suo archivio evidenziano le diverse fasi del progetto illustrando un naturale processo del ‘fare architettura’ che va dall’ideazione al dettaglio. Le schede presentate e la breve relazione che accompagna i disegni intendono delineare il metodo di lavoro dell’architetto cesenate attraverso progetti a scale differenti: il quartiere (progetto Vigne “INA-Casa”, Cesena, 1957-1963); il lotto urbano e la sua trasformazione (Casa studio in via Uberti, Cesena, 1958-1960); l’isolato urbano (Palazzo Almerici, Cesena, 1956-1965); la palazzina residenziale (Edificio per quattro appartamenti in via Madonna delle Rose, Cesena, 1961-1962); il grande edificio collettivo (Monastero dello Spirito Santo, Cesena 1982-2007); lo spazio pubblico (progetto per un Mercato coperto, opera non realizzata, Mercato Saraceno 1962-1966). Testimoni della varietà, della complessità e della vastità di un’esperienza professionale ricca e articolata, i progetti illustrano le differenti fasi di una ricerca incentrata sui caratteri dell’architettura che evolve nel corso degli anni confermando un chiaro interesse per la natura dei luoghi incontrati. Nella sezione relativa alle opere d’arte è stata realizzata una scheda per ciascuna opera analizzata, eccetto che per alcuni schizzi a sanguigna e/o a matita conservati nel palazzo del Comune di Cesena e nel palazzo del Comune di Savignano e per i medaglioni, conservati nella Pinacoteca di Cesena, per i quali si è realizzata una scheda cumulativa. Le opere analizzate sono: schizzi a sanguigna e a matita, statue fittili, statue/teste in bronzo e medaglioni.

    Learning from Collaborative Processes to Design the Urban Green Transition

    Collaborative city-making and planning have been at the forefront of urban praxis and research for decades now. More recently, the pandemic crisis has emphasized how cities could benefit from proximity-driven policies for regenerating neighborhoods and triggering social innovation initiatives. The historically layered cities, collectivist culture and grassroots political vitality of the Mediterranean context are fruitful grounds for the development and experimentation of such practices. The major European political strategies and programs, such as the European Green Deal, the New European Bauhaus and the “100 Climate Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030” mission, identify citizens’ engagement as a crucial factor to foster an effective green transition. Innovative approaches, practices and policies are needed for such a process to be consistent with the vision of energy as a social need and a democratic requirement: inclusive and affordable measures can build on already tested participatory and transversal experiences of collaboration in urban governance. This paper addresses the topic of innovative co-planning and co-design processes by analyzing practices and tools from three case studies/initiatives implemented in Bologna (Italy), both to more consolidated application realms – urban greening, cultural heritage, public spaces, and to emerging energy/green transition domains. Such an inquiry will benefit from the research experiences of the interactive platform “Urban Innovation Lab – Bologna another way”, and two H2020 projects, ROCK – Regeneration and Optimization of Cultural Heritage in Creative and Knowledge Cities (GA730280), including co-designed and co-constructed actions, and the ongoing GRETA-GReen Energy Transition Actions (GA101022317), involving energy citizenship pathways. The aim is to recognize and analyze implemented tools and replicable strategies, to question and open up to the potential transferability of the lessons learned on collaborative processes to effectively address climate challenges in the Mediterranean context
