After William H. Russell, the Irish reporter for The Times of London and Ferdinando Petruccelli della Gattina, the forerunner of American reportage and correspondent for La Presse – defined by Indro Montanelli as “the most brilliant Italian journalist of the nineteenth century”– the twentieth century saw protagonists Luigi Barzini and Arnaldo Fraccaroli, both war correspondents for Corriere della Sera. These two correspondents are in the focus of this study that seeks to trace the career path, the style and the descriptive accuracy of the most important Italian reporters on that terrible occasion. Barzini, who had already witnessed some conflicts from 1899 for the newspaper from Solferino street – and continued to describe the wars until 1921 – had a great capacity for work that allowed him to write his articles at night after a day spent at the front. Reports, rich in detail and wrapped in an aura of unmatched descriptions, were written by an exceptional journalist, whose value was

The last decade has seen a relentless succession of economic crises, political and social factors that have distorted, in some cases, well-established diplomatic relations and development prospects, for better or for worse. These changes have had their greatest impact in the former socialist bloc, and particularly in the Balkans. Bulgaria, according to many studies, is part of this context and is equally conditioned by these considerations. The country, in fact, has gone through in recent years a strong political and social crisis which, with many difficulties, has led to a total economic revolution and a substantial progress in the integration into euro – Atlantic structures. The last decade has seen a relentless succession of economic crises, political and social factors that have distorted, in some cases, well-established diplomatic relations and development prospects, for better or for worse.

This volume is the result of an international conference held at Sapienza University in Rome on June 20 and 21, 2013, as the final stage of the PRIN (Progetto di rilevante interesse nazionale) project “Empires and Nations from the 18th to the 20th century”, during which scholars from all over the world—academics, specialists, young researchers, PhD students and post-doctorates—confronted diverse, but connected, topics on the relations between multinational empires and the idea of the nation. In this way, the reality of the historical empires and national states was represented, and concepts such as identity, nationality, and sovereignty analyzed. The first part of this work is dedicated to the analysis of the origins of nation-states in the context of the multinational Habsburg, Ottoman and Tsarist empires, while the second pays particular attention to the issue of national minorities, which followed the dissolution of the great empires. The third part is related to national identity and focuses on art and culture by presenting artists, painters, writers and intellectuals who had played key roles in the formation of their national identities. Such pioneers include Hungarians, Romanians, Serbs, Georgians, Chinese, and Brazilians. Specific sections are dedicated to theoretical approaches and concepts such as imperialism, geopolitics, nationality, and regionalism, and to the analysis of religious and gender issues

During World War hospitals in the rear and not only filled with nurses committed to providing assistance and relief to wounded soldiers and veterans from the terrible periods spent in the trenches. According to some calculations, in 1917 the volunteers of the Red Cross were about 10 thousand to which we must add many belonging to other associations. During the First World War more than 7,000 volunteer nurses were present in 204 field hospitals of the Red Cross, managing a total of 30,000 beds. Despite early difficulties in being included in a field, the military, predominantly male, the volunteer nurses in the thirties were in Ethiopia, Somalia, Abyssinia, Libya and Eritrea, as well as in during the Spanish Civil War. Later it was crucial the role of aid in all the theatres of World War II, especially on hospital ships (among which we can mention the steamer Tuscany and Aquileia). Eighteen Red Cross fell by armed conflict, including two in a concentration camp and two shots from the Wehrmacht
